That Videogaiden review is what made me go out and purchase God Hand. I was surprised to find brand new copies at the local Best Buy - it must still be selling fairly well to be doing this so long after release. 'Cult hit' indeed!
And the Videogaiden dudes are definitely Scottish. I wish I were Scottish... >.<

I let that IGN review stop me from buying this game when it first came out.
I knew not what evil they had wrought!
Seriously, I need to get this. Any game reminiscent of early 90s brawlers = win.
It's okay. You have realized your mistake and are attempting to correct it. That is the most important thing. Because of this, you shall be rewarded with so much face punching that you won't know what to do. It is the best problem one could ever face.
Also I am very disappointed in the mod who changed the thread title. Clearly they do not understand the amazingness of God Hand. Also it was just a joke jeeze, no need to get all thread title change-y on it.
This game is 10 shades of fucking spectacular game play. It's one of the only games where I've made a conscious decision to try and get better.
Why has no one talked about the customization? You can play Gene as a boxer, a drunken boxer, an all leg using guy, etc. etc. Different builds I'm sure are better, but I loved playing him as a straight puncher.
I still can't figure out which Clover Beat 'em Up I prefer.
I mean there is this game, with it's obvious merits.
Then there's the original Viewtiful Joe which is just about everything you'd ever want from a 2D Beat 'em up.
I've been thinking of picking God Hand up, but I really didn't like Viewtiful Joe. How different are they? Viewtiful Joe looked great and pulled off the cheesy kung-fu movie vibe well, but the gameplay didn't click with me. For the record, I don't mind tank controls at all.

Very different.

The extent of puzzle solving in God Hand is either:
- kill all the enemies in each area to open the door
- push the rocks into position to open the door
- light the torches to open the door
So none of the business with trying to figure out what to do in the current level. Either you are punching somebody in the face, or you are en-route to punching somebody in the face but that route will likely involve punching somebody or something in the face.

After reading this thread and searching around the netscape a bit, I've decided to go ahead and pick up God Hand off Amazon (yeah, 3.99 overnight shipping).
I haven't had a game that's really given me a ball-busting challenge in quite awhile, here's hoping that Clover's little gem does the job.

Personally, I can't think of a single level in God Hand that wasn't challenging besides the few joke levels thrown in just for laughs. Just remember that the better you play, the harder every enemy will be. If you're on level Die, you're going to be facing enemies that can potentially kill you in one combo. That's why you must stay calm, break their guard, and then punch them in the face.

Part of God Hand's brilliance is that it actually gets the concept of Difficulty right. It is not difficult because the AI cheats or rubberbands, or because you only have one try to beat an entire level or else restart completely, or any other "artificial" difficulty enhancements. It is hard and loses nothing from it because every mistake you make is your own damn fault. Entirely. You could have done something better, and a glitch or an enemy being cheap had nothing to do with it.
Also because it's just a game about punching people.
Hands down one of the best straight-up action games ever made, if not the.
Yes! I have been waiting for another God Hand thread to appear
I owe you guys big - I wouldn't have ever noticed this game if it weren't for the rabid fanbase here on this forum. Picked it up last week for a whopping $15 (totally mint condition too - someone obviously played it for a day, got frustrated, and traded it back in. It SO lived up to the hype!
I attempted to play through on Normal at first, and somehow made it all the way to the Devilhand fight, before getting completely schooled so many times that I had to start again on Easy. Well, even Easy is a bit of a misnomer - you still have to put an honest effort into it or there's a lot of face-punching to receive!
The Poison Chihuahua races are solid-gold (and I made a freakin' mint off of "Whips n Chains" on some lovely 18:1 odds), the punching people into orbit thing puts a smile on my face, and it was genuinely funny - I loved the master sensei tripping through the door. Oh, and where Gene launches everyone through an open window one-by-one, and then motions to the last one to step to the side so he can meet the same fate (and he happily obliges) - GOLD!
Also, somone needs to post a link to the credits song, stat!! "Don't act like you don't like the Ball Buster! Ball Buster!!"
I'm going to make another effort to play through on Normal and get horribly pummeled into oblivion in the near future. But it'll be worth it!
I don't want to link to the end credits song because it's so much better when you earn it yourself. If people are really curious though they can just look it up on youtube.
Also since I beat normal I'm going through on easy for a Kick Me Sign run and I still get screwed up every once in a while. Freaking demons, I always used to just God Hand through them. Now I have to actually use strategy. However I must say I'm proud of myself for beating the Conchita gang in stage 2 without getting hit up until the end because I got cocky and tried to win with a Fist of Justice.
Ninja Gaiden could learn a lot from God Hand. See, this is how you do difficult games right. I think the level length is my favourite aspect of God Hand, they make it short enough that there might only be a handful of encounters in the level but every single one is a unique and meaningful challenge.
This game is just so... wow, I really don't think I'm worthy of talking about it; it's just so damn awesome. Devilhand is currently kicking my ass all over the fucking place.
Here's a question for you, good chaps:
What combo are you using by the end of the game? (sans the ultra-expensive ones on future replays)
My memory's a little fuzzy, but I think mine was...
Left jab 3 => right hook 3 (quick attacks to get the party rolling)
2 of the multi-hit combo attacks (Floating Butterfly and that one that's an upgrade of Super Gene)
That one sobat that breaks guard (spinning sobat?)
A strong kick move for heavy damage
One-two Punch to finish (break guard again and then launch with heavy damage)
And then I made triangle that one ridulous unblockable launch move that takes a second to charge up - I used it as a fun means of crowd control ;-)
I need recommendations for building a better combo. Mine was working pretty well but I couldn't help thinking that it could be better.
I also owe thanks to this forum for making sure I bought and enjoyed this game. I, for the most part, loathe fighting games. Streetfighter has never once caught my interest. Mortal Combat? Nuttin.
But this one?
It's got char-ah-sma! I do so love it so. I think I first heard about it on X-Play (I know, I know) and noted the ability to punch people into orbit with glee. But I didn't pick it up then. My life was dull and listless. Then I happened upon these forums, and lo I was converted! Now I have a girlfriend and life is looking up.
Coincidence!?
Better living through punching people in the face.

And if ye cannae dig that... I'll punch ye.
I had fun with it, but it's not quite my favorite action/beat'em up/kill everything in sight game.
Maybe one day I'll be able to sell people on it with the same passion the God Hand community possess.
At least I was able to finish it. Not sure if I'll ever have the will to go through it again on Level Die.

I actually am somewhat interested in seeing the X-Play review but I couldn't find it on youtube and I'll be damned if I'm getting G4TV anywhere in my internet history if it's not a direct link to the review. I heard they gave it a 4/5 which is actually surprising. I figured they'd be on the "Repetitive levels, awkward controls" camp and give the game a 2.
To the guy who said that PS2 games suck on a big screen HDTV: Get the component cables you mook.
I have component cables.

I bought this game two weeks ago and am playing it now. I love how it gets right to the point. The game is about beating the shit out of as many people as possible. That's it.
I still can't figure out which Clover Beat 'em Up I prefer.

Good to know. I'm drunk, and I routinely spend money I don't have when I'm drunk, so I'm going to order this.
Thanks to this thread I decided to buy God Hand for $20 at work. I already almost beat it, but I don't want to rent it again. Seems like Ninja Gaiden where even if I beat it and get really good, going back and wreaking some havoc will be great fun. A game to buy.
Also, Viewtiful Joe isn't calculated. It's pussified. I expected so much more from that game, but was dissapointed after stage 3 or 4. Repetitive and meh.
Nothing beats a full combo of drunken kung fu...not terribly powerful but spammable and a godsend for the second-to-last boss.
As for Viewtiful Joe, it's basically the full apotheosis of the 2D action-platformer, which means it retains many annoying features as well. I give the edge to God Hand for being a bit more flexible (custom difficulty and custom combos help a lot) and having a goofier, more self-aware sense of humor. Both are great, though, and VJ definitely can be found for less money than dinner at a restaurant.
So thanks to this thread I have finally ordered a copy of God Hand. You better not have led me astray G & T. Although everything that I've seen of this game has convinced me that I will love it. Dammit, I already have a shitload of games that I need to play/finish, but somehow I get the feeling that this will take precedence over all of them.
Edit:
TeeMan look up a store called DVDCrave. I just ordered God Hand (New) with Express Post delivery for AU$30! They're a good store I've used them plenty of times in the past. They only have about half a dozen copies left though according to the site. So grab it while you can.

My end game combo is usually jab3, straight 3, floating butterfly, uppercut 3.
x is always the latest high kick. It always will be. Until the end of time itself, whereupon the good lord will deliver his judgement onto the heathens, oh yeah! Amen.
Up and triangle used to be yes maam but I'm trying to wean myself off that crutch it so it's usually a forearm smash/chi palm type move now. Either that or the latest charge punch launcher. I mix it up depending on the level/situation.
Back and x is either drunken twist if I feel cheap as shit, or step back kick if I want evasion with a bit of skill.
Triangle is usually reverse sweep (so that hitting triangle always does a sweep since you get one off updodge which I use a ton to cancel moves), but lately I've been putting mach punch 1/2 there for after a guard break and using the default sweep command instead. Down and square is guard break.
I usually do jab, straight, guardbreak, updodge/sidestep/backflip, punish opponents counter attack/try again.
For certain characters I do machpunch, guardbreak, backflip/sidestep repeat. Good on women.
