Another thread that just popped up on the board got me to thinking about this one.
Ever run into a game that you felt should be right up your street. As in, ticks all the right boxes to suit your gaming tastes, has you psyched for it's release and by all logical reasoning and 3rd party accounts should be gaming nirvana. Yet when you get to play it.. it just doesn't click.
For me one such game is Beyond Good and Evil. I was psyched for it's release. It had all the features I love in a game and which are in the games I love. It even gets massive praise for it's storyline and gameplay from just about everyone who has played it, to the point of being regarded as a cult gaming gem. Yet, when I got down to playing I just couldn't enjoy it and spent most of my time convincing myself that any minute it would unleash it's awesome and my effort would be rewarded.
In the end I got about two thirds of the way through before the inevitable happened and I conceded defeat, completely bemused as to what had gone so wrong and why it just didn't work for me. Disappointing and completely bemusing.
Anyone encountered the same thing and if so what game was it?

Same thing, same game, although I wasn't psyched for its release or anything. I bought the Gamecube version because it was relatively rare and highly recommended by forumers here. I played all the way through it but it just didn't do it for me.
My contribution: Metal Gear Solid (or any game with stealth parts). Just can't get into them. Fuck, even the stealth parts in Wind Waker annoyed me. I just couldn't wait to be done with them.
I find myself feeling that way about Dead Rising. Sandboxy? awesome. Shit-ton of weapons? super cool. Splattering Zombies? WOOO HOO! Unlockables and other splattery goodness?
But I got it, and I still haven't played past the first day. I've restarted a few times to up my character level, and it's not like I'm really having any difficulty (aside from the bastard convicts in the jeep with the machine gun), but I just can't seem to find the spark that drives me to complete it. I'll pick it up from time to time and kill some zombies and gain a level here and there, but I haven't felt the urge to actually do anything with the story. I usually end up putting it down after about 20 minutes. Maybe it's because Frank runs like he has a broom stick shoved up his nether regions, but that's never stopped me from enjoying a game like this before. For some reason it just doesn't seem to click with me even though it has all kinds of elements to it that I think are damn cool.
Maybe I'm just missing something.

This isn't a dig at you, but everytime I hear someone say they can't get into Metal Gear, I honestly feel bad for them. It's such an amazing series that I wish everyone could experience it and love it like I do.
Game I couldn't get into? KoToR. Oh man how I wanted to. I tried so hard, but I just couldn't get past the combat. I know Bioware weaves awesome stories - Jade Empire and especially Mass Effect taught me that, but the combat was so unfun that I couldn't continue.

I really really really don't like the MGS gameplay. I can't get into it at all. And it's not even the stealth-action thing. I just don't like it for some reason.
But I love the MGS story.
So I slog through the game like it's a job so I can watch the cutscenes.

I love everything about MGS - the gameplay AND the stories.
Even the game in the series which I like the least - MGS2 - has an incredible story and steller gameplay. To me, it feels a lot like a Zelda game, only set in modern times and with guns instead of swords.
Alpha Centauri/Civilization type games. I love history, I love micro-managing, and I love watching my characters/whatever mature over time and develop into something awesome.
But I just can't get into them, which makes me really sad.

From what I hear, the game has an incredible (and politically motivated) story. I love the art design, and heard the amazing soundtrack whenever my friends played it.
This doesn't change the fuck that I suck at strategy RPGs though.

I mean, it's not for lack of trying. I've played MGS, MGS:TTS, 2, 3, AC!D... I feel like I've given them enough tries. Maybe there's something wrong with me.

Most likely. I think you should see a doctorb (the b is for bargain)
I'm going to get lynched for this, but... Bioshock.
Fantastic atmosphere, story, graphics, concept. And I kept waiting to get absolutely swept up in the whole experience. Didn't happen. I was never compelled or even excited to boot up the game to see what happened next. It just felt like a chore playing it. Can't explain why.

Man, as much as I hate to admit it, I am in the same boat. I mean, HL2 is great. I can't think of anything about the game that I wouldn't like, but I always just get bored with it for some reason. It makes me feel like an impotent old man. Like, I should really be into this girl. She's hotter than hell, and ready to go. But for some reason, I just can't get it up.
I feel the same way about God of War. I love the atmosphere. The gameplay is pretty damn cool. The game oozes "badass" but for some reason, I just can't get into it.

Yeah dude something is wrong with you, the games on that list are people's all time favorite games. The only one I agree with is ff7...I don't know why, it didn't grab me like ff8. Maybe it was because I played 8 and 9 first.
Also I agree with the above post of Master of Orion 3. I was a later comer to master of orion 2, and even then it was an amazing game that I was able to play on my now deceased shitty laptop. But when I first played number 3 a little piece of me cried and then stabbed itself.
I mean i loaded it up, the interface was kinda cool and shiny and it was a bit overwhelming, but I was like well cool I guess this will be fun. Then I got into combat and just spat at my monitor!

Resident Evil:4 for me. I mean, I loved RE:2 when I played it years ago, and a game in that series with decent controls? sign me up! But, no. I don't know why I just can't get into that game so it's just sitting on my shelf. I know I should go back and just do it, but I just don't feel compelled to. Oh, also Twilight Princess. I love me some Zelda games. I bought a Gamecube years ago for TP (before it got delayed... and then delayed again), but after doing the first three temples I just didn't really feel like going on.
Oh, here's another one. Earthbound. I mean, I didn't hate it, and I was able to finish it, I just don't get why it's so highly regarded.
The story, I get it. Post modernism. Boy oh boy do I get it. I love the movement. It had a great story.
But as a game it wasn't that fun. Compared to other RPGs out at the time - Final Fantasy 6, Shining Force II, Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star IV, Ys I & II, Lunar SS & EB... it felt ten steps behind.

You know what bothered me about RE4? The controls. I tried playing the Gamecube version, and the controls completely irked me.
I then played the Wii version, and the game totally clicked for me. However, I still have to beat it. Anyhow, that's my story about RE4.
I've tried and tried; but I hate MGS and GTA games.
They're not for me.
But, that's okay - it's not like I get excited for the next installment(s) of these games.
But; I was mad stoked for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, got it... and... I don't know... I unlocked a bunch of shit; but, I'm just not digging it like I did Melee. Maybe it's just a touch too much of the same.
Oh man, Metroid Prime 2. I thought the first game was OK, and luckily I was able to pick up the second at a really good price. I've tried playing it twice now, and I can't get past the first 2-3 hours without quitting. I don't know what it is; I absolutely love the 2D Metroids (I've beaten Fusion and Zero Mission probably at least 5 times each, and played through Super Metroid 3-4 times). I even think they nailed the atmosphere in the Prime games. Maybe it's the lack of mobility.
Everyone knows why MoO3 was supposed to be the coolest thing ever.
And wasn't.
Actually, I've never heard of that game. I'll go flog myself.
Oh my God.
Ok, go play Master of Orion.
then play Master of Orion two.
Then read up on everything concerning Master of Orion Three in previews and dev interviews.
Look at the way it looks like it'll shape up.
Then play it.
you'll understand.
Or he could skip all those steps and instead, just go buy a delicious cake and eat it. Then go buy another delicious cake but instead put like, M&Ms or something on it. Then buy another delicious looking cake, but have it made with shit on the inside.
I've tried and tried; but I hate MGS and GTA games.

Yeah, that's what got me about Brawl. I felt like it was just the same game on a new system. Just not my cup of tea. I understand why people would love it though.

Military shooters. I don't know why. I just don't care about them.
I've played a couple of moh and quite enjoyed them but gave up about halfway through.
About the only military style game I've really enjoyed is Chuck Yeager's Air Combat. I played that game for most of high school, because it could be easily installed on (almost) any computer in any school/boarding school. And also, it was neat.
It's weird though, because put even a tiny sci fi edge on an otherwise straight military shooter and I'm all over it. But plain vanilla "realism"? Not interested.

I said it before and I'll say it again: Odin Sphere.
2D scrolling action-RPG, superb sprite-based 2D art, good music, what I've seen of the story is good...
And yet I hate the game with a deep passion. I ahte the controls, I hate how the combat works, I hate the difficulty which is completely unbalanced. The game just drives me nuts. Also, it's EXTREMELY repetitive. Explore 20 thousands circles until you reach the boss, rinse and repeat.
I've tried and tried; but I hate MGS and GTA games.
They're not for me.

Dude, I couldn't stand GTA III, VC, SA, LCS, or VCS. I tried them all, thinking maybe I was missing the point. Nope, I didn't like them.
Much like my complaint about KoToR - I felt they had an amazing setting, good stories, and an incredible sense of detail... but the gameplay was terrible. Every single thing done in the game felt like a cheap knock off of something else. Like, it felt like a bunch of other games poorly copied and thrown together. For example, you could play in a cab, but it wasn't as refined as Crazy Taxi. It felt like quantity, not quality.
But then, I bit the bullet and tried GTAIV. Oh man, complete 180. We're talking the exact opposite. I suggest you give it a try - at least rent it, and I say this coming as a staunch GTA hater. It's a phenominal game.

I played most of the gta games through once then never wanted to again. I played sa twice just because there was so much to do though, and I had time to kill that holiday.
IV I just want to boot up and walk around without acheiving any gameplay objectives. It's unbelievable what this company has managed to pull out their ass, if you look at their previous games.

Or he could skip all those steps and instead, just go buy a delicious cake and eat it. Then go buy another delicious cake but instead put like, M&Ms or something on it. Then buy another delicious looking cake, but have it made with shit on the inside.
Yeah, that's what got me about Brawl. I felt like it was just the same game on a new system. Just not my cup of tea. I understand why people would love it though.
IV I just want to boot up and walk around without acheiving any gameplay objectives. It's unbelievable what this company has managed to pull out their ass, if you look at their previous games.
