STORY: In the early part of 1950's in the USA, a game called "Violence Fight" was in vogue among Mafia, reckless drivers and general businessmen.

The "Violence Fight" was the game to struggle for "no. 1 quarreller" with fighters who were gathered from all parts of the USA speaking boastingly of their strength.

And of course a lot of winning money as well as the honor were given to the "winner"

Here in downtown L.A., a young fighter "Bat" and his manager "Blinks" seek for the winning money eagerly.

As a matter of fact, can bad take the no. 1 place of the USA?

Ending spoilers -
You won all fight. And obtained not only money and peace but also glory.

And at the same time, you defeated your younger brother and knew cruelty and vanity of violence
:(

Me and my housemates just discovered this forgotten gem on Taito Legends 2, it is a really great 2D fighter (although it also has vertical movement). It has projectiles, crowd interaction, a range of levels, a bonus level where you fight a tiger, a great storyline, and all in a game made in 1989. Pretty ahead of it's time.

One of the funny things about it are all the glaring mistakes throughout the game -

It was made in 1989. It is set in the 1950's. One of the levels has the New York skyline as a backdrop, and it shows the World Trade Centre (Twin Towers), but not the Empire State Building. The Empire State Building was built in 1931. The World Trade Centre was built in 1966. This game was made in 1989. It is set in the 1950's.

If you are playing the single player mode, and win one round (it's first to 2) of a fight, then draw the second one, it's game over.

The translation is well into the "So bad it's good" territory.

Taito Legends 2 is well worth getting, especially if you are a shmup fan (Gekirindan/Darius Gaiden/RayForce), but everyone should play this game at least once. Preferably with a big group of mates, and some alcohol.

I like how it starts with the vertical movement like a beat 'em up and then the second level is strictly 2D fighter.

Ha! I remember playing this game in the arcade. Kind of felt like a cartoony version of Pit Fighter. Also, you gotta respect a game with a fighter named "Lick Joe."

Holy crap, this game looks hilarious and fun.

I bought Taito Legends 2 specifically for Gekirindan/Darius Gaiden/RayForce, and really only played those, the other shmups, and a few other random games. Didn't really dig into this one though.

But now that I've seen it, I'm gonna give it a shot!

Yeah, the best part is the WTC being in the background of one of the stages. Pretty inconsistent settings, too. But giant pipes for the win...

Make sure you check out "Growl" a scrolling beat em up where - "In the early years of the 20th century, a greedy, evil gang of poachers was hunting animals to the point of extinction. Groups of rangers were founded in order to fight off these poachers and save the animals."

Also "Cameltry" it's basically a whole game of the bonus levels from Sonic 1 (and iirc it came out before Sonic 1 did).

Oh god. I have that comp. I tried violence fight for like 5 minutes aaaand.... never played it again. Even though it was kind of hilarious. Does it not suck as bad as I remembered it? I have to say there's some bad shit on that taito comp.

    Arabian Magic anyone?

    No, it does absolutely suck.

In the same way that Evil Dead sucks.

In that is is utterly superb, despite being absolutely awful.

    SAMMY YOU!!

There's a great old review of Violence Fight here. The best part:

"I don't know if this guy is supposed to be a Jamaican or an American Indian or some sort of weird hybrid or what. I mean, he sure looks black to me, but then you've got this weird war paint and the "Fierce Eagle" thing. And if Violence Fight takes place in the early fifties, just when was the guy in Marines? When he was twelve? I really shouldn't let this get to me."

I think the first Taito Legends had more A-material, but the second one's fun too.

Here's a review of Growl I wrote up a while ago.
