Just ask for ships, i'm not even in a big corp and I have plenty to throw at new players wanting to try for the pirate/fleet life. I'm sure the guys in merch whom are multi-billionaires can throw you a bone or twelve.

As a minmitar pilot, I'm always slightly annoyed by the fact that the only ship we have that really gets any love is the rifter for tackling. (I trained Minmitar battleships V! WHHYYYYYY?!?)

hey duders
got back into this after having a brief love affair last year
so
I guess the career paths and such are not in the game anymore? How do you get starter skills? do you have to do the career path agent missions to get them

Minmatar still have the best overall lineup of medium ships. Minmatar Cruiser V leads to more cool shit than any other single skill.
After retelling the dismantling of BoB to my cousin, we decided to give the 21 day Steam trial a shot. What are some interesting things a noob can do in Empire space? Any special missions or activities?
I doubt we'll do anything PvPish, unless there's an easy way to go to 0.0 (and specifically the PR- bubble camp) without being blown up during the trip. I mostly just want to show him the game and how it works, how it plays, etc, we're not going to subscribe or anything, unless timecards are going cheap.
Any specific skill learning paths we should take? I think we'll just be in our frigates for the entire time.

Well if you don't want to go to 0.0 then do some missions, get used to how your ships work and how to deal with combat situations while making some isk. Then go out to low sec and cruise the planets/belts/stations looking for ratters/other pirates to attack.

To be honest I'd love to go to 0.0 and piss people off, but as a couple of triallers with no intention of subbing we have 21 days just to fuck around and try and have some fun, provoking people, possibly being held hostage by gate campers or whatever, I dunno.
Also, if your first ship gets blown up, are you completely fucked?

It's extremely easy to move from place to place if you don't have to worry about any assets(you, being new, shouldn't have anything of value anyways). Ask in corp chat how to pod jump out to delve.
The worst mistake you can make as a newby is to wait to get into the action. Don't wait for skills. Don't wait to jew first. Get to Delve get a fleshreaper ship, jump in to PvP and don't worry about dying. I guarantee you will have a shit load of fun.
.kbf: Corp chat? I'll be coming in as a new character too, so I'm assuming that unless corp chat is some public channel I'd have to join a corp first. I've really no intention of joining MerchI or whatever corp and leeching for 21 days. I'll go see if pod-jumping is public info, should be...
Anyway, I don't mind dying, I just worry that I won't be able to do jack shit once I lose my noob ship or whatever. My cousin's getting to grips with it (and coming from a lifetime of korean grindfests with colourful sparkly graphics and ridiculous attack animations, surprisingly he's finding this intruiging) and he notes that he's already got his 2nd ship while mining, so I guess it shouldn't be too hard to jump into another ship if I have the spare funds...

The corp is there for PA members. Even if it's just for 21 days, you will have a much better experience in eve with a 0.0 corp. You may even decide to play longer .

Sweet, thanks. I'll let my cousin have a bit more time to accustom himself to the cold harshness of internet spaceships (he's already moaning about the lack of cargo space...). Unlike him, I did have some Eve experience with a trial, but that was... 2006, I think.
I went to the recruitment thread linked in the OP and I trust that all the information there is outdated, specifically the station co-ordinates? What's the process to join these days?

Gallente Frigate I
Basically:
Can you mount a Web?
Can you mount a Warp scrambler?
Can you go REALLY REALLY FAST (mount a Micro Warp Drive)
Can you fly a frigate?
Are you not afraid to die as you race towards/orbit some fuckhueg ship at several kilometers a second?
If you can answer "yes" to all of these, you can tackle.
Some times the builder guys don't even bother to load ammo into the free tackling frigates. Sometimes they don't bother to mount guns.
Or, as this picture sums it up:

It was asked what happens when you lose your newb ship. The answer is that they give you another newb ship and tell you to be more careful.
Seriously, you will always be provided with another newb ship if you have nothing else.
More careful? Rushing headlong in and dying over and over again in a tackling rifter is what we need you for.
I think he means reapers and ibis' and shit. Up in Empire.
^If you die in Empire with no other options, Concord gives you a newb ship and send you a letter that tells you to be more careful. Technically they do it not in Empire too, but that's not as important.

As caldari i have a merlin set up in that fashion (web, scram,MWD) - but would I be better off going to rifters? Bought the min and am frigate skills just in case. Not sure how much difference it makes to be honest.
As a more technical note, from what I've learnt tracking/accuracy/damage is as strongly related to angle of velocity as to pure speed. Since the enemy will get at least 3-4 rounds of firing off, is there some technique to being hard to hit - i.e not approaching directly but almost in a spiral.....
Edit:
Technically your ship need not be destroyed. Any time you dock in a station in your pod without any ships in there Conchord leaves you a nice new ship and a present of tritanium. I only wish it was worth undocking, ejecting, redocking etc for the never ending free ore

This is either called transversal or angular velocity, depending on the situation or whatever, and yes, it plays an enormous role in hitting the enemy.
And when I say enormous, try to imagine the words in twenty foot high neon letters.
You generally never want to rush straight at a ship unless you're trying to uncloak someone or whatever. Even a slight angle can save you from being pegged by a battleship's cannons.
As for propaganda pictures, this is one of my favs:

So how does one go about that when the in game menu only offers a 'rush headlong' setting?
Manually double clicking to set new headings ever few seconds? Or setting progressively smaller orbit values (though I have found an annoying habit of ship pausing when I've changed orbits before).
I am sure this should seem obvious, but I seldom come up with an optimal system for doing things....

Manually double clicking in space every couple seconds, and once in orbit range switching over to the automatic orbit.
Ok, joined the good boys of MERCHI, did the intro tutorials, suicided out to C3, and now chilling there.
Aside from tackling is there not much else I can do yet? Also, when I'm not tackling, should I just go back out to high sec space and do missions there?
Also, how do I go about getting a frigate to tackle in? Corp chat said to get one from the contracts screen, but none were listed
I'm just horribly newb to this game and trying to figure out what I should be doing, want to be productive/useful to the corp and also explore and have fun.
Just looking for advice (also, please be specific, I'm still learning the lingo/interface/etc....)

I think it defaults to entire region which will not show corp or alliance specific contracts.
I just finished the first day of my 21-day trial. My friend couldn't have sent me the invite at a better time: I just picked up a 23" monitor (this game is amazing at 1900x1080), and I am (was, now) in a gaming lull.
Anyways, I'm disappointed that I haven't tried this sooner. Various discussions regarding its difficulty, complexity, learning curve, and how conducive it is to new players put me off to the idea. I'm finding that the game isn't difficult, merely complex and deep - the obvious result of years of intricate tinkering. The tutorials and man pages are far beyond what I've found in other, less complex games, and completely dispelled my concerns regarding the learning curve. The community has been great so far, it's weird being in a game with literally 3,000+ people in the equivalent of the general chat. Immersive as hell, too.

And then will be working on E-War skills like Web & such
Still not sure if I'm going to go Merch or meet up w/ some friends in SA's team.
But you guys are all friends, right?
And my recommendation, if you're more PvP interested, is Web/warpjam skills before destroyers or cruisers.
