Movies like Cloverfield

Movies like Cloverfield are quickly becoming my favorite genre of movie. The problem is I know of very few of them. It is not even necessarily the giant monster aspect of the movie I am attracted to but rather the "fucked up situation that average people are experiencing without any clue what is going on atleast to begin with" aspect. An example of a movie in this category which I enjoyed recently would be The Mist. Signs is also a very good example. Hell I even enjoyed War of the Worlds.
Help me H/A to discover more of these types of movies. Even foreign movies that fall in this category with subtitles available are fine. Heck, if you wish you could even direct me to books like this.
There's a really good Korean movie called "The Monster" I believe. Its actually filled in Seoul and the monster is realistic. It has imperfections, like it will trip and miss step and stuff.

You talking about the movie, where at the beginning those guys pour chemicals into a sink, and then later the monster comes out?
Theres a girl that does archery, and some kids get taken by the beast, etc?
I'm also going to recommend The Host, but am going to go against what Crashtard is saying and submit that while it has a humorous moment or two and the occasional bit of tackiness, it's actually a very well-done movie with a meaningful script. Metacritic shows it at 85% standing, which is pretty damn good (http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/host?q=the%20host).

The part that really REALLY bugged me about this movie: If someone is going to risk life and limb, and do as much work as these guys did to get away at the end...THEY WOULD HAVE STOPPED FOR FUCKING GAS! It's not that hard to siphon with a hose, or even just use a pump at a station somewhere...does he not know how to read his fuel gauge? Also, if the army was as close (1 minute away) as they were, you'd hear the tanks + trucks + flamethrowers. /rant
On the other hand, the Japanese film Battle Royale (spelling unsure) while corny, fits right in to that "people stuck in a real crap situation" surreal feeling I think you're going for. If you haven't seen them, I feel the 28 Days/Weeks Later movies were quite good, and they too fit the genra...genera? Genre... CURSE MY LAK OF SPLEINGL ABILTIY!

If you HATE yourself, watch the newer The Hills Have Eyes. So wrong.
If you like not vomiting, try Evil Dead and it's sequel>
And a second for the 28 (blanks) Later series. And 30 Days of Night.

The 28 Days Later recommendation is good, but Battle Royale simply doesn't compare to Cloverfield on any count.

Wait. That's out? For the secret santa from G&T I got the book of that, and it's awesome.
but rather the "fucked up situation that average people are experiencing without any clue what is going on atleast to begin with" aspect.
I'd say that the children in BR are definately average, and they're experiencing a VERY messed up situation, and they have no idea what's going on when it starts. It admittedly does get cleared up rather quickly for them, but I find that to be a matter of semantics.
Also, I forgot about Children of Men, absolutely loved that movie.
My mom was a little ticked at me because I recommended it, but my family has a history of joking that "everyone dies" at the end of a movie, so she didn't believe me when I warned her.
I've never heard of Right at Your Door but the IMDB made it look interesting.
Also, if you're looking for the same concept (characters normal/world weird) but funny, check out Hot Fuzz and Sean of the Dead. Brotherhood of the Wolf was a pretty good one too, that might fit the screwy world. Or possibly Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or The Number 23.

I just watched 30 Days of Night for the first time a few nights ago, and it's got what you need.
My recommendation is an agreement with 28 Days/Weeks Later.
But 28 Days Later is definitely the superior movie, for the whole "Ohshitwe'refuckedwhatdowedoheythere'speoplethatcanhelp" factor.

Movies & TV that are a drama first and sci-fi/horror second is what makes Cloverfield, BSG and Lost successes. You checked out Lost, right?
Though it leans more on the side of survival-1984 than survival-horror, Children of Men is flat awesome, and has a good deal of "oh fuck we're all dead"-type scenarios; though the enemy may not be supernatural in nature.

I seriously can't stomach the beginning of 28 Days Later
Where that girl takes an axe to her partner. I mean, seriously she hits him in the stomach instead of killing him in one hit in the head. It's fucked up... Then she's sitting there chopping him while he's screaming. Just makes me cringe for some reason.

I can stomach it, but maybe only because it's such a powerful scene.
I mean, she realizes HOW fucked they are, and she doesn't have those stereotypical horror movie qualms about what to do in that situation.
Alot of the movies Im seeing put up here are just more general horror or even dark comedy.... how is Evil Dead like Cloverfield? Although its hard to pin a movie exactly like Cloverfield so I guess I should be more lenient.
My suggestion would be "The Thing" The movie is a drama/horror with some monster scenes. The movie focus's more on what the people are doing in the face of horror rather than just "O HAI MONSTA LETS RUN!1!" type of film.

The truth. The actors' reactions to the shit that happens in this film are priceless.
"You gotta be fucking kidding." as the head creeps away. Priceless.
Add me to the list of those who did not enjoy The Host. I think i need to rewatch it. I wasn't expecting the more comedic elements of the film, and that threw me a bit.
While 30 Days of Night is not on the same level of destruction as Cloverfield, it does do the holy shit we're fucked vibe well. Especially the...
Overhead scene where the vamps massacre much of the town as a few people try in vain to fight back.
I think the question was "movies like Cloverfield in that 'oh fuck we're screwed' people in a desperate situation."
I think Evil Dead is like that, even if totally camp. Plus, Ash has great reactions to the monsters.

There really needs to be more big budget giant monster movies. Also zombie movies completely fit the bill for what I was looking for.
I know what you mean, Gear Girl. I like Cloverfield and War of the Worlds, though they're not what I'd call good movies. Just good alien havok. I guess Signs was better than these movies in ways, but again, alien havok is what's appealing.
I think my favorite movie in this quasi-horror genre is 28 Days Later. I heard the sequel 28 Weeks Later is shit though, from a reliable source.
Also, I Am Legend fits well into this category for the first half or so.

Totally agree with the I Am Legend until what I would call "Act II" of the movie.
That is some crazy good shit right there.
Of course, we get to his story after he's formulated how to react and whatnot, but it shouldn't deviate too far from what you're looking for.

I define a good movie presicely by how much it appeals to me, so Cloverfield and War of the Worlds are fantastic movies in my mind. To each his own though. Also for whatever reason I didn't particularly enjoy I Am Legend.

You're the second person I've heard talk about this movie [rec]. I HAVE to see it as it sounds like a movie right up my alley.
Someone mentioned The Hills Have Eyes remake - that is also an excellent suggestion. I think it's probably one the best horror movies made in the past decade. It has some intensely tough parts to watch though. Stay away from the sequel at all costs.
The Thing is also a superb suggestion and I'm ashamed I didn't think of it.
John Carpenter's The Thing is very much like Cloverfield, and also a very good movie. I'd certainly start there (if for some reason you haven't already seen it).

That movie upset me on so many levels.
The Descent is a pretty good average-people-experiencing-teh-crazy film, so check that out, even if it's pretty different to Cloverfield.
I'm a huge fan of the whole "survivor-horror, we're all screwed" types of movies as well so I see a lot of them. I'll add more as I think of them.
Yes, yes, yes. Just don't consume anything alcoholic or hallucinogenic beforehand.
Everyone should see this movie, if only once. It's not good, which is why it's worth watching. Made me laugh.
Edit: Wow, that was off topic. The only movie I can think of right now is blair witch, and you definitely should NOT watch that. Laaaame.

Sunshine is easily one of my favorite movies ever. So awesome.
28 Weeks Later is also really great, 28 Days Later wasn't quite as good but still worth watching.

I've heard the directors cut is significantly better, and I am planning on watching that this week.
Also, movies do have acts. Most Hollywood films have three. Independent films tend to vary.
edit - to respond to the OP, the original Alien has a lot of what you're looking for, I think. I also second 28 days later.
They both have their merits.
Oh... well... I still don't know what part you would label when
