Welcome to the text and SS because my comp sucks too much ass to record video without lag let's play of Clive Barkers Undying.

This post will contain spoilers as of 5-9-08

In my opinion this is one of his best works, and it's a shame that there won't be a movie based around the story, as it's a good old fashioned haunted house story with a few crazy, horrifying twist. It also has one of the best musical scores I've heard in a game. Another interesting bit about it, is that it allowed you to change your cross hair.

Set in 1923 You play as Patrick Galloway a magical Irish man that's recieved a letter from his best friend, Jeremiah Covenant, asking for his help to solve his families curse as his siblings are haunting him. Haunting him, with a vengeance.

I'll try my best to explain the story with SSes and descriptions of the goings on within and throw in some general humor as well as explanations with the not so story sses I take.

Jeremiah

Let's begin shall we?

"Ah, I'm tired of traveling and fighting the supernatural."

Patrick introduces us to himself and tells us about his past with Jeremiah, How they met, during a war while Jeremiah was his CO. Pretty standard stuff here.

Soldiers marching.

Undying%2012.JPG

Like I said, pretty standard stuff, until the Magical Pirates attack!

Undying%2014.JPG

Patrick gets injured and hospitilized while Jeremiah and the troops move on, though Jeremiah leaves him the Gel'zhibar stone, the magical stone the shaman used to put him in the hospital.

Undying%20%2013.JPG

This magical stone glows when you can scyre to see scyre events, which allows you to see/hear past events.

Undying%201.JPG

Things like this.

Undying%202.JPG

Here Patrick meets one of the housemaids, he explains and apologizes for his delay, and the maid shows him to Jeremiahs quarters.

Undying%203.JPG

This is Aaron, Jeremiahs ghostly brother, he'll be annoying the shit out of you, and later attacking you for being in the house "unwanted". He's also one creepy fucker.

Undying%20%204.JPG

Patrick enters Jeremiahs room, to see his friend bedridden and deathly ill. Jeremiah explains why he called him here, wanting Patrick to help him solve his families curse, suddenly there's an ear piercing, haunting howl.

Undying%206.JPG

A strange woman runs away from Patrick in the green house.

Undying%207.JPG

Howlers, these beast are what's been causing the terrible noises, and they're as mean as they sound.

Undying%208.JPG

A howler taunts Jeremiah.

Undying%209.JPG

Jeremiah explains his families curse more, telling Patrick about the Standing Stones and how he took his siblings out to them, and read a passage from his fathers books, which caused the sea to boil and the land to shake, but something else happened, something not quite explainable. Jeremiah gives him a scroll and tells him his sister, Lizbeth has also been spotted on the grounds recently. The two head to bed for the night.

Undying10.JPG

Patrick heads to bed for the night and the next day uses his new scroll, which is a spell you can use.

Undying%2011.JPG

It's fucking useless if you know how to play but for your first time through it's an ok offensive spell.

5-9-08
Welcome back.

After learning his useless spell and walking down the hall some, a butler informs Patrick that someone has ransacked Lizbeths room last night. Patrick must be one hell of a sleeper if he didn't hear it seeing as how it's 3 rooms away.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-09-59-36_1.jpg

The maid in Lizbeths room informs you more about Lizbeth. Here be spoilers.
Lizbeth had a fiery temper, most likely due to losing her mother while she gave birth to Lizbeth. This particular maid took care of Lizbeth even as she withered away and died in her youth, probably her mid 20s if not younger. She also informs you that the gardener has seen Lizbeth about the grounds.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-10-25-89.jpg

They weren't kidding, this place really is a mess. That purple stone in my inventory? That's am amplifier which boost spell levels.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-11-21-97.jpg

More damage to the room.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-11-34-12.jpg

This scyre contains spoilers!
What an ugly critter!

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-11-51-01.jpg

Hungry Hungry Howlers.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-12-39-62.jpg

This scyre also contains spoilers!

Where Lizbeth was born, sadly you can't hear it but there's also a baby crying which makes it a lot creepier.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-13-38-25.jpg

In the kitchen now, looks like she eats well, useless old bat doesn't have the back door key a maid all the way across the house does. She also tells you about how Otto Keisinger has been staying as a guest and she (the maid) is supposed to be cleaning his quarters today.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-15-33-76.jpg

That crazy lady is back. Spoilers just in case.
Yes, that is Lizbeth, SSes will be better quality because for some reason I had textures set to medium instead of high.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-16-06-78.jpg

After we leave the kitchen we see an open door, where Aaron's looking for a book quite fervently.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-16-46-15.jpg

Which he inadvertently leaves in your grasp. I don't think he even knows you're there really. It's a really long and boring poem though so it's not story important.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-17-18-34.jpg

The great hall of paintings! Aaron takes pride in his work.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-17-53-37.jpg

The portrait of the siblings.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-18-03-50.jpg

This scyre contains massive huge OMG spoilers! It's also quite nasty.

I honestly have no idea why this is so early in the game, if you've played through it you know what I'm talking about.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-18-07-65.jpg

The barely visible maid (sorry bout that) informs you that this was Bethanys (Jeremiahs other sister, the redhead) office while Jeremiah was at the war.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-18-49-57.jpg

Arooo! A lot of howlers here in the east wing.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-19-22-82.jpg

Damn howlers always making a mess!

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-19-54-67.jpg

The house is so big it has a church in it. That purple stone is an amplifier, which you have to shoot to get down.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-20-46-14.jpg

A key in the rafters? It must be important.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-21-10-93.jpg

It opens this priest cabinent. Which contains 4 ether traps, which stop Aaron when he gets malevolent, and some bullets, for shooting.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-21-19-56.jpg

The ghostly minister doesn't take kindly to thieves though, and sends his spectral guards to get you after raiding his cabinet.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-21-27-54.jpg

One of the many times poltergeist will mess with you, in this case they shut all the lights off in the hallway by the church.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-22-14-18.jpg

Another time, they drop this chandelier after you grab the amplifier.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-23-03-14.jpg

I don't know their name but they're really creepy, especially since they can come out the floor. They also make some nasty noises.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-23-17-12.jpg

A strange scyre, shows a horse carriage in a storm in this picture. It's not really story relevant but it is interesting. Here it is without the scyre.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-23-52-20.jpg

And here it is with. I guess it's supposed to represent chaos or something.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-23-56-00.jpg

That's a nice guest room. Otto gets all the perks.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-25-40-00.jpg

Oops, it was like that when I got here honest! This leads to our first trip in Oneiris. It's an annoyingly evil place.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-26-06-12.jpg

These nasty things live here too.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-26-28-15.jpg

A better view of Oneiris, also shows what happens if those things spit on you.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-26-40-81.jpg

That's a long way down, be careful not to fall.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-26-48-75.jpg

We also meet Keisinger here for the first time, he's an annoying little ass that's invincible so you have to flee.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-27-37-56.jpg

I like this floor it pops up out of nowhere when you get close, we also see the Tibetan war cannon in this SS.

It's an infinite ammo ice launcher which will freeze enemies. You'd also swear it's alive as it sneezes, growls and flicks its tongue all on its own.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-27-47-22.jpg

Lazy maid. We also see the war cannon as Patrick holds it. I don't know if it's noticeable but the blood flows up into the ceiling which is interesting.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-28-08-64.jpg

Here be spoilers.
I'm sure a few of you know about the fireplace shortcut.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-28-21-54.jpg

Those nasty things are back.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-28-52-45.jpg

The cannon in action, as well as one of those nasty fuckers coming out the floor.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-29-11-25.jpg

They really are creepy.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-30-36-04.jpg

More ether traps, as well as a health pack.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-31-13-39.jpg

They're also all over the house.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-31-27-47.jpg

Aaron won't let you get this amplifier, he can be a real dick sometimes.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-31-59-53.jpg

Giving up and continuing on, Aaron slams the doors behind you and laughs.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-32-35-75.jpg

Yup more of our floor pals, and you have to kill a few before the door opens letting you out.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-32-48-29.jpg

Door's open. Let's go.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-33-08-04.jpg

Well then, looks like we're stuck.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-33-15-59.jpg

Or we could just jump through the mirror.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-33-21-34.jpg

Some of that Irish magic, you have to light these torches to get a spell.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-33-27-09.jpg

A puzzle spell, gets rid of barriers, like the one blocking the door and gets rid of nasty status effects, granted there's only 2.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-33-42-32.jpg

Dispel in action.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-33-55-65.jpg

Quick get in the dumb waiter before those nasty things eat you!

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-34-21-64.jpg

Those howlers, always making messes and breaking doors.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-34-58-04.jpg

Down in the cellar. There's an amplifier and some Molotov cocktails in here. It's also very dark.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-35-09-09.jpg

More howlers, and they get bigger.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-35-44-20.jpg

Howlers chase a gardener.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-36-39-45.jpg

Here's the gardener that saw Lizbeth.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-37-50-82.jpg

He lets you out.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-38-02-42.jpg

Lizbeth taunts you at the mausoleum.

"You're more of a meal, than a man!" What a bitch.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-38-27-95.jpg

Inside the mausoleum.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-40-02-70.jpg

You get this awesome spell in the maus, which lets you rev dead foes but I don't suggest it for that, as they usually end up attacking you again, but it also destroys skeletons instantly and makes some of the pirates commit suicide.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-40-17-36.jpg

Hello Howlers, we didn't forget about you.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-40-51-45.jpg

More hungry howlers, enjoying a pirate meal. At least I think it's a pirate.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-41-10-57.jpg

On hollowed ground now, have to go under the mausoleum.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-41-24-64.jpg

It's really dark under here.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-41-38-68.jpg

Skeletons! They're some tough ambres. Invoke turns them to dust though.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-42-00-92.jpg

We'd best go back inside.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-42-24-92.jpg

Shooting a tomb open, is that a good idea? Oh well it's our only option.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-42-46-70.jpg

Invoke in action, I wasn't kidding when I said it turns skeleton to dust.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-43-19-28.jpg

The old cemetery.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-43-40-11.jpg

Looks like we're taking this boat.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-43-46-72.jpg

On the beach.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-49-11-17_1.jpg

A tower, and of course some howlers.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-44-57-39.jpg

Wow what an ass.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-45-50-01.jpg

Some pirates discuss something. Probably talking about Patrick. One has a key you need to open the tower.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-46-13-90.jpg

Patrick tries to sneak up on them.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-46-35-23.jpg

Invoke in action again, this time against a pirate.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-46-49-76.jpg

Howlers on the prowl.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-47-45-04.jpg

Inside the tower are a key and a medallion you'll need later.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-47-58-01_1.jpg

More howlers, this time they break down a barn door to come after you.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-50-46-89.jpg

This howler eats a donkey. Mean old howler :(

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-50-56-18.jpg

Don't worry, donkey I'll revive you!

This can't be good.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-51-35-06.jpg

Inside the broken building now let's find that pirate.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-52-00-75.jpg

Invoke makes short work of pirates.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-52-18-06.jpg

Thanks for the shotgun, pal.

Undying%202008-05-09%2013-52-24-92.jpg

These things are Arcane Whorls which speed up mana recovery.

Butthole! He has a key we need, let's see if we can "borrow" it.

undying%202008-05-12%2011-48-17-41.jpg

Is this what those crazy monks worship? Cause it's fugly.

undying%202008-05-12%2011-49-15-85.jpg

Another poltergiest attack. They darken the room and blow out a window, which you need to jump out of.

See? Rooftops.

undying%202008-05-12%2011-50-28-50.jpg

undying%202008-05-12%2011-51-56-85.jpg

This monk was bold enough to ask his fugly god for help, then he got smooshed.

We continue the hunt for Lizbeth today. Back in the present we head to the locked door with the key, and are almost instantly greeted by poltergeist activity.

Should I just edit the first post or make new post for the deeper I get?

This was really rather a good game.
Worth noting all Barker actually did was rewrite the story and demand a redesign on the protagonist, though. He didn't design every aspect of the thing.

As I understand it, the developers came up with a game idea themselves and asked him to contribute. He then rewrote the story for them, provided some of the voice work, and demanded a change of protagonist (the player was originally some bald demonic monk guy).

I do recommend some of his books, though. Weaveworld would be a good place to start.

    undying%202008-05-14%2015-15-12-63.jpg

We head upstairs and meet a butler, him and Patrick talk about Ambrose, Jeremiahs asshole brother.

No it's max some the two above 1024 by 780.

The sses are something like 517 by 390 to prevent H and V-rape.

And that idea about updates being put in thier spoiler is a good one. I could just do them all like that now and from now on.

Undying came out in ah 02/19/01 according to gamefaqs.

You mean the basement with the skeletons and the water? I always run through that part because the skeltons usually kick my ass if I don't which is why that's so short.

Glad everyone's enjoying it so far. :)

Scyre's great because you can use it anytime and choose to ignore the voice telling you when to use it if you want, it also makes a decent flashlight and highlights enemies, as I'm sure you've noticed.

This was really rather a good game.
Worth noting all Barker actually did was rewrite the story and demand a redesign on the protagonist, though. He didn't design every aspect of the thing.

Really? Interesting, is it a book of his or something? I'd read it and I usually hate reading books thanks to the accelerated reader program.
As I understand it, the developers came up with a game idea themselves and asked him to contribute. He then rewrote the story for them, provided some of the voice work, and demanded a change of protagonist (the player was originally some bald demonic monk guy).

Ah, I see. That main character sounds awful too  I don't blame him.
To paraphrase what he apparantly said:
"Look, you've hired a gay man to help with your game. Give me a protagonist I'd want to sleep with."
Holy shit Clive Barker is gay?:!!:
BTW one of my favorite games of all time.
