So in preparation of my new computer I've been copying stuff over to my external Hard Drive. It was easy enough to find where my iTunes music and iPhoto stuff is stored, but where can I local my e-mails, and where do I drop this on the new computer so all my existing messages get put into the app?
The mighty mouse isn't quite a two-button mouse; you can't left-click and right-click at the same time. Plus it's kinda irritating having to pick up your left-click finger every time you want to right-click.
What are you, constantly pressing down on the mouse? I've never had to lift my finger to click the opposite side. Also, the scroll ball (like every other mouse) is also a button. Assign that to button 3 / simultaneous left and right click / whatever the hell.

You would probably be pretty safe just grabbing the entirety of your ~/Library/Mail/ folder.
Maybe. Details are a bit sketchy but the screenshots of 10.6 so far show the title of Sys Prefs as "System Preferences (32-bit)". This could mean two separate versions, or just a 32-bit developer version or something else altogether.
I wouldn't get a wireless keyboard and mouse personally. You'll spend half your life shouting at them as they run out of battery or disconnect at annoying moments.
Have you ever used Apple wireless keyboards and mice? Not only do they give you incredibly significant warning (I'm talking weeks here) they tend to last forever. I think I've changed the batteries in my keyboard a whole three times since I got it in February 2007. The mouse has had them cycled about 10 times. Either way, I know when the batteries are going down. The mouse can also run off a single battery if you need it.

Does anyone know if the education discount applies to the iPhone?
Highly doubtful. The iPhone won't be available via the Apple Store anymore as far as I can tell. I haven't really read the news of the last 18-24 hours but the impression so far has been that you can only buy an iPhone at the AT&T Store.

im not sure where you heard that the new iphone's dimensions were similar to the ipod touch but that doesnt quite add up... sure it is tapered so it is thinner at the ends but it is actually thicker the the current iphone by just a little bit in the center.
ipod touch 4.3 x 2.4 x 0.3 inches
3g iphone 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.48 inches (115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3 mm)
iphone 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.46 inches (115.0 x 61.0 x 11.6 mm)
By all accounts, the curvature of the edges makes it unnoticeable. I don't think it's a huge deal.
no i dont care that it is actually thicker. im replying to the guy who wanted to know the specs and mentioned that ipod touch cases would somehow fit the new iphone...
I have some iPhone questions. I work in a Mac environment and we use Entourage for scheduling and e-mail. How easy or hard would it be for me to have my work e-mail and calendars go to the iPhone? Would I have to sync my phone to my work computer? Because I don't want to do that, I would want it synced to my personal laptop. I'm sort of confused by all that stuff.

Whenever I've used a mighty mouse and had both fingers resting on their respective sides and tried to right-click, it registers as a left-click. The scroll ball might be better for horizontal scrolling than a tilt-wheel, but it's very awkward to use as a button. The fact is there's no way the mighty mouse's "two halves of one button" can be as versatile as two buttons, and there isn't really any reason not to split it. For another example, I don't know if it still does this since I usually only work with a trackpad recently, but Firefox used to let you use both mouse buttons for "Back" and "Forward" controls - rolling from a right-click to a left-click would go back, and from a left-click to a right-click would go forward. Impossible to do with a combined button.

Shit. Looks like the random blog I went to was wrong, and that I'd be better served getting a regular iPhone case in anticipation of the 3G iPhone.
they will probably have cases on hand when it launches i would wait since the old cases just wont fit right on the new iphone.
infact most of the companies were seeded information to make new cases. griffin seems pretty postive their cases will launch with more then enough time so your iphone is instantly kept pristine. (although i personally prefer not to case)
Well it looks like I'll be getting an iPhone 3G. I'd been holding out since the original iPhone announcement last year.
I'm on a family plan with Verizon, so I just never bothered my father about it since he paid my bills. He called me up yesterday and asked me if he thought we should switch and get iPhones, I said yea
In all honesty, it is actually cheaper than the plan we currently have now. He has unlimited data on his phone for work (they compensate him $75 a month for phone usage) and that costs like $45.
I'll be interested to see if we can recreate some kind of shared plan with AT&T and iPhones, but for some reason I feel like it'll just be like buying two separate plans
In SE++ I brought up the fact that all this iPhone gaming talk has me wondering if Jobs has his eye on the PC gaming market...
it could be done.
There's no disputing that PC gaming is suffering on account of PC's themselves, in terms of cost and compatibility. Apple could address the ladder with ease, and if the iPhone is any indication they could probably deal with the former.
I'm biting the bullet and purchasing the cheapest MacBook pro.
Is there any reason to hold off? Any upgrades on the summer horizon? (prior to mid-July...need to get acclimated before college).

If Apple hasn't started their student rebate program and you're going into college, wait for that program to begin. Chances are you'll get a free iPod of some sort with the laptop, and all you need is a valid student # at a real university/college.

I've got most of that taken care of; free iPod touch (well...I'm going to get the 16gb one for 100 dollars or the 32 for 200, have yet to decide). I was just wondering if there would be any new Macbooks.
Right. I'm making a backup and then reinstalling to see if that does something to my wonky iSight + some preferences reset to default whenever I reboot. If not, it's off to service.

I am going to die waiting for the hardware updates, seriously. I'm so close that I can taste my first new computer in seven years and Jobs still hasn't told us anything about updates.
I think I am going to scream. You're giving him sound advice, but damn if I'm not gonna whine anyway, because I can.
Edit: Also, @Echo, I thought you had already sent it in for service. You got that MacBook ages ago, why haven't you got the iSight fixed yet?
Hey guys, (hopefully) quick question: Can you get the current iPhone without the data plan.
I'll elaborate, two weeks ago my fiance signed up with AT&T for the lowest $40 a month plan using the standard free phone. She was interested in the new iPhone, and planned to return her current phone within the 30 days and buy the $200 one. Well, it won't be out in that timeframe, and the fact that she would need a data plan soured her on it.
Flash forward to today, my friend is selling off his 8GB iPhone, it's essentially brand new, just got it replaced by Applecare last night. So she bought it for $200, and she has her SIM card with $40 plan. Only hurdle now is to activate the iPhone, but it seems you need to tack on a data plan. Now, I know people have the iPhone sans data plan, I know it's possible, I'm wondering the best route to take to do it. We don't want it unlocked or jailbroken, it's not necessary. She called AT&T and the idiot on the phone was unknowledgable,a nd unhelpful, and said it could not be done, even if she signed up for the data plan and later wanted to remove only the data plan, her whole contract would be cancelled. I'm pretty sure this is bullshit.
She's going to an AT&T store tomorrow to see if they can activate it there. Again, she already has a 2 year contract, and a $40 plan, and a SIM card, plus the iPhone. The last piece of the puzzle is to get the iPhone activated. What is the next best option if they won't do it at the store? Thanks.
AFAIK, you can put the iPhone on any plan you want. It's just hamstrung if you don't take the data plan.
In fact, the sales clerk should be falling over themselves to sell it to you sans data plan, because then they can charge you astronomical data rates for it.

you CANNOT get the iPhone without the data contract.
20 bucks for a 1st gen, 30-45 bucks for the 3G one.
This is unavoidable at activation, since many features rely on it (like visual voicemail). Maybe you can call AT&T up after activation and cancel it, but AFAIK, you are stuck with it.

How does the GPS stuff get paid for? Is it included in data rates or do you just pay a one-off with GPS devices and then it's free to use after that? I've got a friend who is going to america this summer and is toying with buying the new iPhone but isn't sure if he's going to get completely raped if he actually uses it over there. I figure he's going to get charged for data because he's going to be using google maps, but will there be a separate charge for using the GPS on top of that?

GPS is free. It's beamed around the world by the US military. There is nothing or no-one you can pay.
Lewis is right, halfway. A lot of phones don't have the actual satellite antenna and you have to buy an accessory, then pay a monthly fee to use the gps service because the phone companies use a triangulation deal to approximate where you are in relation to their cell towers. iphone has an actual satellite antenna built-in, plus it supplements that with the cell tower data. In my research, you don't have to pay extra for it, which is why I'm waiting for the 3G instead of getting a blackberry now.
I used to use free Nokia software for GPS on my windows mobile phone, no subscription and it worked even when the cellular radio was turned off (i.e. GPS only).

I'm guessing that might not be so much though because it'll only go 'online' when new map data is requested not for as long as google maps is open?
Yes and maybe.
