I had asked about this before in relation to the small mining corps forming together and putting out billions of isk in bounty hunter rewards for hunting you guys down. Dont the small merc corps that take those contracts now make Jihadswarms impossible?
Not really. Just makes the jihadists stay a little more alert. I mean, they intend to lose their ships anyways, so occasionally running into a wartarget isn't going to dissuade any of them.
If I plan to play an MMO about 30 minutes per day, is EVE a good one? Is it more "burst gaming" friendly than say... WoW?
Yes.
Skills continue to train to completion in real-time - whether you're logged in or not. The only thing that requires time input is making ISK. I play EVE maybe 5 - 10 hours a week and I never feel like I'm falling behind.

I just got something in my inbox about adding 14 free days to my account if I go back... I wonder if I should give it another shot.
question: last time I stopped, I think I left a skill with a long training time to train in case I came back. Do such skills increase while you're not subscribed? or only while you're subscribed and offline? I'm guessing they don't increase unless you're subscribed, considering some skills take actual months to train, so you could unsub for a couple months and then come back and have that skill...

Whelp, I downloaded the trial and tried to log into it. Same old same old, loading bar stalls and sits for 10 minutes then it crashes out, bitching about 'vivoxsdk.dll'. I'll fiddle with it a bit after work, but if I can't get it to do any better no eve for me
So I've tried EVE time and time and time again, and each time I log in for a few days, then get bored and leave. I can't seem to find any sort of profession of niche that I enjoy enough to make me want to log back in again. I am - for the fifth time or so - considering getting another free trial.
I really want to like this game, but it has yet to happen to a sufficient level. Can anyone suggest something for me to try during this next, inevitable trial to make me have fun in EVE?

Finding a good group of mates to work with makes the most boring of task enjoyable, regardless of what it is. Eve at heart is just a giant chat room, never mind you get a space-ships to fly around with and shoot people (or roids!), that's just an extra coat of paint. It's one of the many reasons why the game can be so political at times, because the game doesn't hold your hand and force you down a linear path of grinding (like WoW). From the moment you start, you’re free to take the reins of your character and forge a path of your choosing to do whatever you want and accomplish it in any manner of your choosing. Usually it’s only later that you discover that there are numerous amounts of people that share your goals and ideals, coming together to form corps. to achieve any quest they perceive as a group. Without the advanced social network that holds Eve together, Eve would be a bland and boring series of tasks that nobody in their right mind would wish to achieve.
But because Eve is full of people to talk, trade to, pay tribute to, to pirate from, interact with, and send lasers/bullets to. It's a better place, where your actions, and the action of those you choose to side with, really do have a major effect on things (and people) around you.
Don't try to play this game by yourself. Try to play it with others.

Da' Point: Find a group that suits you!
Yeah seriously, I was about to quit right before I realised there was a pa group to play with. Never left (well I did for a while to pirate, but I came back)
Active as in having our own area of space with towers which we fuel, a constant production setup at our main station, along with corp-funded cruisers for people to go lose for free, with a lot of participation on nearly every single goon op/campaign, and people online from server startup to downtime?
With our own separate forums, volunteers to orient newbies?
I'd say we're a little active. Do we have a wiki page yet?
Merchi is a plenty active and I've been loving it down in epr0 so far. Lost two ship one to rats and one to a missclick (it's embarrassing).
The biggest problem for me is trying to get some mining done at offpeak. Being aussie, when I'm on, epr0 has no more then 3-4 around at most.
Still, the ore must flow.
Hey, I've been out of EVE for over a year, but I've been thinking about getting back in. When I stopped playing (due to long term unemployment) I had just gotten into ice mining with my barge and recently purchased a Hyperion only to have it destroyed. Are we still down in the southern region with GS and RA? Did we ever get a real base set up down there? We were still hanging out in GS (formerly BOB) stations when I left.
My character name was Saul Aberline if anyone remembers me.

I just reactivated my account. I'll be on as soon as the new client finishes downloading/installing.
Stay away from 0.0, it sucks the fun out of the game.
After a couple years fighting in the south I hope I never go back to 0.0, hopefully my corp decides to push for FW/Piracy as both sound much more entertaining. Plus being able to pvp when you want is always nice.

Yeah this guy is totally right, on opposite day. On every other day though, the correct advice is get out of empire as fast as you can.

I bring with me the age old story of a first time poster, long time lurker, so 'hi all.'
So me and the missus downloaded the trial, skilled up a few skills(learnings mostly, those seem to give you time to figure stuff out) and are on the verge of being able to do lvl 4 missions without having to warp out all the time.
But, the sole reason I wanted to try EvE out was the pvp. Where can we find it? On one hand it seems there is none to be had in highsec, on the other we hear all this stuff about entering lowsec basically meaning you're either ignorant or have a deathwish unless you're part of an alliance. Where and how should we start?

Factional Warfare is what you want. It's like PvP-lite, meant to get you into PvP at an easy, slow pace. You should find a Militia Recruiting office at your favorite missioning point. There are four FW factions, one for each race.

So I gather that the security status of a system also affects the difficulty of missions? I tried to do a level 2 mission in .5 space and just about lost my Caracal in 20 seconds (I warped in, got hit hard and immediately started warping out. In the time it took to warp out I lost all 4K shields and half my armor).
What's the best way to set up a proper shield tank? Are hardeners better than extenders?

No it doesn't, and yes hardeners are generally better, unless you already have well hardened shields. I'm going to venture a guess you were doing a mission vs bloods, sanshas, or eom? Know what you're fighting, refit hardeners accordingly.

kudos for having a missus that A) is a gamer, was not completely put off by space ships and laser beams, and C) actually wants to PvP. Diamond in the rough right there. I had A) for a while, but now she's lapsed away from games entirely and I'm stuck in the gamer girl-less doldrums again -_-

Old news is old. And most of smash didn't even bother fighting so, congrats? You defeated a dead alliance effectively. Not to downplay the incredible goon victory. Anyways...
I am an oldtimer so most people will probably not know me. But for those that are curious and have an SA account, I wrote a little history about the first PA corp The Merch and how Merch Industrial came to be, in the "Have you ever created something in an MMO that lived on past you?" thread. http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2728517&pagenumber=7#post345904414
I'll spoil it here.
What I wrote is extremely biased, take it with a grain of salt, certain people here will not like it, but it is my account of what happened.
In EVE Online, a few friends from the Penny-Arcade forums and I started The Merch [MRCH-] corporation which became the official PA corp at the time. We were trying to become an industrial corp, so we had corp mining operations and sold the profit for the corp wallet with payout for those involved. After awhile, some people in the corp wanted to make a profit off of corp members by manufacturing and selling stuff, but we wanted corp stuff to be at cost. This somehow enraged them and they went on some capitalistic superiority complex saying how they needed to make a profit.
They split off and made Fleshreaper Inc [FLSHR] as a sort of rival PA corporation. We were all based in the Groothese system so they only moved over one station in the same system, which made tensions high. What made it worse was that they were also recruiting people off the PA forums acting superior to us, pretty much calling us communist scum. Some highlights were us scamming them out of money (ISK) and setting up a trap to kill one of their main members using some of us that tricked them into thinking they defected from us.
There was a self-appointed police player corp called Eliminate [ELIM] that roamed the region and noticed our feuding, so they attempted to order peace between us. The only problem was that the Fleshreaper CEO convinced Eliminate that we were in the wrong so when Eliminate tried to moderate between us, they told us to get out.
So we fucked off and The Merch migrated south into Amarr space while Fleshreaper stayed near Caldari space, completely opposite sides of the universe. We kept to our industrial roots but we grew restless, so we became pirates in other regions while trying to act like the good guys to our neighbors in our home system. We were two-faced bastards and we loved it because it worked.
Eventually The Merch went on to do a lot more pirating and warfare, but recruitment of newbies became an issue, especially since Fleshreapers were still being faggots. We were too small to accommodate new players and we were too much of a liability with our pirate characters. Our solution was to create a sister corp that would focus on industry for the new comers and those who didn't want to be pirates like us. I'm also not going to lie, we thought this corp would be more like our bitch, supplying us with shit while we pirated. However, we ended up not caring and/or were too lazy to fulfill this so we let them do their own shit. This is how Merch Industrial [MRCHI] started.
Most of The Merch started to quit because of boredom and Fleshreapers as well, so Merch Industrial became the official PA corp. In the beginning, we oversaw Merch Industrial but it really wasn't for us so we left it to themselves to take the reigns. Merch Industrial is a whole story in itself and I am not apart of it, but I like to think that at least I helped a little in their creation. Now, Merch Industrial is a part of Goonswarm.
Extra for the EVE goons, I also knew deadtear when he first started. He was a faggot then and he is still a faggot now. I still remember his plans for training for a Moros. :rotate:
tl;dr EVE Online. Some friends from Penny-Arcade and I formed The Merch. Bullshit. We form the sister corp, Merch Industrial. Now Merch Industrial are being gay together with goons.
I never remember what the hell POS is supposed to stand for. planetary orbiting station or something? what were they thinking with that acronym? I do believe it's already taken.
Don't think about the posses and all that, leave it all to Graham etc. Just have fun flying around cheap shit that you don't mind losing and enjoy the wars that goonswarm continually create to amuse themselves :x
