I need a new PC game to play.

I built a new PC a little while ago (Q6600, 4gb ddr800, 512mb 8800gt, etc) and it plays modern games pretty good, to my standards. So I'm looking for a good modern game to play.

I love FPS games, but seriously, I just replayed all of Half-Life 2 plus episodes, I'm halfway through BioShock, and I play TF2 so much I'm getting sick of it. So I'd like to stray away from shooters.

I love RPG games, and took a long look at Oblivion, discovered my roommate had it for PS3 and played it for a bit. I think I'd like it a lot better on PC, especially if I could download a mod to remove lock picking (fucking boring mechanic argh).

I'm not very good at RTS games, and consequently don't get much enjoyment from them.

I loved Mechwarrior II back in the day, kinda wish there was a MW V or something.

What should I buy? Doesn't necessarily have to be a long game, or an ultra-modern game. Maybe I missed something great in the last couple of years? Oblivion is a few years old but would look fantastic regardless, you know what I'm saying.

If you like RPGs, you should buy Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines off Steam. Everyone should. Its about 4 years old, so should look great on your new PC.

Also Check out Dark Messiah, a first person action game, if you like melee combat. It plays as either a hack and slash with swings that are directionally controlled, or as a stealth game. You can download a demo of it to check it out.

F.E.A.R. is short but intense. Turn the sound up and the lights down.

The most absorbing FPS I've ever played.

The (first) expansion, Extraction Point, is also good, but you're better off pretending the series ends where the original does.

Okay, just noticed the 'no shooters' part; my bad.

Try Dreamfall: The Longest Journey? Beautiful, and it has a good story.

And seconding Vampire. Multiple, multiple paths, so it's got lots of replay value.

    That statement is just wrong...

Anyway, play STALKER. It's a shooter that isn't a shooter. One of the most atmospheric games ever made. I would steer clear of Oblivion... It's shockingly bland through-and-through (with the exception of the Dark Brotherhood and the final Thieves Guild mission). Kind of an out-of-left-field suggestion next: Buy X3: Reunion on STEAM. Incredibly deep (to the point of mind-bending confusion in the first few hours), fun, and addictive. It also is one of the best looking games I've ever played.

I actually own F.E.A.R, bought it for my last PC which ran it terribly, so I shelved it. If I can't find anything else to play, I'll be playing though that next.

Fear is pretty underwhelming. Max Payne 2 does the slow-mo effect much better. Speaking of which, if you haven't played it yet, check it out, it still looks damn good.

ok...crysis, youve got a good rig, pretty much identical to mine and i can run everything high at an acceptable resolution, and thats a FPS. UT3 you might enjoy however it's very fast paced. Bioshock would be fun and mass effect is out on PC i think, so that would be another awesome choice.

Whoops, didn't realize I put it like that. I meant "that statement just seems so wrong to me," or something along those lines. But yes, look at X3! If you get into it, it's almost MMO-like in its ability to never let go. And you only pay once.

Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth

It's an FPS, but not really, and an RPG, but not really, and an adventure game, but not really.

    It is, however, awesome.

Also, Condemned: Criminal Origins. The greatest Hobo Bludgeoning Simulator ever made.

I'd suggest STALKER. It has a nice amount of RPG elements like stat modifiers and inventory management with quests and sidequests, and the atmosphere of the game is pretty amazing and downright creepy at some points. With a few essential mods like Float32 and remove headbob, you should be good.

    F.E.A.R. is more atmospheric.

Then again, I played the XB version of MP2, so maybe that's why I was underwhelmed by it. It just seemed like another third person shooter to me, except it had good art design going for it.

I thought I'd enjoy the story, but I didn't care for the cast as much as I expected.

I know you said you don't like RTS game, but I'd still check out Medieval: Total War 2. It doesn't play like a command and conquer game, and the strategy map parts are turn based.

All (or most) of the Infinity Engine games. And Morrowind. And Arx Fatalis. And.. what am I forgetting.

Oh, yes. Myth and/or Myth II. Imagine an RTS game stripped of any base building or resource management, and add in dwarves with moltovs.

And if you enjoyed MechWarrior, you may like the MechCommander and possibly Heavy Gear games.

Yes, even though you said you're not big into RTS games, let me suggest World in Conflict to you. It's a lot of fun and doesn't deal with resource management like a lot of other RTS games. I had a great time playing through the single player mode. And damn, it looks nice.

Apparently the multiplayer mode is great too, but I only played it a few times. I'd always get my ass kicked, as is usually the case with these games.

Download the demo. It's a good representation of the final game.

    - Crysis: Awesome sandbox shooter. Largely non-linear in how it allows you to tackle scenarios and situations. Most shooters are pretty linear in their approach, but here you're allowed to tackle the situations largely however you want. Even though it's a shooter it might be better than the more linear stuff you've been trying so far.

    - The Witcher: Pretty cool RPG actually. The combat's fun (based around timing, and making good use of potions and oils that you make yourself) and the story has you making actual choices that come back to affect you later on in the game, even if you don't realise they will at first. Few games bother to even try this.

    - Company of Heroes: I know, you said you don't tend to like RTS's. But Company of Heroes is without doubt the most atmospheric WWII game I've ever played. The sound design is just brilliant. The tutorial and campaign help you to ease into things, and your individual squad soldiers will intelligently head for nearby cover when they can. Rock solid game.

    - Freespace 2: Source Code Project: You said you were a fan of mech sims and similar, how about Space Combat sims? The Freespace SCP is free (as in, you pay nothing), the complete Freespace 1 & 2 games. In terms of space combat they have yet to be beaten even a decade on, they really are the best games of the genre. Play with a joystick if possible.
