I just found it on another forum I read too, it apparently originated from neogaf, but I'm certainly not going to find out.

They're the exact models from KI 2/GOLD. This can't be for a new game.

...man, what happened at rare? Normally they keep secrets so well, and suddenly we get an insane number of leaks.

Although this could just be a fan mockup, since releasing any fake rare news right now would be most likely to be taken seriously.

It's rare taking the piss. They're old images. For example:

    glacius.jpg

They've just put them up for the Press Visit for Viva Pinata/Banjo as a joke.

I wouldn't put it past them for them really to be working on it, mind.

KI's art style has always bothered me. In that there isn't really one, they just made sprites out of poser models.

I remember that the original Killer Instinct was supposed to be the Ultra 64's killer app.

Then the console got delayed and they ported the game onto SNES.

It ended up not being terribly impressive.

Pretty sure that was supposed to be KI2, which eventually got ported to 64.

I thought the arcade game was pretty cool (Which was running on a 32-bit arcade board instead of prototype Ultra 64 hardware as the attract sequence claimed) and I spent many hours playing the SNES port.

And the original Gameboy port. Which was pretty insane at the time.

EDIT: Reverse is correct, Killer Instinct and Cruisn' USA were supposed to be the killer launch apps for the Ultra 64. Cruisn' showed up, KI fans had to wait until the improved port of KI 2, which was called KI Gold.

I used to love KI back in the day, but that was primarily youth/nostalgia and "O MY GOD DID YOU SEE THAT AWESOME", plus ninjas and icemen. And the music was great.

But really, there is no way this is going to be anything remotely good if it's ever getting made. There are only 4 or 5 companies in this world today that have the capabilities and talent to produce a fighting game that is not complete dogshit.

And Rare is most certainly not one of them.

The one on the N64 had 3D backgrounds, but 2D sprites for the characters.

2d. The sprites were based on 3d models like in DKC and Diablo, though.

KI was basically taking the popularity of Mortal Kombat (Midway was involved with making it) and the psuedo 3d graphics that Rare made popular with Donkey Kong. Like Cruis'n USA it was just a showcase for new graphics... once gameplay caught up they were both left in the dirt.

However, KI Gold DID take place on a 3D axis, unlike KI and KI2 which used prerended video for the backgrounds which played forward and reverse as you walked around.

KI and KI2 were equipped with hard drives in the cabinet. KIGold, on the N64, obviously had space limitations so it took place in true 3D space, with fully textured modeling.

I liked KI for SNES over KI in the arcade, ironically.

KI Gold seemed like a cheaped-out KI2 as well. They didn't even have their full victory cutscenes.

My favorites to use were Jago and Fulgore. With Black Orchid on occassion.

I got my N64 with KI Gold and MK Trilogy. No Mario 64 until about a month later.

In retrospect, this might be why I didn't like the N64 that much. By contrast, I got Crash 1 and 2, and FFVII with my PSX.

KI Gold gave me so many blisters and made me so angry. I can't remember the last boss' name, but whenever he hit you up in the air and laughed... his life started refilling. I did eventually beat him on the hardest difficulty with Glacius. Regenerating health was the only way to beat him, I swear.

I played it so much that I could beat him as TJ Combo, who, in my mind, was the only guy worth playing in the game since he had charge moves.

I don't get that. Almost every character in KI had charge moves, but only 1 had them in KI Gold.

TJ Combo could juggle like a machine too. His stage music is stuck in my head to this day too... Also, Orchid's stage was sweet.

I was a HUGE fan of Kim Wu though. I was a fucking combo maniac with her.

I was never good at KI on the SNES. The game moved too slow for me (this was after I played Gold on Turbo speeds for months). I did miss Cinder though, he was cool looking.
