So are they going to drop the price of the touch? I mean it doesnt make a ton of sense to have a 8gb player with less features than the phone for 100 bucks more

Well I mean, one you have to pay 70+ dollars a month for. Over a two year service contract that's the initial iPod Touch... more than four times.

if there a way to get around having a contract for it and using it without the phone/3G part of it, like the old iphone, ill probably get one to replace my old ipod nano
either that or buy a G1 iphone on the cheap when everyone starts to sell theirs in a few weeks
I'm in a family plan with unlimited data with AT&T. I have a Blackberry on EDGE.
If I wanted to get an iPhone in July, could I just buy the iPhone from an Apple Store, pop in my sim card, and go? Would it be 3G, or would I have to go upgrade my plan? Would it still be $199? Also, somewhat as important, could they ship it a US iPhone internationally?
at the moment it doesnt seem like there will be an easy way to buy the phone without going into contract. at least not as easy as it used to be. supposedly the iphone will now have to be activated INSTORE and if they are not activated after 30 days something about at&t going after you. i wish i was kidding.
everyone seems to be happy about the new iphone except honestly with the new prices for the at&t plans im rather bummed. 10 bucks more for data and now that doesnt include texts at all so now you have to pay for the amount of texts you want. also at&t's 3g network is still not everywhere so im paying more when at the moment ill be in an area that still only has edge. super.

Wait wait wait, are you saying it is not 10 bucks more a month for the data plan yet they are removing features like texting from it so you have to pay separately?

The fact that they lowered the iPhone price by 200 is negated by the fact that they upped the data plan by 10 a month for 3G iPhone.. and since you're in a 2 year contract: 10*12*2=240 > 200... lol.. sneaky

precisely.
How did they get away with that one, and how much more will it cost?
Steve Jobs did say $199 everywhere, but that would be stupid cheap due to a shitty US economy and wouldn't take local taxes into account.
Hell, that's less than an iPod Touch over here.
Unless i'm missing something it seems like they're...lets say "shaping" the truth with that statement. It looks like the 8 gig is 199$ in the US and Canada, sure. But in the US its 199$ with a 2 year contract, in canada it's a 3. So yeah sure, same cash price, but different "sell your soul to the phone company" price.

at&t is no longer giving apple a cut of the monthly rates so there are no longer special iphone plans as we once knew them. so now people are going to pay for the same type of data plans as the rest, ie no special frills like 200 free text messages.
so it is now $30 data plan
+ $5 for 200 texts, $15 for 1500 texts, or $20 for unlimited. (or at least i think its 20 it might be 30)
in otherwords the equivalent of the cheapest previous iphone plan 450 minutes plus data/200 texts which used to be $60 is now $75
Wait, holy shit, $199? That is gonna cannibalize iPod Touch sales.
Edit: Wait, no, maybe not, monthly fee and all.
But wow, that's almost the price of the cheapest iPod Nano.
...do you think they'll be clearing stock of the old phones for cheap? I wouldn't mind getting a 2G iPhone for $99 or less.
Let me say holy fuck again. That white is sexy. Matches my Wii, DS, TV, and current Mac perfectly. Too bad I just got a new V3. Oh well, one day.
Edit 2:
My prediction: at least 50% of current GPS manufacturers go out of business by the start of 2010 because everyone will just have their iPhone mounted to their dash.
...do you think they'll be clearing stock of the old phones for cheap? I wouldn't mind getting a 2G iPhone for $99 or less.\.
Alas, that was what I had been waiting for until mid-May, when the 2.5G phones went permanently out of stock.
Which is really kind of crazy, in that Apple's going to have gone over two months here without being able to sell a single iPhone.
What I'm holding out for is a refurb v1 iPhone next time they're back in stock, though it'll probably go for about $200 since the first one wasn't subsidized by AT&T.
Honestly the whole forced contract bullshit pisses me off so much that even though i'd love to have one i'm going to hope windows mobile device prices drop in order to better compete and pick something from that line up instead. Fuck forced contracts, and anyone who encourages them (this means you apple)

Same boat on my end. I sort of expected at least one other option that let you renew monthly from the start of service.

Pretty much. And what the hell happened to the Snow Leopard demonstration? Was that going to be a showfloor demo only?

Interestingly, 10.5 was pitched as a Developer focused OS as well, perhaps Apple is ploughing a lot of cash into R&D, waiting for a real feature for the users, rather than the kinda incremental stuff.

I find interesting that the site there doesn't make any mention of "10.6" so Snow Leopard, as the name implies, seems to be Leopard Service Pack 1.
Snow Leopard is the version of OS X I've been wanting since 10.4. Few new features, but just a general improvement all round. Give OS X a bigger headstart as the world's most advanced OS.
Here's a live youtube link of the iPhone section (or at least part of it):
Like, you can't even pause it and let it buffer.
Fuck apple, that shit is so basic.
Look, it's only because a million people are trying to watch the damn thing.
Wait a day or two and it will be up on iTunes on Apple's Keynotes podcast. Then you can download the whole thing.
I've been told this... I don't see how that should prevent it from pre buffering tho.
Australians are going to get raped so hard on data with the iPhone plans.
I dunno...Are we? I saw a plan that was 29 dollars a month and had unlimited SMS, and unlimited internet. Seems like a good deal to me? I don't know anything about phone plans though.
I wonder what the family plans are going to be. Before, I was eyeing the $109.99 for 2 lines, 700 mins 200 txt, unlimited data. If that holds true, then iphones for the whole family!
Now, for that pesky 1 year left on my t-mobile contract with new t-mobile dash's. Anyone interested in taking over?

Where and with who? Are you sure it was an Australian provider?
Hmm... so, they drop the price $200, but change the plan and remove texts.
So if you want the base data plan, plus the extra texts, thats $30 + $5 = $35 extra a month, compared to your regular cell phone service
And they tie you to a 2 year contract, so, $35 x 2y x 12mo = $840
And, let's say I go for the 8GB iPhone, so $199 + $840 = $1039
Therefore the net additional cost of me owning an iPhone compared to my basic whatever phone I have right now, is an extra $1039 + tax.
Now I'm not so sure.
That's a shit ton of money.

So, wait, you're not paying for the plan on your current phone? How'd you manage that?

No, I mean, that is the cost in addition to what I am paying for my phone now.
As in, that's the extra to own an iPhone over my phone that just makes calls and sends texts.

I'll be in line for the new iPhone. The $200 discount is what I needed to make this happen.
