umm... just buy a site that is spelled similar to a popular site..

begin whoring yourself and your crap out...

revel in being a gigantic douche.

Not sure what other advice would be helpful here.

does he mean he want to own the domain for a url that's a typo of some legit place a user would be trying to get to?

and filling the page with advertising and similar products/services to make money off of unsuspecting web users?

    Read up on it.

Be aware that you will be hassled by companies if it is a trademarked name.

    Also: What Apex said.

You've gotta become pretty well versed in business stuff to make it successful, probably. How does one of these things actually make money, anyway?

Helpfully redirect to the site you're spelled similar to and offer a look at your fine wares. Maybe some people will check it out because you were honest.

    What, like macrosoft.com or something?

I know there used to be a few relating to google, but they all seem to redirect to google.com now anyway - owners of those sites probably got harassed pretty fiercely by google to hand over the domains.

Ugh, I thought the title meant he wanted to start a site about typography.

I think you'd only make money off this sort of thing if you had millions of them.

Harassed with money. I remember when gogle.com was a big ad fest.

You could do it like Firefox.com did. Firefox was SOMETHING else I can't remember but the main page always offered to redirect you to the web browser site you actually wanted to go to. So you could make a border of ads and in the middle a "Were you looking for *****" link.

Yes, they serve up ads for your site based on a niche that you select.

Absolutely, yes. It will cost some cash up front, but it will pay off in the long term.

No, what he's trying to do is legit.

This book tells you what you need to know, start to finish. It's a little expensive, but worth it, since you'll be able to make at least $20,000 a year on this.

In addition, you will probably need a license for Visual Studio Pro (not express), since .NET is the best platform to make money from a website. A valid license will enable you to use ads from google, yahoo, and all the other top ad providers. You can get up to $30 a click-through. It's serious money.

You will only need the "professional subscription" one if you want to be able to make money from the site, so that will save you some cash:

I thought the professional edition of Visual Studio Pro capped your ad revenue at like 100 clicks per day. If you're get some good domains I would spring for premium. It would suck if you got 500 people trying to go to your links and you only got paid for 100 of them.

    thnx for the help...
i read up on this and it seems a lot of people who own these sites been getting sued by the legit companies so now i dont know if it will really work.
is there a more legitimate way of doing this without possibility of lawsuits?

The best thing to do will be to retain a lawyer ahead of time.

I imagine a good way of checking the most popular typos for a domain is by using Google Trends. If people misspell it in Google they probably misspell it in the address bar.

Of course, anything on that list is already going to be owned by one of the monster companies that own a few hundred of those sites already. But nice thought.

Seriously, this is just about the worst get rich quick scheme you could have thought up. The ship sailed on this one nearly a decade ago. Next you're going to come up with the brilliant idea to sell people discount pharmaceuticals via unsolicited e-mail, right?
