360 DRM Solution (MSoft Replacements Only)

I just heard this on Major Nelson's podcast, so some one else may have already posted it up, but there are folks here who NEED this solution, and I'd prefer to err on the side of being too helpful.

So, anyway, for folks who had their 360 replaced by Microsoft, but can no longer play their old DLC on their replacement system off-line or on other accounts, apparently there IS a solution.

1) sign in to live with gamertag that originally purchasedthe content

2) go to marketplace

3) select account management

4) select download history

5) select content, and download again

According to Major Nelson and E, this grants a new lisence to the replacement system, allowing you to use the content offline and on other gamertags, just as though you had bought it on that console originally. I believe you have to download each item individually, but it beats not being able to have any of them at all.

Anyway, I hope that helps some one.

And now I'm not nearly as reluctant to turn good money into Microsoft points.

It would be great if some one could test and confirm this. Not that I don't trust the information, it's just that I can't test it myself, since I'm still on my first 360 (I know!) and confirmation is always great.

It doesn't work in every case, but it works for a lot of people. I still had to call them, and they fixed me up in a week or so, but I still had to do all of this.

This was one of my biggest concerns with getting a 360, although it wasn't going to turn me away, I am happy to know it (possibly? still not confirmed?) might be no longer as problem.

They did also mention possible future updates allowing something like this for non-MSoft replacements (as if, if you upgrade from a pro to an elite, or something) but the statement was entirely nebulous, so who knows if that'll ever really happen.

I should try this later on, I've had a few games that have been locked out through the process.

That's good news. I've been really hesitant to buy stuff off Live other than Rock Band DLC but some of the games on Live Arcade are a blast.

Let us know how well it works, and I'll edit it in to the OP.

It didn't work for the replacement 360 I got the first week of April, but I called MS and my content was finally relicensed today.

When I got my replacement I wasn't able to play anything I purchased offline, when I deleted and re downloaded my content (Arcade, maps, etc) it all worked offline without an issue and this was about 2 months ago.

This is like when an abusive spouse stops beating you. You're glad, but you kind of wish that they just hadn't smacked you around to begin with.
