iPod Touch vs. iPod Classic

Black IceBlack Ice Charlotte, NCRegistered User regular
I'm going to be purchasing a new iPod this week. I'm trying to decide between the iPod Touch and the iPod Classic.

The options:
  • iPod Touch - 16 gigs, $310 (refurbished by Apple)
  • iPod Classic - 80 gigs, $250

I've only played around with the Touch a few times. I had a pretty good experience with my friend's, but today at the store I had error messages when testing the web browser :| Not good, is this a common problem or a freak accident?

The iPod Classic will basically be a rehash of my current 5G 30 gig iPod. It has burnt out pixels and looks ridiculous playing videos (which I used to watch very often). On my current 30 gig iPod, which is approximately half full, I have:
  • 8 GB of songs
  • 1 GB of Videos
  • 2 GB of TV Shows

With Album Artwork and some photos, it's approximately 14-15 gigs. I could easily cut down the songs down to 5 gigs (224 songs by the Beatles, for instance, that I almost never listen to) or less. I loved the video feature for a while, but it became a bit tedious converting things from YouTube to put on my iPod - and praying the audio synced with the video. If I have an iPod Touch, I could simply access the videos from YouTube, though. That brings me to the question: if I have a YouTube Account, can I access it with an iPod Touch? Would my Favorites/Playlists be easily accessible?

However, with a (seemingly mediocre) YouTube browser, I can't imagine having as many videos stored on my iPod. I don't have much experience with the Web Browser, but I hate the keyboard so far - I guess I could get used to it...

So what do you all recommend? I would love the ability to browse the web and access YouTube, and I can easily cut down the number of songs I currently have to allow adequate room for the iPod Touch.

The iPod Classic, however, is tried and true. The only thing is, it's 80 gigs. I don't need that much, and I use my iPod every day, so I'm thinking something different would be kind of nice.

So my questions would be..
  1. What would you recommend to me, considering I use my 5G iPod every day?
  2. If I have a YouTube Account, can I access it with an iPod Touch? Will my Favorites/Playlists be easily accessible?
  3. iPod Touch owners, what are your experiences? Do you like the browser and YouTube functionality?
  4. How is the iPod Touch for merely listening to music? Does it take longer to get to the songs than the iPod Classic?
  5. What are the fingerprints like on the screen of the iPod Touch? Do they become unreasonable?
  6. Anything I'm overlooking? Any miscellaneous comments?

Thanks :)

I can't really give impressions of Youtube, as I never use it on my touch, but I will comment on some of the other stuff.

The browser is awesome, by far the best portable browser out there. I carry my touch and my phone with me everywhere, and although my phone has an awesome browser, I use the touch where I can because it's a better overall experience. Obviously you're limited by wifi availability, but the experience is so much better than any other portable, instant-on browser that it's worth the few seconds it takes to check for local available wifi.

I've had a multitude of iPods over the years (30GB 3rd Gen, 40GB 4th Gen, black 1st Gen iPod Nano, silver 2nd Gen iPod Nano, 16GB iPod touch) and I will say, hands down, that listening to music is the worst feature on the touch. That is to say, it is not up to par with the rest of the iPods I've owned. Any of them.

Let me qualify that: it doesn't really take longer to get to the songs, as you can sort them any way you would on any other iPod and it's actually quicker to scroll through long lists since you just browse by letter on the right side of the screen. The music sounds fine and the album art looks great.

The problem with the touch screen interface is that you have to be looking at it to use it. Part of why I still use my nano for working out is because I don't have to look at the damn thing to change the volume (this problem is unique to the touch, of course, as the iPhone has hardware volume controls). Same things goes for Cover Flow. It's pretty, it's fun to show off to your friends and you'll stop using it the split second you realize you have to pick up the iPod, turn it 90 degrees and wait for it to shift to vertical mode just to adjust the volume.

As far as the screen getting fingerprinty, yes, it will happen. Just carry around a microfiber cloth to clean it with, wipe it down when it starts to bother you and you'll be fine.

Currently, I use three iPods: my 40GB 4th Gen for my music collection, my 4GB black nano for working out and the 16GB touch for movies (I have eleven full length movies and three 43 minute TV episodes on it right now) and a small amount of music (less than 1GB). If you don't mind having to look at the screen every time you want to adjust something on your iPod, then get the touch. In fact, I highly recommend the touch, despite my complaints. My touch goes with me everywhere.

    Edit: woah, long.

    1. What would you recommend to me, considering I use my 5G iPod every day?

Ipod Touch, it is the best ipod out there.

    2. If I have a YouTube Account, can I access it with an iPod Touch? Will my Favorites/Playlists be easily accessible?

Sorry, no idea.. i've only used it to view stuff occasionally.

    3. iPod Touch owners, what are your experiences? Do you like the browser and YouTube functionality?

It's fantastic, I also use it for BBC iplayer stuff too. For example, go to the BBC iplayer site. Select what I want to watch and it plays fullscreen.

    4. How is the iPod Touch for merely listening to music? Does it take longer to get to the songs than the iPod Classic?

Tap the music icon and select your playlist, music etc.

    5. What are the fingerprints like on the screen of the iPod Touch? Do they become unreasonable?

Very easily wiped away, because it's a glass screen and not plastic it is surprisingly easy to clean.

    6. Anything I'm overlooking? Any miscellaneous comments?

If you want your own video on there like from your dvds etc. Then I highly recommend videora i've converted stuff like futurama and so forth to watch when I like.
You may want to get the 32GB version if you have a large collection or want to put lots of video on there, I myself have the 16GB version.
You can get various remotes, because the downside to doing things like pausing and changing tracks is: Press button, drag finger across screen, press home button then music icon (if you left it somewhere else like in safari) then press pause, skip track etc.

For Pause and Next Track the iPhone's headphones have a button - double click to skip track and single to play/pause. Don't know if it works with iPod Touch too.

The responses so far are great, please keep them coming - I need more input. I can't upgrade the iPod Touch to the 32 gig model, as this one is already $100 off. I wouldn't even fathom getting one at the normal price, but with the $300 opportunity I'm heavily thinking about it.

I use my iPod primarily when I'm lifting weights and when I'm sleeping. I never use it when I'm out running, I use it on trips, but I thought it would be awesome to have YouTube functionality when I'm around my friends just hanging out. I always had something entertaining on my iPod when I used to use the video functionality if people became bored.

The Internet browser sounds very alluring, but the fact that you have to look at the screen to adjust volume and change songs doesn't sound that good.... thanks for pointing that out, I would have never thought of that otherwise.

(By the way, GrimReaper - Videora is a solid program, I use it for all of my conversions at the moment. :) If I have access to the Internet, I wouldn't have to use it, though..)

Again, please keep the input coming!!

As I mentioned in my other post you can get remotes to control things like next track, pausing etc. You can also use earphones that have a sound control on them.

After having an iPod since the first generation (when it was released for Windows, anyway), it really wasn't that bad to switch to an iPod touch. I don't ever remember thinking "this kind of sucks to take it out and switch tracks". The browser has worked flawlessly for me, as has YouTube. If you're comfortable with the 16GB limit, make the jump. I highly doubt you'll regret it.

I think I've decided on the Classic

I've been thinking about how often I would use the Internet browser (rarely, seeing as I don't travel often) and how often I would be having to look at the screen to adjust the volume. I know I could buy remotes, but that's just one more thing to carry around. I like convenience. I use my iPod all the time, and I seldom look down to adjust the volume. The Classic just seems like the more practical choice right now. I would love to have some of the Touch's features.. but some of the changes just aren't right for me right now.
