Metal Gear Solid Mobile was OK... no great storyline, and it was pretty short. I think it's exclusive to Verizon (thus, not free). It has an option for first person view that uses your phones camera so you can look around/aim your gun by moving the phone. Good stuff.
The absolute best mobile phone game I've played so far is easily Doom RPG. Second best (based on time played) would be Astropop. Beyond that, the Orcs & Elves games are fun, same engine as Doom RPG (and made by id).
Mega Man 2 and God of War were both decent enough for killing time in line at the movies. The Castlevania one started promisingly, but became frustratingly difficult with keypad controls shortly thereafter.
The remake of the orignal MSX Metal Gear was great. However most of the coolest cell phone games stay rooted in the heart of Japan. I read there was a Parasite Eve sequel exclusive to Cell Phones not to mention all the FF related stuff. I don't think this will be a viable platform until Sony or Nintendo, (Maybe Apple or MS) can create an integrated platform and distrobution for cell phone gaming. Something that works great as both a phone and a game system, so none of that N Gage shit.

In all seriousness I played a version of Tetris on my Samsung that wasn't horrible so that's something.
