cheap, reliable external hard drive

i'm not sure if someone's brought this up before (there was one relevant hit in the search engine, but it didn't help as much).

i'm looking for a fairly large (250 gb to 500 gb) external for less than $100. I remember black friday having insane deals on such drives, but it's long past black friday and the prices seem to be much cheaper.

however, newegg doesn't seem to show much with the amount of reviews some of the cheaper drives have.

i don't care much for aesthetics or the shape of the drive. the only real thing i care about is the sound it puts out and the danger of it overheating. i have a fantom drive that holds about 100 gb, but that's getting fairly old despite it being incredibly reliable.

anyone have any suggestions? thanks.
