Badly reviewed but awesome games

I just got the universally panned "Conan" for the 360 on the cheap and I'm really really really enjoying it. I mean I knew that everyone said it sucked, but dammit, it's awesome.

I think it's ultimately that after a long hard day at the office, a man just wants to cut fifteen guys in half and see some titties.

So, bearing in mind that reviewers are sometimes useful but are also sometimes giant wankers, what are other people's guilty gaming pleasures?

Overlord gets my pick, and ironically it got about the same average score as Conan.

Also, my local rental store is selling an ex rental of god hand for pennies, should i pick it up?

I seem to recall PN03 on the Gamecube receiving a lot of bad to mediocre reviews despite it's awesomeness. It's a little repetitive and the environments are fairly boring but it's quite fun, anyway.

Hey, I try not to. But like it or not, reviews affect both how people see a game before they buy it and also whether or not stores even carry it. On the plus side, a shoddily reviewed game is cheap fast, so there's that.

I don't think any of those games are really reviewed badly. It's just the quality of an average game is a lot higher than people think.

I think Legend of Mana was probably the most brilliant games that came out for the PS1, but if I remember correctly it got pretty decent scores, but it received a lot of undeserved hate from the gaming community because of how dissimilar is was to the other Mana games.

You know, kinda like Chrono Cross.

No, Chrono Cross pretty much sucked.

    Music was faaaabulous though.

My game of choice though: Way of the Samurai. I don't even know why I liked it, but the simple story with the ways it could play out...it was fun times, despite the brutal system relating to character death.

PN03 was already mentioned, so I can't contribute anything wondrous to this thread. However, I will also say that the art from the game makes for EXCELLENT desktop wallpaper.
    Desktop.jpg

But I guess I can sound off about a few other games that I don't champion quite as hard as PN03.

None of these were panned, per se, but they recieved generally middlin' reviews and didn't see much in the way of sales.

Gladius, by Lucasarts, was an incredible Turn-based strategy game that managed to combine a whole slew of mythologies and intriguing weapons and tactics into a cohesive whole. Not only that, but there was an additional skill element introduced into the game in the form of the swing bar. This caused your characters to have hit and damage effects that were controlled more by the player than just by their stats. This changed things up and really kept you involved throughout the whole game. Granted that by the end it gets a little annoying because it seems every other enemy has a sword that can instantly kill you just as a side effect, but still. The game is awesome.

Geist, by N-space, as a really interesting take on the FPS, in that the player was constantly taking over enemies and using their weapons. The game was forever in development and even Miyamoto's help couldn't quite bring it up to par with other titles, but the multiplayer was actually really interesting and the story was compelling without being cheesy or convoluted. The entire sequence where you take over a female scientist and turn her into Ripley from Aliens over the course of about four hours (the longest posession in the game by far) was unbelievable in its awesome.

Other Gamecube titles I enjoyed include Evolution Worlds (similar to Azure Dreams and TimeStalkers), Odama (one-of-a-kind feudal Japanese military strategy Pinball simulator), The Hobbit (Zelda ripoff from Sierra, quite entertaining), Custom Robo, Megaman Network Transmission, Kirby Air Ride, Vexx, and both Lost Kingdoms titles.

I could go into other system, but I'm sure other people will cover them for me.

Even though I know that's probably correct, I still find it hard to believe when looking at the game itself. How the hell is that not something completely seperate with a few names and an arbitrary final boss shoehorned in?

Dark Messiah got mixed reviews. 90s from Game Informer and like 60 from 1up. 1up hates fun, I guess.

    Anyway, mediocre meta-review.

My favourite game from 2006. Really, its more fun to chop and slice, and backstab in that game that pretty much anything. Good graphics and distinctive levels, too.

No, the final boss makes sense. It's not just some Necron or Zeromus type of situation, you just weren't paying attention.

Also CT is basically a game with what, 2 or 3 different scenario writers? Well, the one who did my favorite part of CT went on and did CC.

Dark Messiah is really great. It's a fantasy game, with brilliant melee combat, halflife style set pieces and some cool RPG-lite aspects. The graphics aren't that great for the most part, but it does have it's moments.

The story is a bit lightweight, and the illusion of choice is really thinly masked.

It's a great, unique game that everyone should playthrough at least once, and it gets me really stoked for "The Crossing".

    The soundtrack is great too.

I love ToS's story, and I fall into the camp that believes the story is intentionally very cliched, otherwise known as camp sucker, as all Tales games have these silly plots involving racism or crazy churches or both and ToS is no exception.

It would probably have been my favorite RPG last generation if only the skits were voiced and the OP left in.

Instead that honor goes to BKO or FFX or BoF: DQ or Paper Mario:TTYD.

Hey speaking about that we get two more good nominations for this thread.

BoF: DQ is an odd game, but a really fantastic one if you get it. Or if it gets you, as I should say. Not universally understood.

BK: O came so late that anyone who reviewed it probably put it up against FF XII and thought it to be just a rehash of BK with the same problems. BK: O happens to have fixed most of the problems of BK and continues the same rich and inviting story of BK, or rather starts it as the case may be.
