So I won a raffle today at work and got a PS3, and am stuck here for the next hour and a half. Question I want to ask is about the controller; it's wireless, but does it come with a wire if I want to play with a wired controller (i.e., not worry about battery packs and all that)? Or is there some extra kit I have to pick up for that?
I tried scouring Wikipedia real quick and came back fruitless.
It was a 40GB, the Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray bundle deal.
I couldn't believe it, I was in the lab doing work while everyone was outside having ice cream and everyone came in like "Dude, you just won the PlayStation 3." I told them to get the shit out of their mouths because they're full of shit and such a thing wasn't possible (I knew it was being offered as a prize beforehand, but thought my chances of winning were next-to-none). And then my boss comes over and sets the PS3 box down on the table and is like "Congratulations."
I couldn't believe it, for about twenty minutes afterwards, I was like "No way, there's just...no way. I don't believe it. No way."
Lucky bastard, congrats. But yeah its a standard mini usb cable. Either buy a longer one or use a standard usb extension cable. Why wouldn't you use wireless though? The charge lasts a long time as long as you turn it off when you aren't using it. (No idle auto-off, but will shut off when console does.)
Also I don't know what your TV situation is at home, but the ps3 only comes with composite cables. So if you have a half decent TV you'll probably want to pick up a hdmi if possible or component cable. Any standard hdmi cable will do as long as you go 6 foot or less, don't be suckered into monster. If you want to use component or s-video cables you can use ps2 or ps3 branded ones, they are exactly the same. (ps3 is backwards compatible with ps2 cables)
If you have a 1080p tv grab hdmi because if you choose component you'll be limited to 1080i for blu-rays.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

WTF? I just got home to find this. The PS3 doesn't come with component cables? IT'S A FUCKING BLU-RAY PLAYER FOR FUCK'S SAKE.
Gah. Oh well, I think component cables are only like $20 or $30.
As for the controller's wireless, doesn't it run on standard batteries? ...I suppose I could open it myself and find out now.
EDIT: Ooh, I just opened it and a "Play Beyond" disc, now my shelf will look like it contains two Blu-Rays.
EDIT AGAIN: Oh, I guess it doesn't run on standard batteries, 360-style. Awesome!

If you have component cables for PS2, that should also work.
I got a random playstation 3 controller question for everyone. It's bluetooth, so can you have a bluetooth enabled computer just find it and use it?
no..unlike the 360 controller however when its plugged in via usb it transmits all data via usb too, and there are community made usb drivers for it. They are rather iffy to get working and barren feature wise however =/
Just had to run back to the store to get some component cables (got a 3-in-1 for all three systems since they didn't have official Sony ones...a nice deal if I didn't already have my Wii and 360 HD cables). Also had to get a converter to make my two-prong plug a three-prong.
About to fire this baby up!
This is the first time in any given generation where I've owned all the consoles.
I thought bluetooth was intended to be universal, kinda defeats the purpose if they make it so only the ps3 can use it...
You can use the controller via bluetooth on the comptuer. The only weird bit is how the sixaxis/DS3 does its pairing, instead of doing the button search thingy it does the pairing over the usb cable. But you can download a utility to do the pairing on pc via usb and then you can use it wirelessly.

It comes with a cable, but it's incredibly damn short, and is good only for charging the controller while the thing is off and sitting next to the console. Pick up one of these. Much better and cheap as hell.

Oh and congrats on getting the PS3.
Lucky devil. Did you win a 40 or an 80 gig?

Do not engage the Watermelons.
Yar, it's an internal battery or some such. They last something like 10-15 hours fully charged, and can go from empty to full charge in 15-30 minutes.
LoL: failboattootoot
You're gonna love it. Make sure to pick up Warhawk!

Gonna check out the PSN store...
EDIT: Hell yes. Spyro, Crash 1-3, Jumping Flash, MediEvil...I'm already happy.
Buy Warhawk. The PS3 version, not the original PSX version. You can buy it on PSN. Trust me, it's awesome.
It's online only, though, so beware.
Too bad about the no warhawk, realy is my favorite online experience once you scale the wall they call a learning curve.
