I'm going to create a simple website for someone. I have enough experience with HTML/CSS to get by on the design side; what I don't know about is hosting. How do I go about getting some web space (not much, probably < 50 MB)? I'd need domain name registration and support for some simple scripting as well.

Any recommendations/advice welcome.
I've got my site with ipower. They got a lot of bad reviews when they switched to vdeck control panel a few years ago, but now that people have adjusted to them they seem to be doing much better. I paid 30 for a "startup fee", and 30 for 3 months of hosting plus a year domain name registration and automatic sync from the domain name to the site, since it's through them. They support php, perl, cgi, and all the other bells and whistles. You get 15000 gigs of monthly traffic to boot.
60$ investment for all startup for three months plus domain for a year, afterwards it's $30 for three months. If you want to go the whole year, all inclusive, it's $99 for everything for a year.

I like godaddy.com, personally. I believe it's $9.99/year for the domain and something like $30/year for hosting.
dreamhost is very good, $10 a month if you do a year in advance, otherwise it's $11 a month. Usually no setup fee or anything. There's also LunarPages, but I know very little about them.
I haven't used it myself, but I've been hearing good things about www.nearlyfreehosting.net. Instead of a flat monthly charge, they fee based on usage. Storage space is $0.01/megabyte-month and bandwidth is $0.01/GB. I think they charge a little extra (like a cent a day or something) if you want e-mail or MySQL. The storage space seems a bit pricey if you're storing a lot of content, but it seems like it could be a good deal if it's a low-volume site without a lot of storage requirements.
I just did a search for similar threads last night, and was going to give Hole in the Wall Hosting a shot based on a recommendation there, pending the approval of the people paying for it. $10/year for 400 MB storage and 20 GB/month bandwidth seems really good, and I'd appreciate it if anyone could chime in with any opinions on it. Apparently it's run by someone over at Something Awful.
($10/year doesn't include the additional $10/year for a domain name registration, natch)
I had poor luck with the base environment on GoDaddy servers -- plus, they spam you relentlessly.
I personally use 1and1's Linux hosting -- their basic package is $4 per month with an included domain, but they're offering the Home package ($5 per month, two domains, this is the one I use) with three months for free right now.
That's 120GB of storage and 1.2TB of transfer, so, probably a bit overkill for your aims.

Yea, I've been using it and I have no complaints.
I own my domain though, so yea.

I use Bihira for a few blogs I run, they have plans as low as $2.50 a month for 2.5 gigs storage, and i think like 2.5 TB of bandwidth. They're pretty fast and reliable, and the owner is a pretty down to earth guy. Last time I created an account with them the code "DOMAIN" got a free domain registration with signup.

Why not just use Blogger or Wordpress? They're free, lots of space, more than enough bandwidth for small sites and, while not sure about Wordpress, Blogger allows you to do a lot with the code. However, if you need PHP or a database, then I guess you'll need to pay for it with the other options. I've been using Blogger with a GoDaddy purchased URL for about 8 months now and I've had no problems with it. Of course, it comes down to how "simple" a site you are making.

~$23 for 6 months of hosting.
I'm hosting a Rails app on there right now, and though occasionally I can't ssh in consistently because of the memory allocation, its a solid host.

I too had nothing but trouble from godaddy.
