Mysterious Broken Sound Card

My sound card broke sometime last night. They worked at about 10:30, I wasted time browsing these forums until about 11:00, turned on my computer today at 3:00 and they were broken. Later I'll clean off the sound card, take it out and take a look at it, but are there any ideas you guys have before I go taking my computer apart?

have you tried plugging them in something else (ie: ipod) to make sure it's not your computer failing to output?

I just plugged my headphones into my computer and have deduced that my soundcard somehow failed. It puts out this static-y noise that is really loud. Also, how can I change the thread title?

Strangely enough, it began working again so...crisis averted.

It might be starting to fail - before my sound card died for good, it would cut out the speakers for a while, forcing me to use headphones, then cut out headphones forcing me to go back to speakers.

But at the same time, it might be the slot itself that is failing - when my sound card died, it took one of my PCI slots with it.
