Mac Thread - G3 phone thing is out. Have you heard of it?

The transparent menu bar can be turned off somewhere in Sys Prefs, though I forget where.
Even though you just upgraded, you may want to try rebuilding the Spotlight index. That sounds pretty wonky. Also remember it starts to search immediately, so "ica" would yield a different result compared to "ical", it might just take a second to catch up.
So with my 2nd generation iPod the battery only held about an hour of charge when i threw in the towel and upgraded to a 5th generation (As soon as they came out)... Now my 5th generation seems to last anywhere between 20mins - 3 hours after a full charge. Is there anything i can do to rectify this charge holding problem? short of getting a new battery/iPod?
As far as I know, the 'nanoBook' is just a collection of mac fanboys wet dreams. I believe it stared up before the Air came out, when going to the macrumor forums was nothing but threads and threads of artist mockups of what they thought was being debuted.
i've got a last gen 20" imac, 2 gig ram 2ghz core duo.
radeon x1600 256 MB card.
i want a new imac. i want the 24, 2.8ghz, upgraded to the nvidia 512 card.
think i can get 1000USD out of this current imac? it's got full registered versions of parallels, crossover and microsoft office as well.
someone please give me a blessing to drop all this money. haha.
I tried to move that same exact system about a month ago, which was before this iMac bump last week. www.macofalltrades.com would have given me $700, which has probably come down now. eBay didn't fair much better. Selling locally yielded offers from $6-650. $1k is probably a bit north of what you'd actually get for it.
Macs don't hold their value as well anymore, though they still best PCs in that regard. Now that they've switched from PowerPC processors to Intels, the mystery behind the processor power is gone. It makes it easier for anyone to compare processor speeds and make buying decisions based on that simple comparison.
The NanoBook is "announced" to the exact same degree as the Loch Ness Monster is "confirmed to exist".

This.
It's a design mockup by someone not even related to Apple. If everything like this led to an Apple product within six months (hell, even two years) I don't think any of us would be buying anything.
Once in a while, maybe once a day or so, I'll open up Safari and the window location isn't the same as I keep resetting it to. It glues itself to the top of the screen, like it's remembering some old window location. The thing is, the way I lay out that Space, I've never had Safari that high on the screen.
Anyone every experience a similar issue?
I've heard good things about this drive, though I don't know if it works with a MBP. Does it take SATA 3.0Gbs?
I have my final project coming up in september for school, and it's developing a piece of software for an actual client. I've decided I'm gonna invest in a Macbook come August, since the thought of having to constantly transfer project files and database backups between school and my home iMac every day makes me gag. :P I can't get rid of my iMac (huge stack of pc games :P ), and if I'm keeping it around, I figure I should still make hefty use of it at home for everything besides this project.
I've only ever had one mac at a time, so I know nothing of the ease of synching/file transferring between them. Thanks in advance for any eggs of knowledge cracked over my head.
mm... look into .Mac to keep your Address Book, iCal, and folders synced up (I believe it should have 1gig of space for you to do that)... for e-mails... switch to IMAP if you're using POP and have your e-mails all stored on the server so it is in sync wherever you access it from (look up how to set up IMAP for your specific provider)... but it truly is a pain to maintain two computers full time.
It's a gigantic pain in the ass. The problem is, sync with anything sucks. .Mac gets a lot of hate for no good reason, it's not like anyone has a perfect syncing solution anywhere to begin with. .Mac does a good enough job for me. The only annoying thing is when more than 5% of a category changes (say, you delete 10 bookmarks) it prompts you to accept the sync. This is annoying as shit sometimes, and can lead to some changes just not happening. I've had to delete bookmarks more than once before, but that's a minor annoyance I guess.
In an almost related issue I had a couple of apps that I had deleted that were still showing up in the .mac sync preferences. It annoyed me. I had to delete the sync services database and have OS X rebuild it to get rid of them.
In the three years I've had .mac that was the only issue I ever had with sync. Its nice having my calendars and bookmarks synchronized.
also, is there a better way to turn off the scrolling action on long bookmark lists and get it to open new "panes" like opera and firefox(?) does?
took out her barrettes and her hair spilled out like rootbeer
I think, for the majority of the multiple Mac owners, it resides in compartmentalising what you do: laptop for work, desktop for home. That sort of thing. Synchronisation is a big pain; even Mac evangelists like John Gruber don't try to. If you telecommute, like a Blogger or student, having a powerful laptop is usually the purported "solution".
Check out the thread on dropbox. It's still in private beta, but it looks ridiculously awesome for syncing/managing files over multiple computers. Come August/September, they'll probably have at least an open beta.

A Glass, Darkly
I am, of course, completely fucking fed up with it by now, as you can probably imagine. I'll be earning a boatload of cash this summer and I'm gonna splurge on a MacBook Pro, specced to the max (TO THE MAXXXXXXXXX). It'll be your standard 15-inch, 2.6GHz, 4GB RAM, GeForce 8600M GT (512MB) monster. Non-glossy screen (ahahaha ew), of course.
I'm looking forward to Leopard, having used OSX since it felt like it was just an experiment (it was installed on a partition on this machine when I got it, the other half used OS9--oh wow it was strange back then. strange but glorious).
I guess I don't really have any questions apart from whether or not anyone knows if it's gonna get any juicy stuff done to it before like August that I should know about. I'm thinking something might be unveiled at the WWDC, but I have a habit of forgetting about stuff like that until the last minute. Any clues?
I mean, I'm not looking to buy one, but that seems pretty long for Apple to not really change anything (design wise)
Design wise I doubt they're going to be changing much, if anything. I would expect hardware bump at WWDC.
Well rumour has it that there will be a significant upgrade (redesign) over the summer or in time for Christmas. But you know. Who knows?
Thanks for the clearing this up for my everyone. Much appreciated. I think I may give that last sentence of yours a try Lewisham. Put my iMac up for like 500 bucks, see if I can unload it, and then put that 500 towards getting a entry level Macbook Pro, instead of the top-end Macbook like I was originally planning. Here's hopin' anyways. :^:
The G5 towers had two revisions, going from air cooled to liquid cooled for the last models... The Mac Pro is completely different inside then the G5 (And outside, they moved ports around added another slot for a cd)
Two nitpicks about the Mac Pro : You now need a screwdriver to install drives and you loose the apple display connector - which is more an overall move towards industry standards but i really miss the monitor only having one cable for signal and power.
Reasons the Mac Pro is better: 4 drive bays finally stock (you could easily add more to a G5 with aftermarket kit) two more internal SATA connectors if you know where to look, two cd bays
To be honest, I don't think you can mass-change icons in the way you're describing, I think you'll have to do each one manually.
Last fall, I'd been under the impression that a big MBP revision was going to happen in January, which didn't happen, then that it would happen in the spring, which was just a speedbump. After that speedbump I gave in and ordered a clearance previous-rev. one to replace my G4.
Unfortunately I found the new MBP had an unacceptably uneven backlight, which I RMA'd and then was told it was out of stock so they gave me my money back. I was about to re-order it (since the site inexplicably said it was still in stock) but by then it was about six weeks until WWDC, and I ultimately decided to just wait it out one more time.
Just once more.
This is about the most recent bit that sounds convincing. Although I don't really care about that and still want to pick up a clearance, just a clearance with the multi-touch trackpad.

Really? Oh well... Thanks anywho.
A desktop 1.25 GHz G4, 512 RAM, ATI 9000 Pro.
and
An Aluminum Powerbook 1 GHz G4, 1 GB RAM.
I've wiped the hard drives and am going to sell them on craigslist (and if they don't move, eBay) as-is. The desktop is in mint condition, however the Powerbook has seen a lot of wear and tear: the keyboard no longer works (have to use a USB keyboard/mouse), the sounds doesn't either and I think the superdrive can no longer burn discs, although it can read them.
I checked out that Mactrade website but I don't think they have either of these listed.
How much do you think I should sell them for? Since I got them for free I don't really mind what the price point is.
And the AlBook? Hmm, maybe 50 or so, as it's basically spares now.
PPC Macs have a lost a lot of money since the switch to Leo.
*Based in the UK? I'm seriously looking for an iMac for my Mum, so this is a real offer.
e: But watch out because those magnetic dealies are easy to detach by accident.
Yeah, it's a Powermac. The one with the shiny front.
I was thinking about $50 for the Powerbook and $100-$200 for the Powermac.
This is of course in American Funbux, an almost worthless currency not even comparable to the pound.
