Despite growing sales in its SEGA games division, parent company Sega Sammy Holdings posted huge losses.
The game publishing division suffered a net loss of $505.7 million, following last year's profit of $465 million.
The company blamed high fuel costs for discouraging Japanese citizens to drive to game facilities, the success of expensive consoles that have reduced the appetite for arcades and poor sales of Pachinko game machines.
Responding to the losses, the company will turn out the lights in 110 of its 430 arcade centers, eliminate 400 jobs and outsource more of its videogame work.
Am I the only one hoping they do really well and make Dreamcast II? Not only does their loss make it even more impossible than it already is it also destroys what is left of arcades as you can see by the 110 arcades closing down. Which is something I also miss, arcades. Sega's failure hurts everyone...
Seriously this sucks, but when was the last time Sega made anything that did really well? I guess Mario and Sonic at the Olympics was a big deal as far as sales numbers.
I feel for the Japanese decline of arcades, because we went through that in NA years ago, and it sucks.
This is the better question. It sounds as though the answer MAY be yes, though it would be helpful if there was a division-by-division breakdown of anticipated revenues.

To me it sounds like the main culprit for the losses was the arcade division. I mean

the company itself seems to say that since people aren't as interested in arcades and Pachinko (whassat?), that's the reason they got the losses.
It always amazes me (mostly because I know zilch about companies operating in the red) how a company like sega, or even EA can lose this much money and still be, well, in business.
So this is really a problem with the arcade/pachinko market more than their games division and everyone claiming console gaming death in the thread is clueless or am I reading something wrong?

Half a billion bucks does seem like it's beyond Sega's means.
Hate to nit-pick, but shouldn't this be in the video game sales thread, where the whole focus is to talk numbers? The OP should post there and we can continue the discussion proper.

It's not that they actually lost the money, because that implies that they had it to begin with. It's more like, there was a $505 million deficit between what they assumed they'd make, and what they actually made.

I think people saying that the console games industry are joking, because any time that there is an equivalent loss made by a PC dev, there are always doomsayers saying stuff like "PC gaming is dead"

The problem here wasn't that Sega didn't make any great games this year. The problem is that Sammy spent lots of money on Pachinko and Arcade, and who gives a toss about them these days?
I cared about Sega. I love my Genesis. I love almost all of the games I own for it. I love my Saturn and my Dreamcast, too. But the old Sega and the new Sega are totally different. I want to take the physical incarnation of the Sega corporation and throw it in a lake of fire.
Just last week I bailed out of the absolute shithole that is Gameworks, which is part of the SEGA Sammy Holdings family. It's been in a good tailspin all by it self this past year, I'd love to see what affect this news will have on the store. That and a brand new, massive Legoland is opening up right next door, poised to scoop up at least 10-20% of Gameworks' event business, if not more. I'm going to have to keep in touch with some of the Gameworks people and see what happens in the next months.
They better start putting out some good fucking games.
actually, once you leave the huge metropolitan areas, the only way to get to those massive arcades and pachinko halls they have in the surburbs and countryside is drive.
i can easily see how high fuel costs act as a disincentive. remember, gas costs about 2-3 times as much in japan as in the u.s. (right now, i think it's about $1.50 - $2 per liter), which means about $8 per gallon.
Yeah, and that is what cost them 505 million. Must be a hell of a game.
Hmm let's see, if every character had a unique voice, if you could enter every building, a good physics system, all of Hong Kong mapped, cameo voice appearences by major Hong Kong stars....one can dream right?

Gameworks WOULD be good if they didn't have the sound off on all the good games. WTF.
Sounds like your Gameworks might benefit from Legoland runoff though, if anything.

I liked Viking: Battle for Asgard.....
This sucks so bad. I hope Sonic Unleashed turns out good and ends up giving them some much needed cash.
Sega Genesis NEVAR FORGET

Heads between legs, boys, kiss it goodbye!

It's cool if you like them, but they're not going to win any awards. Unless the award is "Worst game of the year."

So the fact that game sales have set a new record every year for three consecutive years must just be deceptive somehow, yeah?

Yes. It's all doomed. Abandon hope.
It could happen.

It's net profit. They fell short by $505,000,000 dollars that they expected to make.
