No, I mean, that is the cost in addition to what I am paying for my phone now.
As in, that's the extra to own an iPhone over my phone that just makes calls and sends texts.

So what does your phone cost now?
The phone itself was free, I'm on a family plan and we're paying 89.99 a month for 4 lines and all our phones were the free with contract variety.

Funny, 89.99 a month comes out to $1079.88 a year on my calculator.
According to Engadget.com you can only buy and activate 3G iPhones in store. I think online ordering will be available but Mac Romors is reporting that AT&T will penalize you if you don't activate within 30 days.

Yes, this is very confusing at the moment. AT&T says you can ONLY activate in store, but then also says that you must activate within 30 days or be penalized. What the heck does that mean? Can you therefore buy it at the store and activate at home?
Are they truly not going to sell ANY iPhones online? That seems like a poor decision and it WILL cut into sales. Also, I can't imagine Apple stores doing activation BS. The logistics alone are mind-boggling.
Either A)The AT&T person is speaking out of their ass or "Activation" will require nothing more than scanning a barcode on a box and pushing some buttons on the computer. You'll still activate the thing at home with iTunes.
I guess it will all sort itself out as the launch date approaches.

I imagine they'll require a credit card for purchase/preauth/etc, and if you don't activate it they charge you $Assload. Of course, that's in eyestrain-inducingly small print in the contract.
But yes, this will need to be sorted out. I can't see it working out well.

Looking for a DX:HR OnLive code for my kid brother.
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.
Hmm... so, they drop the price $200, but change the plan and remove texts.
So if you want the base data plan, plus the extra texts, thats $30 + $5 = $35 extra a month, compared to your regular cell phone service
And they tie you to a 2 year contract, so, $35 x 2y x 12mo = $840
And, let's say I go for the 8GB iPhone, so $199 + $840 = $1039
Therefore the net additional cost of me owning an iPhone compared to my basic whatever phone I have right now, is an extra $1039 + tax.
Now I'm not so sure.
That's a shit ton of money.
Sure, because wireless internet costs money.
From what I remember of other mobile internet devices, you'd be looking at an additional $200 over your $1039, or more.
Well, I've decided at 200 bucks, I'm going to get an iPhone if I get my new job, since then I'll be a big important sort of dude that actually needs to use a phone. Previously I've hated phones and just never cared enough to try and get 'em to work, but an iPhone looks friendly enough. And, I'll have to be away from home a lot so I'd like internet on the go.
The net total additional cost for me is £99. Makes the decision a lot easier when you already own a gen 1 iPhone. In fact, I could even downgrade my plan and the 18 month net cost would only be £9.00 more than what I'm already paying.
£9.00 for a GPS navigator? Are you kidding me? (incidentally, has anyone seen the GPS in action? How does it compare to 'real' GPS devices?)
Well, I'd decided that after the keynote, I'd buy a new MBP. (If they launched new models, yay, if not, the current ones are still nice indeed)
And so, having placed my order and said thanks to whoever decided to give Higher Education students an even better discount, I have a 2.4Ghz MacBook Pro on its way.
How well does TF2 run in Boot Camp, if anyone's tried?
I was all about this until they announced the $10 increase in data plans. I'm paying nothing for being on my family's VZW family plan right now, so I go from nothing to $70+tax a month. It took me a year to come around on the idea of $60 and then they throw this out there. Does anyone know if ATT is able to waive activation fees if you hardline them on switching from another provider?

My MBP is a year and a half old, and the whole Orange Box runs fine on Boot Camp. HL2 runs great with highest video settings, while you might have to tone it down a little bit on the later games. TF2 and Portal are fine and look great. I've also played through Bioshock (low-medium settings), and the CoD4 demo. Basically I use my XP partition as an FPS machine
Note that you'll probably be able to run higher settings than me w/ a brand new machine.
if you are in the us you are stuck with at&t. im assuming that the high capacity iphone 32gb will occur 6 months from now sorta like how the first generation 16gb came about.
well to be fair this is a gsm phone and the only other provider in the us is really tmobile. and its not like they even really have a 3g network at the current moment.

What do you mean, like calling up AT&T and saying you want to get an iPhone but are on the fence and if they could do a little "convincing" you could see your way towards dropping your current provider and going with them?

Pretty basic, really. The tracking is GREAT, but it all happens on google maps at the moment, which is the suck when you are driving.
But do not fear, TomTom already has a version of their software running on the new iPhone, and plan to release it to the app store at some point in the near term.

Exactly. I talked down the price on my HDTV. Most people today never even try, but for a cell phone store that probably has to make numbers on new subs, I would imagine they have some leeway to waive some fees.

Well with the iPhone you buy the phone and activate it with an AT&T subscription on iTunes at home. So would you call them up before or after the fact?
I really wish Rogers was willing to let people know what the data plans for canadian iPhones are gonna cost. I was chatting with a service rep, who told me every time that they won't know iPhone pricing till the 11th. Then she started even denying that the iPhone was coming on the 11th, after she had practically told me otherwise. I said fuck this and slammed that red close-window circle hard. I hope she felt it.
My current contract ends the end of this month, so I'd only hold off without a phone for a couple weeks if I knew the plans were gonna be reasonable. If I can't know for sure, I may be forced to skip this iPhone rev.

The 3G iPhone will require in-store(Apple store as well as AT&T) activation.

Weird, I was in the Apple store yesterday and they said you just take it home and activate it over iTunes.. they must have not known the details on the 3G one yet.

So I'm going to try and call up AT&T and work something like that out, but I'm not familiar with the iPhone plan, so what exactly would I be trying to have them wave or give me a deal on so I don't go in blind?

You're mid contract with another provider? I don't think there's anything to do other than pay the early termination fee(unless it's less than the remaining months) and get the iPhone. AT&T will have plenty of business and won't need to offer anyone anything to get them to buy iPhones.
I was talking specifically about the activation fee for the new phone. I know occasionally you can get someone to waive this for you, especially if you're canceling with one provider to get a plan with another. I won't say it's surefire, especially for iPhones, and I wouldn't go on day one with a huge line and try to make a deal, but after the $10 increase I want to feel like I've had at least a Pyrrhic victory over the corporate greed.
Is it just me or does Steve look like he lost weight? His face and neck area look so much slimmer.
Almost anorexic, really.
Anywho, now I'm wondering if I should go ahead and grab my bitchin' iMac now or wait for the next revision.
iMacs, really everything right now, should be OK to buy. I'm not sure when Apple would be able to sneak in the next major round of updates. Normally they do it at the major conferences, and Macworld won't be until January.
Also, yeah Steve did look really thin. At the very beginning of either Gizmodo's or Macrumors' live coverage of the keynote mentioned they mentioned they thought he looked thinner than they'd ever seen. Maybe the stress of dealing with a major cellular carrier in 70+ countries, and every major movie and music studio in the US is catching up with him. :P
[edit] Haha, someone at the Wall Street Journal blogged about this. Apple said Jobs was recently hit by a "common bug".

I'm going to hand down my current cell to my little brother, let him take over and get an iPhone while transferring over the number from my old phone.

Hopefully his cancer isn't back. The last time he looked badly thin was when he was battling pancreatic cancer (and won, against the 95% odds of otherwise).
