I would just wear ring mail til it stops training armor. At that point you can wear something like swamp/ice/dragon armor. Being able to cast higher level spells in the heavier armors is not really feasible without some serious scumming.
Is there an easy way to dump loads of XP into Armor skill without too much risk?
Thinking about leveling, killing some big stuff like a pile of hydras, then putting on some Heavy and trying to boost it quickly. Any way that could be done? Do walking into traps or casting while in it skill up Armor or only getting attacked?
Armor raises based on turns spent wearing heavy armor, as far as I know. There are items (and spells?) that will direct your current unspent xp into a specific skill, but I don't know if there is one for armor. And they are rather rare, at any rate.

Might be mistaken, but I believe the only thing that'll force XP into one skill is one of the drawn cards. The skill that's picked is random, but weighted towards higher level skills.
*facepalm* I thought I'd edited this into my last post but obviously I didn't. Sometimes it just doesn't pay to be an idiot.
I've found one deck with a sage card and one manual through the time I've played, but maybe they're more common deeper (as I basically die at D21+.)
For what it's worth on casters, I'd sooner go Ozocubus or stone-skin for a caster that wants AC. Stone skin gets you that valuable earth skill and ozocubus gets you that lovely enchantment skill. I haven't tried ozocubus + elven armour but I'm assuming it still works as a combo.

Someone earlier in the thread suggested trying out a Spriggan Conj, and I did so at the time and was horribly murdered by the first Orc Priest I ran in to. That happened like three times in a row .
But, seeing that 5.1 was out I decided to give it another try.
And I think I've got one of my best characters going now. Currently lvl9, about to go to lvl8 of the dungeon.
I think I've had one melee character get further, so this is by far my best caster character.
This is the first game where I've been able to experience the wonder of M.Cloud. Such fun .
I just know I'm going to be butchered by the first ranged spell caster I see, as I haven't be able to pick up any resistances yet. No rings or amulets yet.
I've only been wearing robes up til now, should I be trying some different armors? I don't quite know how the different armors effect spell casting.
EDIT: and holy crap. Soooo many orcs. Some major stair dancing trying to clear Orc 2. Orc 1 is littered with corpses from me going up and down and bringing smaller groups up. I eventually choose wrong between going up and chugging a healing pot.
Some orc warrior hit me for 29 damage .
I probably should have skipped the Mines for a little bit and gone further into the dungeon. Oh well.
Going into the orc mines early as a Spriggan is insane. Especially conjurer. You can get away with mephitic clouding the bigger crowds, but your early killing power (especially for groups) just isn't high enough to avoid eventually having to climb down the stairs into a group of orcs backed by wizards and priests.
Really no class (except Orc Priest, I guess...) has any business going in there until smite damage becomes negligible or they're capable of killing at least one thing (preferably more) per action.

I want to say they don't but it's been such a long time since I managed to get working deflect that I'm honestly not sure. Now I'm playing a crusader just to find out for you (one more excuse to play as merfolk.)
I didn't know the new portals in 0.5.1 expired, so I missed a good chance to kick ass in what I assume were sewers. Oh well.
One thing with spriggan casters is that you may sincerely wish to turn off all skills but spellcasting until you find an energy staff. Food management is pretty key for them, and it makes the speed advantage that much more spectacular.

As you saw, greater nagas are really really nasty. You might want to put off the last level of snake pit for a bit, their poison arrow hurts like hell.
I think I've heard that Ozcubo's is better for pure casters but does not stack with heavy armor, unlike stoneskin. And I believe that deflect missiles counts a beefed up version of repel, so no stacking.

Shatter or lee's rapid deconstruction will get rid of the green and stone walls although you need a bunch of spell power to pull it off. Depending on how big the room is, I'm not sure teleport control is precise enough to get in, and wands of disintegration don't take out green or stone walls.

The last couple of games I've played have taunted me with things like this, on like dungeon lvl2 or 3. I'll see a 3x3 square of loot surrounded by translucent walls. And no way to get to them .

I was actually doing fairly well for a time, there was just so many orcs. The only troublesome ones were Sorcerers and the one Knight I saw. The sorcs kept summoning things that summoned more things, that was annoying.
I would basically pull 3-5 up the stairs with me, M.Cloud them and then dart or frost bolt them to death. I had 2-3 dozen dead orcs on Mines lvl1.
Do Sorcs have the ability to teleport you? As I got teleported several times, which led to some frantic running to stairs.
Uh, what exactly is going on in those screens? I've never made it down that far before .
And I had an embarassing death.

I once got poisoned, killed everything, ran to a corner and tried to run out the poison, but I died a very slow death. Then I noticed the wand of healing in my inventory ><
theclam I believe you can use your wand of polymorph on the oklob plant and your weapon should be strong enough to one shot red jellies. As long as you take them on one at a time your gear shouldn't get ruined.
Uh, what exactly is going on in those screens? I've never made it down that far before .
The top one is 4 oklob plants right next to each other. They are stationary enemies that can hit anything on the red Xs for lots of acid damage (which also reduces armor quality). You can get stuff like -3 boots after a battle with a single one if you aren't careful.
The second done is an oklob in a room with tons of jellies (which also reduce armor quality).

The first thing I do in every new Crawl game now is go through the first two levels and pick up every scroll as usual, but also every weapon and armor on the ground. That way I have a better chance of ID'ing Detect Curse and then Remove Curse.
Two rings of Resist Magic and 1 Resist Cold - what's the smart play there? I already have a level of Rcold from something else... does the Resist Magic stuff work vs all incoming stuff or only untyped or what?
Fun Fact: my ghosts like to kill me with Bolt of Cold and Bolt of Iron.
Magic resistance only works for things you can resist outright. Being paralyzed or put to sleep by spells (I'm not even sure any monsters cast these, but player ghosts do), being confused, being banished to the abyss, being slowed, being teleported.
It's only for actual spells that are cast on you, so it doesn't work against monster abilities or traps and the like.
Resist magic would probably be the one more likely to save your life and the one you'd most likely find yourself in a situation where you don't want to waste a turn changing your equipment. It kind of depends on what race you are, though. Spriggans can pretty easily get by with their natural magic resistance, but with trolls or something it's probably worth the insurance.
Argh, just lost my lv. 14 Troll Monk. Granted, it was to a hydra, which is fair. Those buggers are tough.
That was the best character I've ever had - made it through The Lair, Orcish Mines, The Hive (well, what I could get to), and The Swamp finally did me in.
I think next time I'll go with a Mountain Dwarf or Minotaur and do the mace & flail thing.
Trolls are good for beginners, but the better you get the more you realize that they are pretty much become unplayable past mid game. For you MD or Minotaur try starting off as a healer and spamming heal. It makes it much easier to get gifts from okawaru since you don't have to waste piety spamming might just to get haste castable.
God, what a stupid way to die. My guy was a machine of pure death, cleared mines and lair no problems. Find an ice statue guarding artefact plate mail. That take sucker out with my wand of fire ball, quaff a levitation potion (it was in lair, with deep water surrounding) fly over. Can't pick it up yet. No biggie. Go over and kill some ice beasts. Levitation wears off, and I drown.
Didn't even get to check out the platemail, or the artefact spear that was right next to it.

I just starved to death with my 3rd best score ever 1 square away from the food in my stash while wearing Amulet of the Gourmand + Poison Resistance armor in my pack.
I keep running into these "castle" things on like lvl6 or lvl7 of the Dungeon. The first one was an Orc Castle, with entirely too many orcs. I killed almost all of them, then an Orc Knight got me with a crossbow .
The 2nd castle had an electric ell in the moat. I hate electric eels .
I like all these new strongholds. Minitombs, Orc Castles, Gnoll Castles, Dragon Lairs... Pretty cool.
I ran into one of those. NO THANK YOU. Damn undead deep elf was nigh-unkillable. The rest of them vary from "Oh cool," to "Oh, I guess I'm as good as dead." depending on where they spawn.

I would just wear ring mail til it stops training armor. At that point you can wear something like swamp/ice/dragon armor. Being able to cast higher level spells in the heavier armors is not really feasible without some serious scumming.
Thinking about leveling, killing some big stuff like a pile of hydras, then putting on some Heavy and trying to boost it quickly. Any way that could be done? Do walking into traps or casting while in it skill up Armor or only getting attacked?
Might be mistaken, but I believe the only thing that'll force XP into one skill is one of the drawn cards. The skill that's picked is random, but weighted towards higher level skills.
I've found one deck with a sage card and one manual through the time I've played, but maybe they're more common deeper (as I basically die at D21+.)
For what it's worth on casters, I'd sooner go Ozocubus or stone-skin for a caster that wants AC. Stone skin gets you that valuable earth skill and ozocubus gets you that lovely enchantment skill. I haven't tried ozocubus + elven armour but I'm assuming it still works as a combo.

Record for me, had just gotten my first rune ;/
I think I will look into the armor spells instead of wearing armor. Ignoring the skillup factor, what's better of the two? I generally start with Ice and pickup Iron Bolt, Enchantment has always been a goal but never realized.
I know Stoneskin and Ozcubo's won't work together, what about Repel and/or Deflect Missiles?
But, seeing that 5.1 was out I decided to give it another try.
And I think I've got one of my best characters going now. Currently lvl9, about to go to lvl8 of the dungeon.
I think I've had one melee character get further, so this is by far my best caster character.
This is the first game where I've been able to experience the wonder of M.Cloud. Such fun
I just know I'm going to be butchered by the first ranged spell caster I see, as I haven't be able to pick up any resistances yet. No rings or amulets yet.
I've only been wearing robes up til now, should I be trying some different armors? I don't quite know how the different armors effect spell casting.
EDIT: and holy crap. Soooo many orcs. Some major stair dancing trying to clear Orc 2. Orc 1 is littered with corpses from me going up and down and bringing smaller groups up. I eventually choose wrong between going up and chugging a healing pot.

I probably should have skipped the Mines for a little bit and gone further into the dungeon. Oh well.
Really no class (except Orc Priest, I guess...) has any business going in there until smite damage becomes negligible or they're capable of killing at least one thing (preferably more) per action.
I want to say they don't but it's been such a long time since I managed to get working deflect that I'm honestly not sure. Now I'm playing a crusader just to find out for you (one more excuse to play as merfolk.)
I didn't know the new portals in 0.5.1 expired, so I missed a good chance to kick ass in what I assume were sewers. Oh well.
One thing with spriggan casters is that you may sincerely wish to turn off all skills but spellcasting until you find an energy staff. Food management is pretty key for them, and it makes the speed advantage that much more spectacular.

As you saw, greater nagas are really really nasty. You might want to put off the last level of snake pit for a bit, their poison arrow hurts like hell.
I think I've heard that Ozcubo's is better for pure casters but does not stack with heavy armor, unlike stoneskin. And I believe that deflect missiles counts a beefed up version of repel, so no stacking.
Anyone know what my options are? I'm pretty sure a wand of disintegration will get me in, or dropping right on top of it with a ring of teleport control, but anything else? Anyone ran into this before?
Shatter or lee's rapid deconstruction will get rid of the green and stone walls although you need a bunch of spell power to pull it off. Depending on how big the room is, I'm not sure teleport control is precise enough to get in, and wands of disintegration don't take out green or stone walls.
The last couple of games I've played have taunted me with things like this, on like dungeon lvl2 or 3. I'll see a 3x3 square of loot surrounded by translucent walls. And no way to get to them
I was actually doing fairly well for a time, there was just so many orcs. The only troublesome ones were Sorcerers and the one Knight I saw. The sorcs kept summoning things that summoned more things, that was annoying.
I would basically pull 3-5 up the stairs with me, M.Cloud them and then dart or frost bolt them to death. I had 2-3 dozen dead orcs on Mines lvl1.
Do Sorcs have the ability to teleport you? As I got teleported several times, which led to some frantic running to stairs.
And I had an embarassing death.

The top one is 4 oklob plants right next to each other. They are stationary enemies that can hit anything on the red Xs for lots of acid damage (which also reduces armor quality). You can get stuff like -3 boots after a battle with a single one if you aren't careful.
The second done is an oklob in a room with tons of jellies (which also reduce armor quality).
The worst part was that the Remove Curse scrolls were listed as {tried}, as apparently I read one very early on before I put on any cursed stuff. But I didn't remember that, so I was tearing through the dungeon, looking for a remove curse scroll... which I already had on me.
At the time I didn't even know it was a Ring of Hunger, I just thought it odd that I was going through food rather fast.
The first thing I do in every new Crawl game now is go through the first two levels and pick up every scroll as usual, but also every weapon and armor on the ground. That way I have a better chance of ID'ing Detect Curse and then Remove Curse.

Fun Fact: my ghosts like to kill me with Bolt of Cold and Bolt of Iron.
It's only for actual spells that are cast on you, so it doesn't work against monster abilities or traps and the like.
Resist magic would probably be the one more likely to save your life and the one you'd most likely find yourself in a situation where you don't want to waste a turn changing your equipment. It kind of depends on what race you are, though. Spriggans can pretty easily get by with their natural magic resistance, but with trolls or something it's probably worth the insurance.
Trolls are good for beginners, but the better you get the more you realize that they are pretty much become unplayable past mid game. For you MD or Minotaur try starting off as a healer and spamming heal. It makes it much easier to get gifts from okawaru since you don't have to waste piety spamming might just to get haste castable.
Didn't even get to check out the platemail, or the artefact spear that was right next to it.

I ran into one of those. NO THANK YOU. Damn undead deep elf was nigh-unkillable. The rest of them vary from "Oh cool," to "Oh, I guess I'm as good as dead." depending on where they spawn.
They came out one at a time, got confused one at a time, and fell in the water and died one at a time
