I built a new PC a little while ago (Q6600, 4gb ddr800, 512mb 8800gt, etc) and it plays modern games pretty good, to my standards. So I'm looking for a good modern game to play.
I love FPS games, but seriously, I just replayed all of Half-Life 2 plus episodes, I'm halfway through BioShock, and I play TF2 so much I'm getting sick of it. So I'd like to stray away from shooters.
I love RPG games, and took a long look at Oblivion, discovered my roommate had it for PS3 and played it for a bit. I think I'd like it a lot better on PC, especially if I could download a mod to remove lock picking (fucking boring mechanic argh).
I'm not very good at RTS games, and consequently don't get much enjoyment from them.
I loved Mechwarrior II back in the day, kinda wish there was a MW V or something.
What should I buy? Doesn't necessarily have to be a long game, or an ultra-modern game. Maybe I missed something great in the last couple of years? Oblivion is a few years old but would look fantastic regardless, you know what I'm saying.

Also Check out Dark Messiah, a first person action game, if you like melee combat. It plays as either a hack and slash with swings that are directionally controlled, or as a stealth game. You can download a demo of it to check it out.
I usually play those at work
Inquisitor77: Rius, you are Sisyphus and melee Wizard is your boulder
Tube: This must be what it felt like to be an Iraqi when Saddam was killed
Bookish Stickers - Mrs. Rius' Etsy shop with bumper stickers and vinyl decals.
The most absorbing FPS I've ever played.
The (first) expansion, Extraction Point, is also good, but you're better off pretending the series ends where the original does.
Okay, just noticed the 'no shooters' part; my bad.
Try Dreamfall: The Longest Journey? Beautiful, and it has a good story.
And seconding Vampire. Multiple, multiple paths, so it's got lots of replay value.
That statement is just wrong...
Anyway, play STALKER. It's a shooter that isn't a shooter. One of the most atmospheric games ever made. I would steer clear of Oblivion... It's shockingly bland through-and-through (with the exception of the Dark Brotherhood and the final Thieves Guild mission). Kind of an out-of-left-field suggestion next: Buy X3: Reunion on STEAM. Incredibly deep (to the point of mind-bending confusion in the first few hours), fun, and addictive. It also is one of the best looking games I've ever played.
I actually own F.E.A.R, bought it for my last PC which ran it terribly, so I shelved it. If I can't find anything else to play, I'll be playing though that next.

"... to my standards" signals an opinion, not a statement, so how can it be wrong? =P
I hear good things about STALKER, and maybe I'll take a look at X3, thanks.

Whoops, didn't realize I put it like that. I meant "that statement just seems so wrong to me," or something along those lines. But yes, look at X3! If you get into it, it's almost MMO-like in its ability to never let go. And you only pay once.
It's an FPS, but not really, and an RPG, but not really, and an adventure game, but not really.
It is, however, awesome.
Also, Condemned: Criminal Origins. The greatest Hobo Bludgeoning Simulator ever made.
F.E.A.R. is more atmospheric.
Then again, I played the XB version of MP2, so maybe that's why I was underwhelmed by it. It just seemed like another third person shooter to me, except it had good art design going for it.
I thought I'd enjoy the story, but I didn't care for the cast as much as I expected.
Dawn of War
Supreme Commander
Assassin's Creed
The Witcher
Psychonauts
Sam and Max episodes
San Andreas (there's a multiplayer mod for PC, along with the other GTAs)
Oh, yes. Myth and/or Myth II. Imagine an RTS game stripped of any base building or resource management, and add in dwarves with moltovs.
And if you enjoyed MechWarrior, you may like the MechCommander and possibly Heavy Gear games.
did you even read what he said or are you just listing your favorite games
Also: Play Battlefield 2142 if you haven't yet.
Oh and Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 just came out. It's pretty cool.
Also my local store had Gears of Wars for $25.
Myth series is loads of fun if you can get past the worst control interface ever designed by man.
I read the first and last sentence, which was the actual question. But leaving out shooters and RTS, the staples of the PC, leaves me wondering why he upgraded his PC in the first place.
Apparently the multiplayer mode is great too, but I only played it a few times. I'd always get my ass kicked, as is usually the case with these games.
Download the demo. It's a good representation of the final game.
My Backloggery
Awesome game and will stress your system to the max.
I'm actually a very big fan of shooters, which is why I upgraded a while ago =P
I just wanted to see if there was something I'd missed, and there have been a few good suggestions so far.

- The Witcher: Pretty cool RPG actually. The combat's fun (based around timing, and making good use of potions and oils that you make yourself) and the story has you making actual choices that come back to affect you later on in the game, even if you don't realise they will at first. Few games bother to even try this.
- Company of Heroes: I know, you said you don't tend to like RTS's. But Company of Heroes is without doubt the most atmospheric WWII game I've ever played. The sound design is just brilliant. The tutorial and campaign help you to ease into things, and your individual squad soldiers will intelligently head for nearby cover when they can. Rock solid game.
- Freespace 2: Source Code Project: You said you were a fan of mech sims and similar, how about Space Combat sims? The Freespace SCP is free (as in, you pay nothing), the complete Freespace 1 & 2 games. In terms of space combat they have yet to be beaten even a decade on, they really are the best games of the genre. Play with a joystick if possible.
Plus all my games are awesome and have free demos
Steam page http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=game&AppId=11020. Download it. It's awesome and it's free.
Crap how did I forget about Trackmania?
The racing game for people who don't like racing games, and instead want to have fun doing crazy stunt jumps and loops and things.
