Transferring domain registration

Hey PA peoples-

My domain registration is set to expire. I want to renew it, but the registrar I'm currently using is Gandi, a French company. With the dollar in the crapper, the price is pretty high and I want to just go through someone else like Dreamhost (my webhost) or Go Daddy or whomever.

How long after it expires at Gandi do I have to wait to register the domain somewhere else? And would that require any extra fees?

You don't need to wait for it to expire, you can do a domain name transfer to the new registrar. Reregistering after it's expired is a bad idea, that's a good way to lose your domain name to someone else, especially if it's relatively short in length and/or has potential commercial value.

If it has any decent pageranking, you can expect spammers to buy it from under you within minutes of the expiration.
