Last night, my wife's Vaio laptop died on her. She was using it (while it was plugged in) and then it just decided to shut off. Turning it on did nothing. Removing the battery and putting it back in did nothing. I don't think it's even charging anymore. Anything else we can try before taking it somewhere to have it looked at?

Sounds like a power issue on the mobo, take it somewhere and have it looked at if that didn't work. I take it that the laptop just shut off without any warning, that is, that it was a hard shutoff. Again, sounds like a power issue.
I know my laptop has had an issue where the power is not actually connected even if the cord is plugged in. Is there a light that indicates if it is charging? if you wiggle the power cord does it come on? If so you probably have a bad connection which will probably take soldering of a bit on the motherboard. This is fairly common and most computer repair places should do it. It cost me $150 CAD but i lent my laptop to my sister and when i came back ~ 2 months later it was doing it again. Personally as a workaround i have a highlighter that i jam under the power cord so it is locked at an angle that I know connects (but this is obviously bad for the mobo).

Good call. Took it to Best Buy and this is exactly what the guy said was the problem. Fortunately it was still under warranty. Just have to play the waiting game now. Thanks for the info everyone.
