Good lord, this game is starting to become more and more a chore to figure out what the hell kind of skills you're supposed to have for what bosses and what fuses with what to make a what that what is weak to what so that you don't get your ass kicked by the boss that comes out of nowhere.
How is some sort of guide not absolutely essential for playing this thing?

Trial and error. I did end up getting the guide like two-thirds of the way through, but just for the freaking dungeon maps. I don't even want to contemplate getting through the last dungeon without some sort of walkthrough.
Trick: Play around in the Cathedral of Shadows. Save your game and just screw around with fusing. Just, completely and utterly random fusing. A lot of the enemies you'll end up checking out you'll end up running into at some point, weaknesses and all. It also helps you get used to the madness of the fusion system.
When you're satisfied, make a note of anything you'd want to actually make, and reset. Make something for reals, if so inclined, but try to make a mental note (or a real note, if your brain tends to store practical information, as opposed to anal geek minutiae) of demon attributes.
For boss fights, just go in expecting to die once (at least). Sometimes, you'll manage, but your first initial concern is figuring out your approach. Basically, trial and error is your life blood.
(I truly hope you're actually referring to Nocturne here.)

Yes, Nocturne.
See, the thing is I hate trial and error in games because I tend to get really angry when I lost even once, so losing over and over again just to figure out what I might be able to do to possibly just really grates on me and makes me dislike whatever game I'm playing. Like Cave Story today, I died 3 times on a boss so I deleted the game folder. But I'm at a bit mentally unstable so whatever.
My point is that fuck White Rider. And probably the other Riders too.
I'm nearing the end of DDS' Samsara Tunnels, and I fight Asura Cerberus. I manage to squeak by with massive use of Revival Gems, an Attack Mirror, and a Dekaja Rock (because I didn't have any debuffs or buffs of any kind going into the fight, and was getting instakilled by Power Charged Rends). I barely finish the fight, and heal up. I walk back to the save point and get into a random battle, and I figure, hey, I can handle a random battle.
HA HA FUCKING HA. They get first strike. Mahama. Mahama. Shock Wave (hits Argilla). Shock Wave (wipe).

Worst part is that there's a save point right outside

I played for a while. I liked it. The only problem with it is that if you can't read any Japanese you're going to have a very hard time getting very far in it.
The Answer, Door 4, first boss trio. All the other bosses I've been able to handle with a minimum of difficulty after finding out what kind of attacks they have and assembling a party that works best against it. But this group is different.
It's the fire, the electric, and the ice bosses. I've got Junpei, Akihiko and Mitsuru with me, but even with knocking down the fire and the ice ones almost all the time (unless they dodge - which they are known to do) so that only the electric dude is up usually... the electric dude still somehow manages to wreck my shit. Tips for making this battle go quicker?
Oh, a general rule for The Answer: Even if a boss has a weakness, your AI buddies aren't going to exploit the weakness often unless you have analyzed the boss. Yes, I know, you can't see the details, but it seems to flip a magic switch in their head that tells them "Hey I can cast a spell to knock them over".
It's a bit grindy but they have Exp events now. I started playing it again yesterday but it's not very forgiving since the combat is pretty active based and everything hits like a truck. They have added a few more demons and some new tricks since last time. The fusions are still hours of fun and you can even 3-way fuse with a friend's demon. If you translate the main wiki, you can pretty much learn what you can't in game (Like Quests/Skills/Demons/events.) Theres some helpful guides on Gamefaqs now as well...
HA! Wrapped up Empress and Aeon by the skin of my fucking teeth. I never even touched Justice and only got to rank 2 in Temperance, but what do I care? They suck.
Now I've got Helel with Victory Cry, Satan and Messiah with Die For Me! and Mudo Boost, Shiva, Vishnu, Metatron and the whole other grab bag of major mythical deities. Now let's see if I can take on the final boss without being forced to use Armageddon again. It's just a tragedy I discovered too late that I could make the ultimate weapons in the Antique Store, because at this point I don't have enough time to create them.
Incidentally, I wasn't expecting quite that design for Alilat.
Just hit L13, with my Quad Elemental Lilim killing things around floor 26. Not bad, I need about 300-400 XP to level and the fights here give about 20-100 XP per while soloing.
Of course, this requires that I never, EVER take a hit or miss an attack, cause if I do, I die.
I really need to get some element-immune Personae. I have Jack Frost right now, I seem to remember King Frost (?) being good too, but don't really remember how one gets him.
Edit: Some Multi-target spells would also be super, right now I'm using basic Zio/Bufu/etc and it's extremely mana intensive.
You know, for a traditional JRPG, Nocturne is surprisingly forthcoming. From my experience, as long as you do something every now and then, you'll scrape by. Fight, fight, fight, and if you hit a wall, go fusing for new demons. And if you need to grind for experience, you'll just enter a battle, and then reinforcements will appear to keep enemies coming and experience flowing. Quite frankly, the only thing I'm missing is Earthbound Too-Hot-To-Touch system. The one where battles end automatically if your level is far and above theirs. And I have just totally invented that name.

Too-Hot-To-Touch sounds something straight out of EarthBound, and is a great name for a game mechanic.

Dungeon crawl with insights to the characters' backstories. Unfortunately, no S-link stuff.
Good lord, do I ever at least get the Compendium? It sucks fusing things and then realizing "oops, now I have to grind until something with Zio pops up!"
Ah, I'd noticed that they picked them up a lot faster, okay. That is a fair trade, game. Man though, I was really hoping for more post-game story, interesting as the character development is.
Am I just screwing up in the Journey? I barely remember the early game of P3, should I just be working on getting healing spells and resistances on my main character's personae first?
I mean, yeah, this is hard mode instead of normal, but, god daaaamn, I don't remember getting stuck on a boss until later full moon events.
What the FUCK! So if I have null death on it's void death spell except for one? What the goddamn fuck, game. That is just bullshit.
Also, RPGs where it's game over if your main character dies are pieces of shit and go fuck themselves and die and FUCK NOCTURNE STOP PISSING ME OFF AND MAKING HAVE TO REDO SEGMENTS FOR NO GOOD FUCKING REASON!!!

No, Eternal Rest. I had to look up that it instantly killed sleeping targets.
But seriously, if you have something that voids death spells, then it should void death spells, no exceptions. i just...I just can't tell you how I much I hate repeating things like this. I lost a good half hour. Fuck.

It's not Nocturne hard mode if I don't die at least a few times in the 2nd battle of entire game.

I kept trying to recruit the demon, not realizing that I could not recruit yet.
I'm rolling with the early posse right now and things are smoother.

I need to steal my copy back.

Atlus USA?
If this happens, I start my first MMO.

Don't know if it's still current or not.

It would be better in English though.
That stuff still is good I believe but I don't know if account creation has changed at all.

L36 Guardian:
Me: ZIO!
Junpei: Cleave!
Akihiko: Sonic Punch!
Boss: Magarula! *300 damage to everyone* (150 more HP than I have Max)
Me: What the.. .fuck...
Guess it's time to go find a persona with Garu resistance or something. Jesus.
I mean, yeah, this is hard mode instead of normal, but, god daaaamn, I don't remember getting stuck on a boss until later full moon events.
Just try to grab something with Str towards Garu, bring Yukari and Akihiko and leave Junpei behind.
Nasty stuff.
