Yes, many of you probably have not heard of this game, and the few that have, probably learned of it from the demo. It was shipped two days ago and it's...Amazing.
For those of you that have your PS2 library filled with games like...Gitaroo-Man, Disaster Report, Everblue 2, Gungrave, Katamari, Road Trip, etc--this is definately the game for you. It's a mix of genre's, and describes itself as a sandbox game--which is the perfect description.
Far too much for me to explain, but it is ported by Atlus--and made by Irem (creators of Disaster report.). Basically, you get a robot which you can pimp up as you go through the game. Bandits attack you as you go through the enviroments, and the occasional impressive bossfight--you can also go through arena fights. Sounds like armored core? Yeah.
You can also walk about town, take a bus, or just take your mech around for a spin as you...Buy bread, rent a room and fancy it up with furniture, or perhaps stand on a street corner and play bemani style games with a variety of instruments to get tips from the crowd--or later on join a band and tour--while still playing instruments of course.
You can also do some fossil hunting. Do some trading (I.E. This town wants wine, this town wants milk.), turn your Bot(er, Trot) into a taxi and haul ass around town; Uh...Oh, and it also has KOTOR influences. You can make your character a total asshole, or a nice guy, or something else. As you go through the game, you get different titles, based on how you act.
Oh, you can also do some cooking, apparently. Neat, eh?
Also, to the Katamari fans out there, your robot controls JUST like the Katamari. So...It will be easier for you dudes to give it a go.

The songs are mind-numbingly painful. Tears of Blood painful.
But those aren't Atlus' fault thankfully; the songs were English in Bumpy Trot too.
I'll give it a chance eventually, but not for $49.99. Metal Saga was the one I chose, and I think I'm content with it.
Oh, who am I kidding. I don't have time to play it. I just bought Persona 2 as well.

Except Metal Saga's a traditional RPG, and Steambot's more of an action game.
Metal Saga's dark post-apocalyptic, and Steambot's got a happy-go-lucky olde style town thing going.
They're both at very least interesting. Especially if you dig canines with rocket launchers. (Not in Steambot)
i'm having fun with the game. it's wierd playing an action game in an RPG world.
I fucking loved robopit.
Anyway, robopit is a good analogy--except this game mixes other things. A LOT of other things.
i dont play games that dont allow me to fish.
i picked up the demo from work, and to be honest, i still havnt played it... im going to have to check out the demo, then probably ill be mad i spent my money on the Jaws game instead of this.
Anyway...Steambot gets more interesting the more I play. Some of the boss fights are suprisingly cool. It also has one of the hardest tutorial fights I have ever seen.
Now when I get this I will have to pay shipping again. Do you have any idea how much it costs to ship down here?!
Is Metal Saga actually good? It's getting raped down at gamerankings. Not that I have much respect for the gaming media but still...
However, it seems interesting. Might be a bit TOO non-linear, though.
[spoiler:be33bce6b9]Fought mechs out in the fields between towns ...and in the arena ...and in the one of three multi-tiered dungeons in the world (Think Diablo, but with giant robots.) Outfit my mech with various new parts (like Armored Core) Made new parts by combining other parts. Made a snazzy new custom emblem for it! Bought a studio apartment in the first town, outfit it with old newspapers and a bed. When to a furniture store in some other towns to browse for more stuff. Bought an aristocratic set of clothes.
I now look like Char Aznable. I have painted my mech red accordingly.Briefly touched on the cooking mini-game.
Excavated fossils, where I promptly took them to a museum, cleaned them off, and was treated to a puzzle mini game where you have to fit the different fossils together to make a complete dinosaur skeleton.
Started collecting movies to show at a local theatre.
Started collecting the various instruments. I should mention that each instrument has its own separate mini game, and there are a dozen instruments.
Played on street corners for money.
Bought some stocks at the stock market and made a few bucks.
Traded some goods between the towns.
Took Connie on a date!
Found numerous side quests, one of which involves inventing the electric guitar.[/spoiler:be33bce6b9]
And, it goes on and on like that. This game is unbelievably deep. Like, later on in the game, you get parts to make your mech sea worthy, and that opens up a lot of new areas. If the back of the game's case it to be believed, later on you can also fly.
So yeah, if you enjoy video games at all, you should pick this up.
BEHIND THE COUNTER! ARGH!
Fuck man, I was ten hours into the game before I found an FAQ to tell me that, and now I have a receipt that Kain won't take.
If there's one flaw with this game it's that quests can be a bit too vague. At least you can't permenently screw anything up though.
"STEAMBOT CHRONICLES! - YOU CAN BE A BAD GUY TOOOO!"
...
I put the game back in the case after 5 minutes but will probably try it again this weekend. Holy shit though, that Main Menu is one of the funniest and most awkward things of all time.
If you preordered, you get

:winky:
Wow are the controls going to take some getting too. And for some reason the trot has a hard time turning left, which is annoying as all hell.
If I only have the time/cash for one of these games which one should I get?
I'd like an answer to this question too. I've been wanting a fun sandbox-style game but the GTA's of the world don't really appeal to me.
from what I understand Steambot has more stuff to do, while Metal Saga has more hot mercenary action.
Thats about all I know, and I can't really be sure about either since I havent played enough into steambot, nor do I own Metal Saga.
So I dunno.
It does seem to start out pretty slow.
Irem's always been in business in Japan. Just games non-Japanese will never buy so they're rarely localized is their preferred genre.
Having played both, I'll say Metal Saga overall. Better story/action.
But Steambot has the larger world/open-endedness, so it's still a matter of preference. Traditional RPG VS Action RPG.
Metal Saga's definetly funnier.
