I'm using Flash CS3 and I can't remember for the life of me how to create a non-destructible object. By that, I mean an so if I have tow objects on the same layer and they are over each other, it doesn't subtract from the one underneath it if I move the overlaying shape.
Wher'es the object to turn that off? I've done it before, but can't remember how.
Problem is, I have them on separate layers, when I make them a symbol all together (they have to be together) it causes the objects to be destructible
Multiple layers within the symbol?
no, once you combine all the layers to create a symbol it's already done and destructed.
It's something you can activate before even making something a symbol, I just don't remember how.
One or both of the objects need to be made into their own symbols first before you combine them. Either that or you need to create a symbol from one layer first, and copy the other layers into it so they are each on a separate layer within the symbol.
As far as I'm aware there isn't an option to preserve all the layers when they are combined into a symbol automatically.

I know the problem you're referring to, that's as old as Flash, and I don't think it's changed.
Make a new symbol and then copy each individual object to the new symbol in separate layers instead of using convert to symbol.

okay, this idea I know will work, but I could have sworn there is an option to make them non-destructive.

I did i t dammit and I'm not on drugs! :P
The two Flash designers I know who had both been doing it for a many many years don't even know the answer to that problem. I think you might have been dreaming.
Check out the Layer Properties dialogue, if nothing in there does it then I'd say it's not possible.
That whole vector shape merging thing has been a staple of Flash and I think that's partly due to the way that shape tweening works.
