LANs: Racing & RTS Games

Last year I posted a thread asking for great LAN games and one of the winning suggestions was Wolfenstein ET, and it's been a popular choice ever since! :D (FYI the other games that are enjoyed are MOHAA Team Objective, UT2004 FFA/CTF, BF2 (still trying to convert some to CS1.6 or America's Army).

Obviously, all FPS games so it's time for a bit of variety. I've decided on putting an RTS and a Racing game in there to keep things from getting stale, and am wondering what you PA lanners play? Main rules is it has to be an slightly older game so you don't need a beast of a machine, and obviously a free or cheap game, or one that allows duplicate keys on LAN.

For an RTS game I'm thinking Dawn of War: Dark Crusade as the DOW games don't allow turtling as such, making games faster, and less down-time for those knocked out earlier.

For a racing game I'm not so sure. I was thinking FlatOut2 as it's great fun (closest I've seen to a PC Burnout) and it has destruction derby in it! But it has Starforce, and from memory is a buggy bastard of a game. Trackmania is free, but is not head to head as such, more time attack against ghost cars :| Are there any alternatives that make for exiting racing games? I see a freebie called Driving Force 2, but it looks a bit plain.

So LAN gamers, heap your knowledge upon me :D

I'd recommend Soulstorm over Dark Crusade for a LAN party, since you can physically punish people who abuse the glitches. I'd also recommend Universe at War, although I've heard that you can only have 4 computers per CD key for LANs, so try to have at least 2 copies.

    Starcraft.

    It just plain works.

I dont know if they allow replicate CD keys, though.

Well Dawn of War is definitely a good choice. Personally I would have recommended Company of Heroes but you said you wanted lower spec games.

Similar with Supreme Commander. Opposite end of the RTS spectrum (more about macro strategy instead of micro-management), but might be too system intensive.

Another good hybrid RTS / 4X game is "Sins of a Solar Empire". Be warned games can last a while, but it's a well done game that really does manage to capture the scale of 4X games and put it into a real-time strategy game. Plus it has really low system requirements, so you shouldn't have any problems running it.

There's a time limited demo that you can try that ought to give you a feel for the game and whether or not you guys would like it.

Racing games I don't really know much about.

Trackmania United would be a great LAN game, it's a great racing game overall and free

Wait, you can LAN this? I thought it was either single player or online.

Trackmania is definitely the way to go, in terms of racing games. It might not be a direct race, but really, it's just as competitive as any other game. The fact that you can't be knocked out also means that no one is just sitting around because there's no way they could still win the race, and you can get tons of people on a single game at once.

I would totally recommend World in Conflict as an alternative RTS, with great pick-up-and-play gameplay with virtually no player downtime, but it's not exactly light on system requirements.

Thanks for the points on Trackmania, I might go for it after all. Being free (and already downloaded) and a reasonably stable game are all other bonuses (sick of tech supporting on game day).

Supreme Commander & WiC are both too heavy, though I keep hearing good things about Sins so might have a look at that. Same with Starcraft :)
