WORLD DESTRUCTION!
Also one of the prettiest games on the DS!
The latest issue of Famitsu has the first report on an original DS RPG being developed by Image Epoch and set to be published by Sega. Titled World Destruction, the game is drawing lots of attention due to its staff, which includes people who worked on Xenosaga, Chrono Trigger, Grandia and Final Fantasy VII.
World Destruction is set in world in which humans are ruled by beasts. Humans have formed an organization, the World Destruction Committee, whose goal is to destroy the world. You play as Kirie, a new member of this organization, and someone who, it turns out, has the secret power needed for the world's destruction. As the game progresses, Kirie heads out on adventure to find allies in order to bring about the destruction of the world.
Visually, the game combines sprite-based characters with 3D backdrops. From what we can tell, the backdrops are quite detailed, particularly during battle scenes, which make use of both screens to display the action.
We don't have too many details on the specifics of that battle system at the moment, but it appears that the game will feature turn-based battles with a few features pulled from the fighting genre. Proper button timing is required for the most damage. You also have access to cancel commands for stopping your attacks. Height will also play an important role during combat.
As for that big staff that's causing all the buzz, Famitsu reports that the game is being worked on by a staff of over fifty. Included in the bunch are Masato Kato as scenario writer (former work on Xenogears, Final Fantasy VII and Chrono Trigger), Kunihiko Tanaka as main character designer (former work on Xenogears and Xenosaga), and Yasunori Mitsuda as composer (prior work on Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross and Xenogears). The game's director, Kyoki Mikage, comes from Image Epoch and previously directed Luminous Ark. Sega's Yoichi Shimosato is producer, having previously worked on games like Shining Force. Outside of this, the game's visual and character staff has support from the people who worked on Grandia, Drakengard, and Ertain Odyssey.
Development on what's sure to be one of the biggest DS RPGs this year is at 70% complete, Famitsu reports, with a Japanese release planned for the summer. Sega is really pushing this in Japan, with an anime and manga planned to kick off in July, so we can probably expect an international release.

Sprite based RPGs are like comfort food to me. Especially ones that look this good. Another shining example of the new look SEGA!

Loves me some traditional RPGs.
Come on, Japan, can't you see wearing frilly dresses and bows to a fight is a weird idea?
relative to some of their other weird preferences that one's not so major
This is their new role as a publishing house. It seems to be hit or miss for them, but I think the hits are starting to outweigh the misses. I think it is a smart move.
Destroying the world probably involves collecting six crystals, each guarded by progressively tougher bosses. The usual. Don't get your hopes up until more plot info is released.
Sega's been trying to become a publishing powerhouse since sammy took over. They were making a conscious effort to emulate the styles of, say, capcom - a major company who publishes more than they produce each year. Still, they claimed they were going to make a drastic change in direction towards the west (which explains the new Aliens game, their close relationship with Gearbox, contacting bioware to make the sonic RPG, etc), which is why this title surprises me.
But it's a pleasant surprise.
It would be awesome if the party members were basically a whole bunch of Kefkas.
Edit: Are retarded weapons a requirement for Square Enix games?
I wouldn't limit it to just SE games, all JRPGs have at least one character with a really silly weapon.
Fixed that..
Seriously, I'm all about this shit. Nice character designs, though I feel a little faggy for liking them.
1. Someone has an unwieldy looking weapon.
2. Someone is dressed like a drag queen on cocaine who is himself going to some sort of trashy costume ball.
3. You kill a cute looking rat rabbit thing.
4. Someone in your party has wings and is either an angel or a demon.
There are probably a few more. I like 'em this way and I hope they never change.
Not kidding. Serious question!
I would say 1 and 3 are in all of them. 2 and 4 are in most of them.
I'm sure there's at least one. I'd go through my list but that would require effort.
It's like every bad jRPG cliche mashed into one! Still, I like the graphical style (not so much the character designs, though) and Yasunori Mitsuda means I'll definitely give it a chance.
In fact, a lot of RPGs from the SNES and prior era don't have at least three of those. Mostly because a lot of them didn't actually show you what the weapons looked like.

Well obviously they do, why else would they wear them so much?
Hip boots are hot, fuck you if you don't like them.
I hope this game has random battles, I really do.
Yeah, but that's also like saying:
It's not a FPS games have:
1) Guns
2) Exploding Barrels
3) Ammo that drops out of crates
4) First Person View
Makes sense to me.
For realz though, this looks pretty interesting.
Pass.
So what you're saying is that you don't like JRPGs? Why would you come in this thread?
I've been hurt before
Hug?
"Well, what I was trying to say before was that dreams are like the sun, because they are warm, and birds. And one day I hope that animals and birds and stars will be friends."
And you ultimately realise that your latent power that will save the day/destroy the world, is just the thing needed to put all differences aside and usher in a new era of peace, thus saving the world from destruction.
Except it turns out someone malevolent was manipulating your organisation so they could use what you've achieved to rule the world instead, and you must now spend the second half of the game stopping them. In the process you will realise the world doesn't need destroying after all.
