The problem was that mutants were always convenient for creating throw away characters. That was fine back in the day when there weren't like 200+ active mutants we knew about, but at some point it got ridiculous, especially given the tendency towards resurrection. I still liked it when there were a lot more mutants, but I wasn't so wedded to the idea that I can't see the good in the new status quo either. Basically, either way is fine with me as long as there are good stories.

So instead of having a billion mutants running around, they depower them and create the Initiative, which pretty much replaces them with a billion superheroes. That makes sense.

comparing the Initiative to the former mutant population is ridiculous though

I'm talking about flooding the market with overpowered beings. It happened on the X-Men side, and they "fixed" it, just to let it happen on the Avengers side.

You never see these characters outside of the Initiative book, though.
On the other hand, turning "superhero" into a government job saps the wonder from things as much as the glut of mutants, so if that was chief among the reasons Quesada decided getting rid of the mutants was a good idea then this is a clear case of one step forward and two steps back.

The Initiative was only supposed to last 12 issues, wasn't it? Maybe it's just a case of we haven't seen them in other books yet. Other than cameo appearances, though, we haven't really seen much of Initiative teams outside of the book. I don't think the initiative will last much longer, though, given that the Skrulls are all over it and are placing members on every team throughout the country.

It was originally a miniseries, but got turned into an ongoing before it was launched. I'm sure it'll still be around post-Secret Invasion, but yeah, I think it'll be a bit different.
I don't think the Initiative will go away after SI. Depending if they de-criminalize un-registered heroes and just have the Initiative be purely voluntary although in some cases it already is.

wh
why are the young avengers back in their old costumes and oh fuck what's iron lad doing there
Someone could have been replaced during the last issue of Young Avengers, and it wouldn't really matter except for one issue of Young Avengers Presents containing a Skrull.

Actually if you follow the Initiative you'd see they don't have that many recruits anyway, hence the whole MVP cloning thing. In fact Tony has flat out said they don't have enough to actually have 1 team in all 50 states.

Everyone was worried about them de-criminalizing un-registered heroes after WWH. I don't think its going to happen. At least not for a while.
Got Ms. Marvel today. There was a whole lot of punching and energy blasting, and she stopped whining. That's basically it. Not a bad issue, but nothing really consequential happened besides a 22 page battle.

Maybe everyone gets loose free from the negative zone prison during SI.
Why do people think Marvel has to return to the former status quo on this?
Whenever the Earth's primary defense force, the superheroes, get completely dominated due to the Skrulls knowing exactly where every one of them are, and their various weaknesses, it really forces one to examine if the Initiative is a good idea. Not to mention that the Initiative has been seriously compromised already, first by the Hood, who used the information he gathered to track down, beat, and blackmail Tigra, then by the Skrulls that attempted to put "a Skrull in every state," and then by the Skrulls again in Who Do You Trust, when they used the registration database to track down and neutralize various teams.
Not to mention that the architect of the Initiative, Hank Pym, has been a Skrull this whole time, and has been acting to personally weaken the organization. The entire system's fucked from the bottom up.
I have no doubt that the Initiative will still be around post-SI, mainly because it's selling very well for a book starring C-list characters. But I think it'll be drastically changed.
Hasn't there been some indication that the Secret Invasion may not be all that bad a thing for Earth? I thought I read in some of the solicits that a lot of people are going to end up being on the Skrull's side due to the "renaissance" they're going to bring to the planet.

I highly, highly doubt that a non-powered species, unable to protect itself from a conquering race of absurdly deceptive shape-shifters with other powers plus super-tech, are going to fare well in the conquered world as anything but slave labor.

No no! We won't be slaves! Our abilities or lack thereof don't matter! Because he loves us!

Apparently paprika, sea salt, and thyme figure prominently into the Skrull philanthropic efforts.
