I'm getting married in a month. In about 5 days we have to submit the song list to the DJ company.

I need suggestions, bad. I don't want to do the same old & tired or cheesy songs that most people use.

Here's what I need ideas for,
Mother/Son Dance:
Combined Mother/Son and Father/Daughter Dance:
Combined Parents/Wedding Party Dance:

    First off congrats.

But can you specify if not old & tired or cheesy songs what kind are you looking at?

Mother/Son dance I used The Beatles - In My Life

Wedding Party Dance I used the 311 cover of the Cure's Love Song. You could use the orignial as well, it's just as good or better. I was at a wedding last summer that used the chicken dance for this, but they had a very light hearted and non traditional reception. Good for a laugh though.

Don't forget to take advantage of a "No Play" list if your DJ company lets you, assuming they do requests (most do). Mine was basically "No Country", but whatever works for you is fine. A pet peeve of mine is weddings that play "I Will Survive" and "Hey Ya" and the like. Both were really popular songs at weddings the year I got married (3 years ago), and are about not needing a man, and only wanting sex, not a real relationship, respectivly. I encourage you to put the kaibash on them and their ilk.

Also, just a general song recommendation: KC and the Sunshine Band: Boogey Shoes. It's hard not to dance to that song.

My fiance and I have pretty broad music tastes. It's not that I don't like most songs that are used for these dances, but I've been to a lot of weddings and have noticed the trends.

Here's what we've decided on so far,
Wedding Party Entrance: "Just Dropped In" - Kenny Rogers and the First Edition (I love The Big Lebowski. D:)
Bride & Groom Dance: "Shelter" - Ray Lamontagne
Wedding Party Dance: "I'll Stand By You" - The Pretenders

You know what you need to do.
    Rickroll everyone at your wedding.
Anybody who's in on the joke will swear undying vengeance on you, assuming they can get any sort of proper invective out through the unavoidable laughter. People who aren't will just think "Oh, I remember that old song, how cute."

(I mean, it *is* a catchy song, you have to admit. And it's pretty perfect for a wedding, really).

I got married this past weekend, and put off picking the mother/son song until the day before. My mom had a ton of suggestions, but they were either 8+ minutes long (waltzes) or good tunes where the lyrics were about death (I dunno, guess she never listens to the words).

I ended up picking Tony Bennett "God Bless the Child" because it's classy, not too fast of a tempo, and overall a pretty short song at just over 2 minutes.

Earth, Wind, and Fire - September.

    Great wedding song.

Can't get more cliche than Billy Joel's 'For The Longest Time.' Still a great song.

And, this might be kind of iffy, but Ben Fold's 'Zak and Sara' might be a fun wedding dance thing.

The Chicken Dance is great when everyone's drunk late in the party.

F the chicken dance, and F the electric slide. When both came on at my wedding I disappeared myself into the bathroom.

For the bride/father dance I would recommend "Father and Daughter" by Paul Simon... It's a sweet song but not overboard like that goddamned "Butterfly Kisses" crap.

I went to a wedding once where the groom and mother danced to Metallica's "The Unforgiven".... that was awkward... we all just sat there kind of ..... staring.

That's funny, my wife and I had a string arrangement of Nothing Else Matters during the wedding and got lots of compliments on it.

There's a difference between a string arrangement and the actual song straight off the CD, IMHO

At my best friends wedding, the wedding party exited to a live string trio playing "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys, which was pretty incredible.

I'm sure this falls under the category of cheesy for most people but my wife and I danced to "Come What May" from Moulin Rouge!
