I used to catch a few wanted stars in Los Santos, steal a plane, and then try to get to the abandoned airfield to grab a harrier.

I hope they add planes as DLC because there's something enjoyable about dodging missiles in a Cessna.
Anyone start planning potential Free For All games?

Rockstar created the "King Kong" one, and there was a discussion about a Die Hard with a Vengeance one (where one team would plant bombs around the city, and give the others riddles to find them).

    [snip]

    Anyone come up with others?

Just off the top of my head with what little I know of multiplayer:

Capture the Swag: One player, as referee, grabs a semi truck or other tough vehicle and tells everyone else to split into two teams and move to two given locations. The truck is then left somewhere roughly equidistant from the teams', wherein the ref declares its location and the place it must be driven intact (be careful when shooting near the truck; you might want to stick with precise headshots).
The winning team is the one that has a team member behind the wheel when it reaches its destination.

Mafia: One referee gives theo ther fifteen players a mission or a set of goals they must complete as a group. Nothing too complex or difficult, but it will keep the group split up around the city. However, three of those players are given a text message stating they are traitors and must discretely eliminate the others. The non-traitors are not allowed to randomly attack each other to root out traitors; they must vote on whom to kill, execution style (perhaps once every so many minutes), and the referee will note what side they were on.

Or maybe not. Maybe we'll just come up with other stuff on the fly and test it out ad-hoc.

Are NPCs and everything still in online mode? If so, free mode for me is basically going to be elaborate heists and getaways to a secret lair somewhere. Some people stand guard, one guy has a getaway car, everyone else goes into a bank or something or other.

I am becoming very paranoid that I didn't preorder though I know there will be numerous copies come Tuesday.
    BUT I AM SO PARANOID.

Strangely, preordering didn't help me much with that. Maybe it's just 'cause I imagine the worst in everyone, but all last week I had this horrible idea that some rat bastard at the Blockbuster I preordered from would like, steal my account info and take the game before I showed up on Tuesday.

Freakish. It's not going to happen - it is just paranoia - but the point is preordering didn't help at all. In fact it mighta' been a little worse, 'cause my worry wasn't just that I wouldn't have the game, but I'd be out $68.00 as well. (Everything will be fine, everything is okay, they aren't really out to get me...)

I have also been thinking of all the shit that could go wrong: There is a huge computer glitch at GS and I lose my game(and the $$), they short order and I am late, my 360 redrings, I steal my wifes 360 and it redrings, power failure at 12:01 AM, someone steals all my TVs, in my mad effort to get the box open I fling my disc into the waiting paper shredder, dog eats it. It goes on. Only 26 hours 59 minutse to go.
My worst nightmare already happened with the fuckups at EBstop putting me down for the WRONG version of the game and telling me it's too late to fix their mistake. So I just have to pray that they can fix it up when I come for the midnight launch.

Could always do something like 16 Blocks.

OR, turn off cops and pedestrians and you've got I Am Legend! Some are zombies/vampires and some are humans. Bad guys have to stay under bridges or something, inside buildings, during the day as the humans search for weapons and whatever.

To make it balanced, their base is way out of the weapon-spawn area. So they've got to be quick to go pick up ammo to prep for the... 14 zombies that come after you with... guns.

Epic sniper battles throughout a city, obviously.

Something like King Kong. A bunch of helicopters try to tackle a guy on the Empire State building who has a rocket launcher.

Pfft.. Just some random ideas from movies and whatever, nothing amazing.

I'm now convinced I'm going to get a RRD the minute I pop this game into the unit. I have no damn idea where this paranoia came from, but the fear has infected my soul will not leave. D:
My 360 got RROD'd about two months ago and although it interrupted a very enjoyable Mass Effect playthrough the 360 came back in less then 4 days working fine and as good as new. In retrospect if it lessens the chance of a rrod interupting GTA 4 then it all works out :)

I have a friend that works in a game store and he had opened up a copy early for the X-box 360 and PS3. I fooled around with the 360 version a bit and found myself crashing into invisible objects. There is a huge pop up problem with the 360 version but I figure its because the X-box we were using is faulty. The PS3 Version had no real pop up issues at all. Its a very pretty game though at any rate, but If I had a choice between the 360 and ps3 versions I would pick the ps3 to be on the safe side.

I hear all the comparisons for GTAIV on Ps3 and 360 and I think to myself

"Hm, none of that matters. GTAIV has exclusive DLC, end of story."

Then suddenly the decision becomes really clear.

Also, I thought there weren't supposed to be console wars.

Personally, I would rather have shorter load times and less pop-in than some extra missions I would have never played anyways. But to each his own.

I might agree, if not for the fact that everywhere that has actually seen and played the game says the graphical and load time differences are negligible. Extra exclusive DLC is not what I'd consider negligible. Honestly people, if you think it's just going to be a few missions, you're crazy.

how can you possibly know that. it could be as simple as the mass effect content, or a full blown $50 expansion, but no one knows... maybe not even rockstar games.

then if EA buys them, it further muddies things.
give the money back to microsoft, ship content to both systems.... and there you go.

I thought I read somewhere a Rockestar developer said they decided not to use planes because, just like Vice city, it's just too small of a map and with the realistic speed of a plane you just zoom over everything too fast for it to be even useful.

I can see that. In San Andreas a city took what, 10-20 seconds tops to fly over with a jet? It was the big open spaces that the planes were good at traversing.

Since they obviously decided to put heaps of work into the city (which I'm glad for, as I felt San Andreas cities level of detail suffered for the inclusion of the outside areas, and they felt shallower as cities) and not have big outdoor areas.

Sure they could have put in a prop plane I guess but even they kind of skirted the line speed wise. It didn't take that long to travel around a city in one.

Honestly, planes were not of practical use within the cities themselves. You could fly through the skyscrapers and stuff but in the end you ran out of city. They'd have to put heaps of countryside in the game to accomdate a plan (or boring stretches of open water) and I'm glad they decided to forgo that route for more detail within the city itself. You definitely couldn't fly down the city streets with one, except possibly the stunt plane?

    And I loved the planes.

If EA buys R*, and R* hasn't already made the DLC...well, some of you may be fucked. Hopefully it won't be as bad as buying cheat codes, but it probably won't be anything spectacular or inexpensive, if EA has any say. I'm not even in it for the DLC and the idea of EA getting their hands on the multiplayer scares me a bit. Sure, you could use the default weaponry, but for just $5.99 you can have a portable nuclear device, or maybe an APC for you and your homies to roll in.

Of course, this is all speculation.

I prefer helicopters to planes. Did all the way through San Andreas (what can I say, I like to fly things that I can land where I'll need them).

Which brings up an interesting question about GTA4: If you leave a vehicle somewhere that isn't a garage, will it still be there five minutes later? Too many times through the other GTAs, I'd park a car/bike/helicopter/Harrier, go inside an Ammunation and when I came back out it was gone. I really hope they fixed that particular annoyance...

    ...Holy shit, I just realized.

    No. Not for one plane.

Vice city had several different helicopters with different handling.

It IS too much work even to include a light plane with a new engine if you aren't going to include lots of planes. You have to code for the aerodynamics with a physics engine like that. They might have multimillion dollar budgets, but this means nothing. Just because there's a lot of money there doesn't mean it's valueless, or infinite. They decided it wasn't worth it, and put that money to neater ground based stuff.
