Can I be a warrior dwarf who also engraves on the side? Because that would be awesome! I would not so much engrave the walls, but paint them ... with the blood of the enemies I smote.
You have become Sorcy Bornhammer leader of a melee squad! And what of the autumn update? More goblins!
Xtarath's Journal, 17th of Limestone, 1055
Curse these damn goblins! After my squad and I took care of some hammermen, the Spearmaster Ngokang Mysterywitches, has lead a squad of bowmen on to our stream! Since Sorcy and the rest of our army back the fort, it would be suicide to try and take them down.
In other news I am longer the mayor, wanting to focus the military on the upcoming sieges. A low ranking but well liked dwarf in Sorcy's squad has become the new mayor. Our longtime engineer is taken by a mood and I don't have hope for his survival.
The merchants are almost here and our legendary recordkeeper and captain of the guard is meeting with them. Our magma pet pit is working, whenever the butchers get too tired. I also have plans for somekind of arena/prison complex to keep captured goblins in, since I am well respected among Frozen Deeps.
I fear no goblin, but I only hope that I can capture some of them for use.
Titmouse, is saying things about some kind of gospel or something, and is obsessed with making goblets.
ohhh... someone is going to choose... poorly
When I get around to it I should make some sort of trap room for all them goblets.
Xtarath's journal, 15th of Moonstone, 1055
The mechanic who withdrew from society got locked up in his room because he was crazy, just now died. 2 goblin bow ambushes came and are currently firing hundreds of arrows at our kittens.
I will now divulge the plans for the prison complex in case I do not live to see it finished. It is a 20 by 20 foot room, that will have multiple levels. There will be varying levels of channels on the floors where we will dump the prisoners down. Meaning that there might be channels all the way to the bottom, or to any level.
On each level there will be something to test the prisoners from a water maze to alternating magma pipes. Now it will only be until we capture something until my plan is put into action.
Other than that not much is happening in the fort, Sorcy had a close call with the goblins, but made it out unscratched.

Aaaaaaaaarrrrrrhhhh... let me at 'em! I will rip out their spines and use them as brushes to create my new masterpiece: "Smashing of the Goblins, in Goblin Blood and bile".
I have a dwarf specifically labelled "kitten murderer".
He murders kittens.
That is his only function.
[edit] He started as a peasant, but having just checked, he's now become a competant butcher. If the numbers on the dwarf fortress wiki are accurate, that means he's murdered a minimum of 60 kittens.
Yay Soal... lead them dwarves in the alternate reality to victory! or death... either way it won't effect my reality until it becomes my reality at which time I may curse you... but there will probably be enough people who've mucked it up between now and then that when I muck it up it won't really be that bad. :winky:

Hey, Xtarath if you're still taking names, make me a migrant soapmaker. Or a military dorf.
Of course, if the next migrant wave doesn't bring a soapmaker, I'll give you one of the military soap maker.
I've been messing around in adverture mode, sometimes with hilarious results.
One instance as a marksdwarf with my two human drunk meat shields. On the outskirts of the goblin fortress we saw a demon and managed to take him down, but later got killed by some foul blendecs. I'm considering writing a short story about it because it was so awesome.
Another time lead to a sneaking dwarf axe killer who snuck about the fort killing goblins and taking their lopped off body parts to throw at other goblins. Then I died from a wandering hammerlord.
# As I stated a while ago, I've been putting off weekends until now so that I can have a fair chunk of time at the end of the month to work on the weekend project without switching gears so often. If you consider this schedule vs. the normal work-week schedule, you'll see DF hasn't been slowed at all (if anything, more DF days in a row helps), but I know some of you are disappointed, so I've hand-made some little presents today, like being able to place multiple constructions via rectangles, being able to select all of the required building materials from one list entry with a single command (so you can select 30 granite at once, though there are no general categories like 'stone' or 'any' yet), dump/melt/hide from 'd', 'hide' from everywhere you can forbid/dump/melt (including being able to hide buildings), forbid/dump/melt/hide right-side unexpanded groups in Stores, and a bit of cursor persistence stuff somebody requested for the Stores screen as well (at least partially). Unfortunately, you won't get your presents until next month. I suppose it's kind of crappy of me to spoil what they are before you've even received them, but it's not like they were going to be wrapped anyway. My next entry here will be at the beginning of July.

Excited much? I very much wish for the ability to choose the material for each job order... not just constructions. Wasting felsite to get my stonecrafter up to legendary? Yes please. Conserving various materials for later use? Yes please.
oh, and hide? like... it doesn't show up in lists anymore? I don't know that I'd use that. But adding dump/melt/forbid to the 'd' screen? Yes please.

I think it'll fall into the chasm. At least, I'm pretty sure the sarcophagus will make it, not sure about the rest of the room. I made sure to place it in the right spot to drop right down into it.

That got taken out with the 3D update, as now you can end up in areas that are totally light stone/dark stone. You might still be able to fiddle with it if you mess with what's allowed on the Stones menu, but I've never tried.
1) Forbid all stone, then un-forbid whatever you want stuff built out of.
2) Make a stockpile next to the workshop that only accepts stone you want stuff built out of.
Option 2 is not idiot proof, while masons tend to pick up stone from the closest stockpile, there is no guarantee that they will. Sometimes they'll run halfway across the map to get a rock they absolutley must make a chair out of.
I'm pretty sure they go for the most recent stone created, so if you've got a mining operation halfway across the fortress your masons will run all the way over there to get the new stone and ignore the stone stockpile right next to them.
Also put the save up on the wiki so go get it TheKoolEagle.

I want to say this used to happen but has been fixed. My masons and stonecrafters clear a nice area around them.
They calculate paths after they pick their stone, though, so when they pick the 'closest' stone, they don't take walls, floors, or ceilings into account, and if there is a rock above or below them, or on the other side of a wall, they might have to run around the entire fortress to get it. Even though there's a rock like four spaces away with a direct path open. You can temporarily forbid rocks that are physically close but have long paths to them to get around this.
Also, here's a question: I've seen the 'take from stockpile' phrase floating around in some workshop related menus... what is it? Is there any chance that I can somehow use it to melt everything in a specific stockpile?
damn talk about timing! sorry if you guys have been waiting on my contribution to the bloodline game, i haven't had internet for a week and i've been moving into a new place, on top of that i've been working 12 hours a day!
at least one of those things gets fixed later today so i'll actually be online more, but i'll try to get it going asap

I believe that's one stockpile taking from another... So you could have one main stockpile containing the bulk of your supplies, and a smaller one (perhaps, close to the workshop) set to take from the main one.
light / dark / etc stone was removed because eleventy billion new stone types were added.
The only reliable way is to create a stockpile of the stone in question RIGHT NEXT to the workshop
Alternatively... right above or below the workshop. Ever since Ironhold started I've been obsessed with putting stockpiles directly above/below the workshop in question. It just looks so clean and tidy.

I just got into this game. I'm in my first summer, and after reading all the help, I've got trained war dogs, a bed for every dwarf (assigned even), farm lands, and I'm almost to the river to the east. I was just going to syphon off the shallow lake outside the fortress, but it dried up before I could use it.
However, I've come under my very first attack in the game. I've been set upon by a troupe of macaques. I stopped for the night right when I first noticed them sitting right outside the door... I have an Axedwarf and 2 war dogs. I wonder how I will fare.
I have to say that this might be one of the most impressive pieces of software I've ever seen. While, I can agree that the current implementation is more than adequate, I think this would be the next big thing if a very basic, but comprehensive tileset (Mayday or some derivation) along with a modern UI (true mouse support and context sensitive actions) ever get developed for this thing. I think most developers would lose the will to code. It's got everything to change entertainment software: technical excellence, humor, addictiveness, perfect gameplay and most of all a paradigm shift such that it's actually favorable to lose. I can't think of a game that rewards failure as wonderfully as this game does. Being able to explore your failed fortress is just genius.
Right now, I'm using Mayday tileset, but I'll probably lose that once I get familiar enough with how things work. Straight ascii was just too intimidating, and combined with the lack of the mouse, highlighting every single thing in the game wondering what it was became a little tiresome for me. (I know that that is pathetic).
