The Tummy Tuck vs. Other Options

So I'm curious. I've lost about 80 pounds over the course of my high school career and since I've been in college, have bulked up with great upper body strength/leg strength. I'm proud of how lean I look in these areas.

My stomach, though, is by far the thing I am the most self conscious about. I've thought of doing a tummy tuck for the last two years and since I'm finally graduating, it may become financially viable in the foreseeable future. However, I was wondering if there was any way to get rid of the excess skin naturally. I've tried to do crunches, etc. but it seems like the process may take years, and even then I may not be guaranteed to get rid of the excess skin. My brother goes to the gym 3 days a week and runs marathons and still hasn't been able to get rid of it.

So my question to you guys...I'm 22, have this excess skin - is there anyway of getting rid of it other than going with surgery?

My second question is this: if I do resort to surgery, is there anything in particular I should look out for? Hidden costs? Bad doctors? Anyone have or know anyone with experience in this area? Is the potential harm (I mean realistic harm, not all of the possibilities) more dangerous than the benefit?

you're 22. don't get surgery now. i honestly can't tell you one way or the other if this skin will go away with exercise or time, but there's only one way to find out. you have your whole life to get surgery. don't feel like you should do it now just because you can afford it.

btw - congratulations on getting in shape. that's quite an accomplishment and you should be damn proud of yourself

Ditto, nice work :). yeah, you're not a teenager at least, but you're on the young side for this kind of thing. Excess skin from fast weight loss does shrink somewhat over time, and bodylifting surgery is generally intended for people who have lost hundreds of pounds instead of dozens, because the leftover skin is in big ol' flaps everywhere, and there's chafing and hygiene problems and such. It carries the same risks as any other surgery - most commonly post-op infection and bad reactions to anaesthesia. There will be some visible scarring too, according to wiki. Seems like a pretty big deal.

Tell me, has anyone else commented on it? Have you sought comment? Without denigrating your own experience, I will say its often hard to be objective about your own body, and if its not a big deal for other people, its worth considering that it might not be nearly so noticeable as you think.

I'd wait a while. You're still growing, so any skin surgery would more than likely be ruined.

And you've done a great job so far, don't expect your stomach to be perfectly flat. Guys that have perfectly flat abs tend to be ones that do body building as a living. Just keep at what you're doing, and ask a doctor about it (not a cosmetic surgeon) if it continues to bother you.

I'm in the EXACT situation as you. I thought off and on about resorting to surgery, but I'm always against it. Mainly because I'm still seeing miniscule results that continue to be encouraging. 22 is still young, there's plenty of time for you to get to the point where you're happy.
Also keep in mind what The Cat has mentioned. I know I'm much harder on myself still than anyone else.

You lose the elasticity as you get older, thankfully you're not 30 yet. Keep it up with the diet and exercise as that will save you money in the long run.

If you're working for 6 pack abs that may not happen as thats mostly genetic.

No, it's really been about me for the most part. I know they say you shouldn't do this for other people, and I know it'll sound like I would be doing just that, but it really makes me feel awkward every time I'm in a relationship and people look at my body and assume the rest of it is as lean as what is visible fully clothed. I've had girlfriends say it doesn't bother them and I don't really believe them when they say it, and it really does bother me when I look in the mirror, even when I'm single.

But from the sounds of it - it seems like if I work harder and more consistently I can make the excess skin a bit tighter and more bearable for my mind. Like you guys have said, I'm probably being too hard on myself, but it's difficult being objective about something as personal as this.

Anyway - thanks a lot for the responses. I'll try to draft up an intensive routine and see how I do over the next few years.

The general guideline is to wait 6-12 months after your weight has stabilized before you consider surgery.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

I just wanted to chime in and say that I see a lot of posts on bodybuilding forums of people complaining about "loose skin," only to have it turn out to be really awkwardly placed residual fat stores. So you might want to have your BF% professionally tested to rule out that possibility.

If it's really bad -- stretch marks and really thin loose hanging stuff -- then yeah the tuck is probably the only option. I don't know a lot about those, though. I do know that the resulting scars I've seen can be pretty darn big, though; which, if you're concerned about the opposite sex, might be a consideration.

I used to have a similar issue with my upper body. My genes have cursed me with storing fat in the chest, which makes for excess skin around my pectorals and such. I hit the workout scene hard, mainly for this reason and made my diet top notch.

Now I am told that it is completely not noticeable, though I can "still see it", and my brother- who is my twin and never works out- still has what I used to have.

My point is this. It was tighten up with diet and exercise, the body works that way. See just how good you can get it without surgery, and then if you must, try.
