Another new player here. I played the game for the first time last night with a printout from the wiki in hand. It took me 4 hours to build my pitiful fortress. While I still only have a vague idea of what I'm doing, it is a lot of fun.
My dwarves were all thirsty and I panicked. I had my dwarves dig out a tunnel to a pool which promptly flooded the dining room. That didn't help at all. Just muddied up the room and added a few fish carcasses. I'll have to figure out how to make refreshing drinks later tonight.
The macaque attack (macattack?) was soundly put down with no dwarf or war dog injuries or casualties. I'm currently trying to tame a couple of the stragglers. I thought that when people were talking about blood and body parts flying all over the screen, they were using artistic license. I was wrong. I now need to find uses for the lower body of a rhesus macaque.
This game is so good. I guess I need to move my storage inside.
That's the first thing I do now, every time, even if it's just to a temporary place (though food storage is the first area I dig out with my current designs, usually). It helps to keep the food and seeds safe and less prone to rot, prevents bones and shells (which I have in a seperate refuse pile, always) from being lost on season changes and keeps the rhesus macaque raids and thieves from getting anything.
My dwarves like freshly baked rhesus macaque meat muffins, made with finely minced rhesus macaque meat, plump helmets and dwarven ale.
I guess you can't collect rhesus remains. Are you raising macaques for slaughter? On accident, I discovered that both of my wardogs are covered in monkey blood. Is there any way to give them a bath or should I embrace their bloodcoats?
Embrace the bloodcoat. It's not DF if everyone is clean and shiny.
I think you have to butcher creatures for them to be edible. I'm not sure if you can butcher corpses since my butcher is usually busy slaughtering kittens, but if you can you would have to give the order from a butchery and the time until meat rots (and is no longer butcherable) is pretty short.
Edit: Actually you must be able to butcher corpses because you can have hunters...but I never use them.
So I'm a couple years in with no military. I have some "pre-recruits" smoothing the world to get some meat on them bones, but I'm still trying to find my hidden magma vent ;/ The magmas, I hunger for them.
My front gate is very defensible (though low on traps) and my dogs seem to be fucking the shit out of each other, generating moar dogs and I've got lots of War Animal training going on.... but I'm worried that a siege will doom me or at least pin me down for a good year though ;( My map area is big, is there any way to use Prospector or something after you've Embarked?
Go to the utilities page in the wiki and download tweak. You should be able to run reveal, which will show you magma, cave rivers, and, in places you've mined or places that started visible, what type of stone is there.
(Because reveal's changes are permanent, save first, then load your game, run reveal, make a note of everything, and then kill dwafort.exe)

Hey SoaL? How's it coming? I keep looking every 6 hours or so. If you're spending this much time on it, it better be darned funny! Unless you're not spending time on it... and you're just loafing around playing other games or something, then just post what you've got so at least I'm not in suspense :P

Okay, I'm officially addicted. I have Ninja Gaiden 2 to finish on Mentor, but I can't tear myself away from this game. It's totally brilliant. I'm up to 60 dwarves so far, and I've been waiting for a siege or something. The most I've had to contend with is a pack of pissed off horses.
Anyone with Animal Caretaker active will try to heal the animal, but for yellow or worse probably won't. It may heal on its own, but will probably just limp around sadly for the rest of its life.
That's why I toss injured pets into the nearest magma vent. The flashing icon of an injured creature is annoying, and it's not like there's a penalty for killing off an unclaimed animal.

Perhaps not in the game itself, but maybe in your soul. My Hunters are going through the canines pretty well. I guess I need to look into this situation. Perhaps doubling up on the doggies.

Ok, I've been trying to figure this out for quite awhile now... How the fetch do you get a tamed critter out of a cage? I've tried selecting the cage, and selecting the critter and picking 'dump'. I've tried making a pit and selecting the creature -in- the cage to dump into the pit... I've tried numerous other things...
The only success i've had is one time I accidentally ran out of food and a captured turtle got eaten out of a cage.
But I bought a tame cougar from the elves and I -really- wanna chain it somewhere impressive. Anyone? Anyone?

I've been getting sidetracked.
I've written a bunch of it, I'll try to do as much as I can tomorrow and then post whatever is done for then and add to it as I do it.

Poop the chain out somewhere and assign the cougar to it. If you can't, free the cougar from the cage first via the cage's menu.
Uh... the cage has a menu? I've tried all the options on the cage that I can see and can't find anything to free the creature.
Have you 'b'uilt the cage? I don't think you can access menu options until you build it. Then use 'q'uery.
Beware though, for dorfs are stupid and often accidentally let the animal out of the cage while carrying it over to where it's going to be built. I think that problem is going to be fixed in the next version.
EDIT: Oh, it seems you have already built it. No idea then. When it's built, you *should* be able to 'q'uery and then 'a'ssign, then hit enter to select animals for removal. If that doesn't work, then I have no idea. ( http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Cage )

Ahh, you see, I -hadn't- built it... and in fact did not know it was even possible to -build- a cage other than a cage trap. Silly me. Now I have cougars and Cows and Horses roaming freely in my fortress, yay! Soon we will have a baby explosion and a feast! woohoo.
And I also have a small zoo set up with a bluejay and a bat. Time to add some more critters.

24 hours means I can double post, yes? In any case, I built the cages, and rescued the lonely doggies... and then put all of my puppies in them until they become dogs, so I don't have to see them wandering around... and uh.. oh, cougar guard cat doesn't do all that great of a job, 6 Macaques got by with various damaged clothing... go figure. So now there are war dogs chained on both sides of the doors in my fortifications. Hopefully that will stop intruders for at least a year or so.

07/02/2008: 115. I was testing some adventure mode conversation responses in a human town. The high priest of the god of revenge came down the stairs, and he was an elf with a human name. I talked to him and learned that both of his parents had goblin names, and his grandparents had elven names. So I guessed that his grandparents had been abducted and that the humans had then liberated the tower, placing the goblin-named parents under human control before they had their child. This was more or less correct, but a bit more happened.
So, way back when, the demon was causing all sorts of trouble, fighting both the humans and the elves and destroying their cities. This went on for 40 years -- an elf managed to tear off the demon's nose about halfway through this rampage, but he couldn't finish the job because he had lost a limb in the fight before the nose-removal and lost the rest of his limbs afterward, prior to being burned to death. Eventually the demon was shot in the year 45 and the humans took over the goblin tower. Many of the goblins fled into the mountains, and others were enslaved, including some of their abductees.
Ngoso and Bax were a couple of elven children born to abducted parents that were left alone to live in the goblin tower under their new human rulers. When they grew up, they both started shops -- The Enjoyable Paddle and the Lessened Healer -- in the year 45, and in the year 54 they both moved to the human town of Beersreined. The next year they were married and they both decided to wander the wilds looking for monsters to killed (they never found any, as the giants were off on the other side of the world and the dragon was dead). Ngoso had ten children in Beersreined, the third of which became the high priest of the god of revenge after both he and his father were converted by the new temple in 146. Ngoso never converted as she had become a dragon worshipper during one of the attacks prior to its death.
As a sidenote, the elves and the humans didn't get along very well, and in the year 60 the elves actually drove the humans out of the goblin tower they had conquered. The elves had no desire to live in a goblin tower so they left it abandoned. At this point, the goblin refugees that had been wandering through the mountains for fifteen years reclaimed the tower. They held it for a total of two years before being defeated by the humans again, who were then able to maintain control of the site until play began. I didn't check if any of the goblins managed to escape again.
I can't wait untill I can slaughter a dragon god and all his worshipers.
The fortress is arguably self-sustaining. I can completely buy out every caravan that comes along with all of the Legendary crafters I have, and I have a pretty sizeable military and fortress guard. So, I'm trying out some extra-curricular activities. First up is the moat. I get my miners out there to dig some trenches, and they all start throwing up. I guess they can't stomach either the sunlight or digging in that disgusting brown stuff... Soil, I think it's callled.
Either way, my miners are throwing up all over my stone stockpiles.
This spawns an inspiration, so I install 3 catapults in my stone stockpiles. The eventual Goblin Sieges will be met with torrents of vomit-boulders blackening out the sun.

"Ahh, so we will fight in the shade ?"
Or in toady-one speak, does the area under the boulders in flight now flag as 'indoors', now making it a farmable plot and makes the dwarves NOT throw up?

Is it bad or good that I know exactly what you're trying to say?
On a zombie note, how do I actually get dwarf companion to run while I'm playing the game? I have python 2.5, the windows installer, and companion itself.
When I try to run the df_companion prototype, it says libglib-2.0.0.dll was not found.

Wow.
A day took only two hours.
Of course, the decision of what to do with one hundred fifty points took six.
I went with a safety cushion of dogs and cats.
2 hours for one day? Were you paused for... 2 hours?
