Freshly spawned crits are a smack in the face, and I'm still coming to terms with the fact that the system revolves around improving the combat effectiveness of steamrolling teams by giving them improved critical thresholds.
But at the same time I friggin' love dishing the things out. So thar.
Personally, I love crits. Whether I'm dishing them out as a Heavy, my Chaingun suddenly spewing out hideously dangerous firepower, or whether I'm on the receiving end of a glowing blue Stickie or Rocket doesn't matter: it just adds to the beautiful chaos that is a match of Team Fortress 2.
Crits are better coming from an engineers shotgun and killing things before they can get to your sentry.
Or critical wrench, your choice.
Crit melee is the best as it sends the ragdoll FLYING!
I actully dont mind be on the reciving end of those as I get to see how far across the map I go.
My stats look so messed up now after PASMO. Debating if I should reset them or not. Does resetting delete the total amount of hours played with each class or screw around with achievements at all?
I also feel underwhelmed with the Kritz that I got from tonight. Everytime I use it, I feel like I would of done better if I had a normal Uber.
So, do you guys have any tips on playing Spy? I just started playing other classes than medic, and find that when I am successful with the spy, I am having such a great time playing it despite scoring generally very, very low.
I've got some pointers for you:
1 Disguises aren't useful except for sentries, use them but don't trust them.
2 Corners are your best friends, always try to lose invisibility there because it lessens the chance of being seen.
3 If you go and stab a series of targets and miss one, run if he sees you!
4 Try sapping stuff and stabbing the engineers that repair it.
5 If you think you have been spotted but aren't sure, still run away and disguise again!
Thanks alot davincie. That helps alot. I am finding myself having some problems with stabbing in general. I am cloaked, standing at the back of an enemy, and pressing fire with the dagger - but nothing happens. He doesn't stab or attack at all. Do I have to decloak at the same time? Could be my mouse, which is really giving me a hard time at the moment.
Like Squidget0 said you have to decloak first, but I would advise not decloaking at the back of the enemies unless you know for sure there are no other enemies behind you. Sure you might stab the heavy or soldier you are behind, but that is just one kill. You should try to make them fear you. You should try to go in stab a medic and maybe a heavy and then go away again disrupting their attack. And as soon as they regroup again go back in!
I'm kind of a spy newb too but I like having this in my spy.cfg. It makes disguising so much easier:
//Half-Life_Maniac 21/9/2007
//Choose spy disguises using TF2 class numbers from numpad
//numpad 0 to toggle team
alias blue_scout "disguise 1 1"
alias blue_soldier "disguise 3 1"
alias blue_pyro "disguise 7 1"
alias blue_demoman "disguise 4 1"
alias blue_hwg "disguise 6 1"
alias blue_engineer "disguise 9 1"
alias blue_medic "disguise 5 1"
alias blue_sniper "disguise 2 1"
alias blue_spy "disguise 8 1"
alias red_scout "disguise 1 2"
alias red_soldier "disguise 3 2"
alias red_pyro "disguise 7 2"
alias red_demoman "disguise 4 2"
alias red_hwg "disguise 6 2"
alias red_engineer "disguise 9 2"
alias red_medic "disguise 5 2"
alias red_sniper "disguise 2 2"
alias red_spy "disguise 8 2"
alias blue "bind kp_ins red; bind kp_end blue_scout; bind kp_downarrow blue_soldier; bind kp_pgdn blue_pyro; bind kp_leftarrow blue_demoman; bind kp_5 blue_hwg; bind kp_rightarrow blue_engineer; bind kp_home blue_medic; bind kp_uparrow blue_sniper; bind kp_pgup blue_spy"
alias red "bind kp_ins blue; bind kp_end red_scout; bind kp_downarrow red_soldier; bind kp_pgdn red_pyro; bind kp_leftarrow red_demoman; bind kp_5 red_hwg; bind kp_rightarrow red_engineer; bind kp_home red_medic; bind kp_uparrow red_sniper; bind kp_pgup red_spy"
bind "kp_ins" blue
blue
Basically it binds the classes to the keypad numbers and keypad zero to switch between Red/Blue.
Another tip for spies, stay out of the way of any scouts you see this includes but allied and enemy scouts. This is kinda obvious but I have to say something to test out my new avatar
hes good, but damn... its kind of boring watching a heavy. Scouts and soldiers are much more fun to watch.
Watch a really really good medic who goes into danger and survives by the skin of his teeth when his compatriot dies time and time again. I reckon it would be full of "oh shit he's gonne bite it...what the hell? how did he do that, how is he still alive??" moments despite a lack of killing on the medics part.
There's some pretty neat medicing at about 3:30 in that vid, blocking the poor soldiers from running out of the FIERY HAIL OF DEATH.

Backstabbing then sapping is a great strategy too, granted the sentry is facing away from you because it'll have to do a 180 degree turn before it shoots you.
Sometimes it'll even kill the engineer if you don't do it fast enough.
I've been playing abit more now, think I got the basic idea - to pull it off isn't always as easy. Plus, some maps seem harder than others to pull of a good sneaky manouver, but that is to be expected I guess. Still, playing Spy now is just fun - I am not even close to being slightly good, but it's good fun.
Remember the match 12v12 PA vs. Evil Avatar is today!!!
Match is at 4PM (Eastern Time). Be online and in vent early if you are on the team. Source TV will be up and running for any spectators: It should be a great match!!!
Come and cheer on the Penny Arcade Team:!!:

Yea Spy actually used to be the class I only played. Got to the point of an obsession and a bunch of us PAers had to sit me down for a "chat" about my obsession. Wasn't healthy and wasn't easy, but with several miligrams of methadone injected into my spy-ass, I ended up getting sober and going straight to the demoman bottle.
I am the Champion of Pthah and I crack open the skulls of his enemies with this God-given wrench. I had a 2:1 k:d ratio and my sentrygun was dead 90% of the time.
I need a good engineer background now

I love playing in French pubs with friends; since they don't seem all that great and coordination between us two or three can work wonders. The only thing that beats this love in magnitude is how much I detest it when my friends leave.
There's a language barrier, sure, but there's things you just do. If I'm a heavy and you uber me and we're attacking a level 3 sg at mid range move towards it.
It's a bad sign when you're a soldier and you're the only one spy checking (we had two pyros) and the two or three spies on the other team are ruining all of our sgs.
Makes me wish I took French in school.
On the bright side I can kinda rocket jump half the time now! It's a nice feeling.

I'm starting to feel the urge of spy once again.
What made you lose you mind, though? You mean you basically just played the class to much or what? You think it's a frustrating class? :winky:

No I just played it so much that I was better at defending myself as spy than any other class. I'd even play it on defense and all throughout dustbowl, even the last point. I just fucking love spy, it was so much fun and so satisfying backstabbing a sniper or an annoying heavy to just run away after. Amazing.

I'm playing spy again now.
I wholeheartedly agree. The moments when you actually managed to take out the enemy, go into hiding and doing it all over again, that is pure awesome.
I'm a decent heavy, but for some reason Medics seem to forget I exist. I get plenty of kills without them, but I'd be a damn powerhouse if they'd actually stay on my ass. >:|

Believe it or not, a lot of people can be a powerhouse with a pet Medic. Unfortunately there's an entire team of other players getting hurt all the time.

I found a russian server the other day, with most of them on their mics. GOD IT WAS AWESOME.
Somehow "ARGH FUCK SPY KILLIT" translates into any language, and the guys playing heavies just cracked me up constantly. Words can't really explain the sheer brilliance of it.
Playing on a german server a different time, a sudden yell of "ACHTUNG! SPION!" almost made me wet myself. In my pants.

True, but I try to help out heavies more as a medic, since other classes can retreat alot of the time.

Do many heavies use 180 scripts like most everyone used in CS?
180 scripts are just a stupid idea. If you have the right sensitivity, you can whip around 180 manually with no problem. Plus you don't get the disorientation of suddenly seeing something entirely new, and your mousing space isn't screwed up. Also doing it manually allows any amount of quick turning, not just completely around.
I don't know of a single person that uses (or would use) that. My guess is that it's a fabrication of people who see other people do incredibly fast mouse movements. It's in the same category of the "script that bunnyhops for you."

Except for soldier, all my classes are actually higher than yours.
However, I do not play any one class nearly as much as you, and even then I probably would be no match against your soldier.
