That reinstall fixed the preferences being reset to default on reboot. Camera appears to be working, but I'll wait and see on that.

Haven't kept up over the last few pages, but the lack of basic 200 text messages in the 3g iPhone plan confirmed by Engadget in a short QA thing.
What's up with the data and SMS pricing?

Well, Apple will be in 70 countries (and counting) this year, so you'll get different plans from region to region. But in the US, users will have to sign up for a minute plan that includes an extra $30 rate for 3G data access (and has no bundled text messages). This is $10 more than the original iPhone's rate plan, which was $20 for data and 200 included SMSs. Matching voice plans start at $40 per month, so you'll basically be able to get started at $70 per month. (We've also got a bit more on AT&T's new plans here.)

Crazy. In the UK, they've actually introduced a cheaper plan (£5 cheaper, fewer free calls and text messages but still some and the data is still free on all packages) plus you can even put it on a pay-as-you go contract now as well, although I'm not sure what the deals are for that (I can't believe that data would be free on pay-as-you-go otherwise it's just begging for someone to put a voip application on it).

I mean, with current exchange rates, we're still paying about twice as much as a US customer, but that's sorta relative really isn't it.

I'd imagine it would cost you more in parts, time, and effort than your iBook is worth.

That being said, it's less than a simple process, but I don't know how much experience you have doing that sort of thing.

I dunno about DIY, but Apple charged a friend of mine about half of what he payed for his Macbook to get the screen replaced. For that price you could pick up a nice used PowerBook G4 or (possibly) a used lower end MacBook.

yeah, if i sent it to apple for repairs it was going to be $700 plus installation. on ebay used ibook screens are only about 100 dollars. I figure i'll keep the ibook running for a while and save up for a new macbook or macbook pro later on this year when they do a refresh

I work at a Canadian music/dvd chain, and my manager says the reason our iPod stock has not been replenished recently is that Apple is announcing new models at the end of the month. I've done some searching online and can't find anything about new models. Has anyone heard anything? Wouldn't the conference have been the time to announce something like that?

    no.

The conference was for developers, not consumers. The iPhone was announced then because it is a brand new development platform, and one of the core pillars of apple software development now.

The new iPods can be announced at any time.

Meh, doesn't hurt me. I was getting unlimited texts anyway. I've been paying BlackBerry rape fees for the last 20 months, every month. This is coming in line with BlackBerry pricing across companies. I guess I'm just not that outraged about it.

As a side note, am I the only one that has ever had a cell phone or dealt with cell phone companies before? I've been with every major carrier in the US (as well as one regional carrier about 11 years ago) and all of this stuff is nothing new: more expensive plans and subsidized phones. What about Apple being involved really made people think this was going to be any different?

The day I started talking to people who lived in Europe online was the day I came to the realization that most of the damn world has already stopped using AIM. I really don't like that protocol at all. I wish there was some way just to have everyone use something besides AOL's client.

MSN is a pretty shitty protocol too. Can't send messages to offline contacts (well, some clients are smart enough to keep it queued until the person is online again, but that's far from the same thing) and file transfers are incredibly hit and miss -- like when I get 4k/s on some random file when I can just upload it to his FTP at 2 megs/second.

They finally added offline messaging recently.

MSN is pretty much the only protocol people use here, so it kind of sucks that Adium isn't great with it. No video chatting and no offline messaging either :(

Regions chose their chat protocols on the lowest common denominator.

AOL was huge in the US, so people went with AIM. Never really blew up anywhere else.
MSN came with every Windows machine, and without AIM, the Europeans gravitated towards MSN as it was so prevalent.

ICQ is when you know dude is hardcore, because he was using it in the Golden Age of the Internet (mid 90's... remember when people still used Netiquette?). I still remember my 7-digit ICQ number (which I thought was pretty low and thus makes me cool) but I'm buggered if I remember the password.

I can agree here. I took these damn things apart for a living. You are better off buying a used (functioning) iBook again or maybe a defect one with a logic board failure which is sometimes offered on online auction sites - and strip the screen from there. Ordering new replacement parts most likely costs more then a used iBook - including the chance, that you mess up and it won't run again. (please don't be offended here, I have no overview of your abilities - heck, you could be 100 times better than me)

    Regarding the keynote:

There was the developer which created the music application for the jailbroken firmware. Is it just me or is the other Apple guy which introduces him - making fun of him. (it might be my lack regarding knowledge of English language). There was a sentence which sounded like "...what even low developers could accomplish with the SDK...". Sounds more like Steve handed a hobo the SDK and was surprised to find a working iPhone application on the HD.

I think he's referencing the fact that you don't even need to be a full time developer or work for a development studio to make good stuff for the iPhone.

The guy who made that music program worked full time in the insurance industry and he just picked up the SDK and went to town.

Why do they have you taking apart the whole computer when you could just replace the lcd screen by taking off the back cover of the screen. There's no need to take the whole damn sub-assembly off the thing. This way seems a hell of a lot easier.

Would make a good point in the keynote. "Look, we are lovering the price of the iPhone, but you are getting screwed by the plan's prices even more."

Its like these Pizza vendors in france. No, you aren't getting a Pizza free, you are actually buying two. (Of course you can decide to take one, but you still have to pay for two).

The Gecko engine (which does the rendering) is a non-native window element, and FF itself is Carbon. The Carbon libraries were introduced as a stepping stone to go from OS 9, which used C++ as it's programming language, whereas OS X uses Objective-C, and has the Cocoa libraries to use instead. I'm not sure if the smooth-scrolling is a property of the Gecko view, or the Carbon base of FF.

Firefox, because it is multi-platform, might well never work "right" because they can't just code it all in Objective-C for one platform. Camino attempted to do this before FF was ever announced (FF was originally not going to go to Mac OS X, that was the niche that Camino was already filling).

However, Apple will discontinue Carbon in the next five years or so, so what happens to Firefox is anyone's guess. Adobe have basically been served with notice to get Photoshop et al converted to Cocoa or get out. Even longtime Carbon user Microsoft has released Office in Cocoa. The only players of worth using Carbon are Adobe and Mozilla.

I recently discovered that Wine works on OSX and have run into a slight problem. I installed Wine using the instructions found here (I used the Macports method). I've used Wine in Linux on Kubuntu for years so it wasn't to daunting and the install process what fairly smooth.

Now that I've got everything set up I have to use the command line whenever I want to launch an application. To decrease the annoyance I did create this shell script:
    #!/bin/sh

    open /Applications/Utilities/X11.app
    cd ~/program directory
    wine program.exe

Not being all that good with this kind of thing my script ends up having three problems:

    1. An XTerm window is opened if X11 isn't already running
    2. A terminal window is opened which does not close when the program is finished
    3. I have to make a script for every exe I want to use

Problems 1 and 2 aren't that big of a deal but are still annoying and clutter my screen. 3 isn't to bad as there aren't many windows programs I run at all.

So how can I create a shortcur (ahem or 'Alias') to launch a program without any clutter?

Have you had a look at Darwine? It won't solve your clutter problem (in fact, it will probably make it a bit worse. You might be able to fix this, but I haven't looked into it), but it will mean you can just double click an app and have it open, rather than have to write a script and execute it from the terminal.

I always thought there was an option to say "don't open up a new xterm window when X11 opens", but I can't seem to find it at the moment...

as for your script, perhaps something like this would help.
    #!/bin/sh

    open /Applications/Utilities/X11.app
    cd ~/program directory
    wine $1

So you should be able to just type: ./Script.sh /path/to/app.exe
