Yeah, I macro'd memorizing a spell with my priest. He just wasn't smart enough.

Anyways, I had never cast too many spells at once before, so now I'm not sure what to do. I got mutated, I guess, and here's what happened to me.

Your digestive system is specialised to digest meat(I can eat when not hungry)
    You are dopey(Int -1)
Space occasionally distorts in your vicinity(???)

The thing is, I would be happy to take the -1 int hit for the meat thing, but I don't know what's up with the spacial distortion stuff. Is that bad? Is it... really bad?

Edit: Doesn't matter now, got poisoned to death from eating killer bee's.

    Don't eat killer bee's.

The meat one means carnivore. It's considered bad by the game, but actually it's good, because you can stand to not eat apples and shit if you can eat more of what you kill. Yak herd means being super-full (or dead)
Spatial Distortion means random teleporting. It's not good.

+2/+4 short sword of speed on the 2nd level is gooooood.

What I'm particularly liking about the ghoul is that when I survive the inevitable occasional gang raping I can instantly heal back from the abundant meat left behind afterwards.

What are the numbers on weapons? +1/+2 for instance. I assume its like D&D where you get bonuses for using it in a certain hand right? How do you switch hands if so?

First number is + to hit, second one is + to damage. Just remember it's the opposite way around to how they give you the stats when you examine the item.

    Thanks Jam Warrior.

Damn it. Just lost my level 12 Hill Orc Berserker. He was hacking maniacally through woodland creatures in the Lair when he got mangled by a Hydra. Hydra tip:
They don't seem to be affected by physical attacks. Use magic. Wands of fireball and frost work well.
He was nigh unstoppable with his +6/+0 vampiric war axe. I also found a wand of Digging. Thats a new one on me. It apparently digs through walls but I didn't try it.

Ugh, I finally came up with something that seemed to work okay (Mountain Dwarf Monk), and then I found a shiny new cursed ring of hunger. :(

I managed to live for a while after that, until I had my skull bashed in by an Ogre.

Frem, that doesn't do anything, I'm afraid. I've also tried setting xterm and xterm-color in the preferences.

In particular, I can't see my remembered map: everything outside my LOS is black. The X map doesn't display right either. Presumably my computer is just rending certain grays as really really really dark grays, but for the life of me I can't think how to fix it. :|

I've never been able to get MacOS Terminal to work right either, because Terminal only wants to display eight colors, not the classical sixteen-color ANSI terminal set.

If you have sufficient Unix-fu, install X11 (from your original MacOS distribution disc; it doesn't install by default, but you can add it in), then play using xterm. That's what I did.

Thanks! Xterm works fine, though my Unix-fu is practically nil. I figured out how to set the background to black and the text to white and can play Crawl with no problems. I can't, though, figure out how to make xterm default to these colors. My research refers me to all sorts of files and folders that don't apparently exist. Maybe they're hiding?

well i just got the 0.3.4 tile build to compile on my macbook pro (10.5.2) - which makes me very happy to play crawl wherever i go now! if anyone is trying to do the same and has any trouble, let me know and i'll try and help you get it compiled. i had to edit a couple makefiles and an include file to get all the libs sorted out.

Your digestive system is specialised to digest meat(I can eat when not hungry)

    This one means:
You can eat chunks of flesh when not Hungry
You receive somewhat more nutrition from meat food
You receive somewhat less nutrition from vegetable food

The carnivore and herbivore mutations come in three levels each. At level three, you receive NO nutrition from food of the opposite kind (so level 3 herbivore is very much to be avoided).

Man I love the "of the gourmand" stuff. Every enemy becomes a walking ration. I don't suppose there's any way to cook meat is there? Maybe I should try to shoot a wand of flame at some.

Also does anyone have a list of gods and what benefits you get from worshiping them?

This is the first roguelike I've been hooked on. I really like the tile set version. Being able to use the mouse for things really makes the game easier to play.

No, there is no cooking in this game. (There's a little in ADOM.)

A religion spoiler is available on the CrawlWiki, which is incomplete in many respects but appears fairly complete for this. There's also another page of Stone Soup spoilers.

    Try invoking xterm as follows:
xterm -bg black -fg white -font 10x20 -geometry 80x35

Alternatively, put the following incantations in a file called .Xdefaults (the initial period is important) in your home directory:
    XTerm.VT100.Background: black
    XTerm.VT100.Foreground: white
    XTerm.VT100.Font: 10x20
    XTerm.Geometry: 80x35

Then you need to force X11 to load them. If this doesn't happen automagically, then some config file somewhere needs to have the line
    xrdb .Xdefaults

added to it at the bottom. Unfortunately I don't remember what file where, on a Mac.

Dammit, I just starved to death.

The only way to the next dungeon level was through a trap door, so I went down only to find what appeared to be a couple of rooms and nothing more. I searched around and found a couple of secret doors, but not enough to really get anywhere.

Eventually I starved to death before finding the right door.

I was using the "long" search (5 key, not numpad), is there more chance of finding things with this key than the usual 1-turn search key (numpad 5 / s)?

I never seem to get too far. Furthest I've gotten is Dungeon Level 5. =/ I need more practice.

Hm, neat. The first thing is more or less what I was doing -- though I hadn't figured out how to make the font bigger. .Xdefaults isn't loading, and I can't find the appropriate file either (though I did find out that goddamn OS X has been hiding all sorts of folders and files from me), but that's mostly academic at this point. I put the detailed xterm call in X11's Application's menu, so I can get an appropriate window with just a few clicks. Convenient! :^:

After losing yet another Draconian Transmuter, I tried a Merfolk Crusader who got off to a good start but couldn't cope with Ogres and then launched a Deep Elf Conjurer and picked a Book of Conjuring (Flame). So far this is working great: I got to start with Magic Dart instead of the stupid short-range flame-puff, and that got my Conjuration and Spellcasting up really fast, so now, with the assistance of a Ring of Fire, I'm toasting things (especially Orcs -- like marshmellows!) left and right and looking forward to a reliable Bolt of Magma. The fact that I don't get Sticky Flames is a definite downer, though, and I almost died to a Centaur once, so when this goes south I may try Fire Elementalist again.

I just lost that Conjurer by waking up an orc nest because I thought it was just an Orc hallway -- should have gone for a better viewing angle. Stealth is a really handy thing to level up, by the way, if you're a caster.

Has anyone tried compiling the tile version yet? I'd love to have something other than the text-based vi keys movement version in Arch Linux.

I think I'm missing some dependency, but the documentation doesn't say what they are, and it's unclear from the error.

Looks like your C++ headers or standard libraries are not installed or not up to date. Are you certain you have all the packages your Linux distribution requires for compiling C++ programs that use the standard C++ library?

Well, considering that I've got a summer job doing C++ stuff in Google Summer of Code... yeah, I'm pretty sure I've got all that. *runs make on project again*

edit: Some extremely cool person who maintains a pkgbuild for the standard crawl made a pkgbuild for the tiled one when I requested it. Apparently the game needed a patch for certain versions of GCC or something. I <3 the Arch Linux community.

I just got the stone soup tile version of Crawl to compile in Ubuntu. I didn't install it, I just run it locally and didn't install it for everyone, However, it can't find my init.txt, and when I put it into /home/.crawlrc the game crashes. Any ideas?

On the screenshots, your inventory is displayed on the main screen to the lower left. I only see my inventory spaces graphically by pressing "i" to get to the inventory screen. Anyone know how to set that up so that it's under my minimap?

HOLY Shit. I've started using the stone soup with tiles, and rolled a Minotaur Berserker. This game just got WAY more interesting. I got to the Temple for the first time, pissed off Trog by renouncing my religion (He nuked me from orbit with 9 fireballs), then started with Okawaru. Then I ran into some named spell casting ogre priestess or something. She fucked me up.

At one point, 8 two headed ogres spawned around me, pissed. I barely escaped. Did Trog do that to get revenge after I ditched his religion? I quaffed a speed potion and ran like hell. After that I was out of my depth for my level running to survive Killer Bees and all sorts of nasty shit. FUCK you TROG.

WOW. That was a blast. My score is 5x my highest previous roguelike score EVER. Move over IVAN, we have a new graphical client to play.

Yes, summoning packs of hostile humanoids is one of Trog's punishment effects.

    Fuck's sake!

Well, that run went poorly. I was playing a Transmuter, made it to the second floor and was level 3. Then I ran into Sigmund, Jessica and Terence at the same time.

I managed to take Jessica and Terence down, but Sigmund turned invisible and level drained me with a wand. I died shortly thereafter.

The random number gods are harsh.

The game I'm in now is going well though. I just made it to Level 8 of the Lair of Beasts. I've got a +5/+6 artifact mace with +5 AC, two rings that buff magic resistance (one is an artifact) which makes me "incredibly resistant to magic", and a ring of sustenance to make rations last longer. The tips and tricks I read on the wiki have really helped.

These being the most helpful tips so far:
Test scrolls, potions, and wands yourself. Save identify scrolls for equipment (jewelry and runed things). In the skills screen, disable any skills you don't want trained. Specialization is key.

Can someone tell me how to use items like crystal balls and decks of cards?

This game is pretty awesome, but way more complex than the DS roguelikes I'm used to. I'm still trying to learn all the controls. I haven't made it past floor 5 yet.

Equip the cards and then use Shift+e to evoke from them. Then, stare drooling into the depths of the crystal ball as a passing rat nibbles your head off. :^:

My Dark Elf Fire Elementalist had no trouble getting down to Lair 10 (where there wasn't anything interesting). I'm not sure what to do now, though. I don't have any poison resistance, so I'm reluctant to try snakes. Will Lighting & Cold resists get me through Swamp? Should I backtrack and try to find the Orc Mines to get enough money to buy a poison-resistance ring (it did other things too-- looked handy) I saw in a Lair shop?
