Normally I'd be inclined to agree with you but I think, taken with the context of the story, what she did is meant to be ironic. This is an example of a writer thinking that he's being clever when really all he's doing is undermining his point.

edit: Furthermore, the very fact that she can syphon power from homosexuals and "see" a homosexual with her homo-vision also implies that there is something intrinsically different about people who are homosexuals. I'm pretty sure who you fuck has no bearing on your physical being. Last I checked homosexuals were indistinguishable from any other person. That's what makes them so terrifying.

I'm not saying I definitely know what the writer was thinking, and your interpretation is potentially correct, but I still think mine is the one intended. Still, I guess we won't ever know.

As to your edit though, I must strenuously disagree: your sexuality is significantly (but not entirely) determined by your biology, not your psychology. A wide variety of studies have shown that sexuality is primarily determined by biology, and then merely focused by psychology (this is the so-called spectrum theory of sexuality, where you are born somewhere on the spectrum between pure-gay and pure-straight, and then society socializes you into a slightly different position). It's not unreasonable that her power could detect the underlying biological difference.

Alternately, you could say that she's reading their psychological sexuality the same way Green Lantern rings read psychological force of will, etc.

I don't know. I don't really buy in to anybody trying to empirically quantify anything like homosexuality or blackness, or asianness or whatever. It always reminds me of that Dr. Rushton fellow I had to study in my undergrad.

edit: I'm an editing machine today. To clarify, I know there are biological and, therefore, quantifiable characteristics to race. It's the extrapolation some people apply to it that drives me nuts.

Well, it's very different to talk about biological precursors to sexuality vs. race. The reason is that "race" is just a collection of biological traits, i.e. it's a set of them. Thus, it is possible for a person to possess only a subset of the traits that define a given race; in other words, a person may partially occupy two or more races (and in fact, almost everyone does so) and thus be reasonably called a member of either or both.

Sexuality, on the other hand, is a single trait. While I'm not saying it has a single genetic locus, it is a single indivisible trait. Put differently, you either are homosexually attracted to some degree, or not at all (and conversely, either heterosexually attracted to some degree, or not at all).

Thus, it is more meaningful to talk about whether a person is biologically straight/gay/bi versus whether they are biologically a member of a given race. Race is a social construct, sexuality isn't (though, perhaps gender is, but that's more complicated).

I dunno, I think when people get all bent out of shape about gay jokes people are taking themselves too seriously.

People are consistantly made fun of for who they are, and what they do. I'm a fat ass, people call me a fat ass. my sister has the sense of humor of a retarded giraffe (none at all), and frankly, it's over-reacting.

I think Trey Parker and Matt Stone said something to the effect that if you can't find the humor in something, that makes you a racist, and predujuice against everything else you could find the humor in.

and besides, the thought of butt sex is kind of silly, come now.

another thing to remember about the sleeper origins is that i think you kind of have to balance how much truth there is in them with exactly which character is telling it. the whole series is about lies and deception.

genocide's is probably pretty much true though, since i don't think he was really smart enough or interested enough to make up an origin.

If it was a joke I wouldn't have a problem with it. My issue stems from what the writer is unintentionally articulating via what he put on paper. Anywho, this really isn't the place for this discussion and I know how frustrating it gets when people go down a rabbit hole so I'll just can it here.

You have to have read the previous years of story: basically, he's watching as these Lovecraftian demons, who for years have believed they were controlling the world and were now about to exit the universe, bump up against the glass boundaries. He tricked them into living in that prison, and they hadn't realized it until then. It's quite neat.

Effectively it's the conclusion to Zenith. It's pretty long but to sum it up....

The bad guys have won. Lovecraftian horrors have turned the Earth and all of the other Earth's into a slaughter house. Our hero? Dead. All of his allies? Dead. All of humanity? Dead. How did they die? Slowly and painfully.

And as these horrors who were once human complete their evolution they seek out the stars and try to find god....only to run into the wall. This whole time having been trapped and tricked into an alternate universe that was one of their own, tricked by the one member of the group who kept their humanity.

Written up like that seems really cheesy, and a bit of hand waving but it works in the story to provide a wonderful twist ending.

Scans Daily had a series of posts for it and that's the best you're likely to find unless you can track down all of the 2000 A.D. issues. There were a series of trades done but they've been out of print for a long time. And there is a dispute about copyright which prevents it from returning to print. Which is a damn shame because if I remember correctly, this is Grant Morrison's first published comic work.

Black Bolt has trained himself in the specific way he has so he doesn't make a sound no matter what. Some other form of communication beyond what's already been established might make him loosen up his mental reserves just enough for something to slip, and that'd be catastrophic. At least, that's how I imagine it.
