    Halp plz.

So, I'm attempting to dig near a magma pipe to get around an aquifer, in order to drain the aquifer into an open area that would make it evaporate due to it being spread so thin. So, I get a nice stairwell going, and all of a sudden, the aquifer floods all floors below it, which really sucks. I thought aquifers only spread for as much as you uncovered of it.

Oh, i didn't realize that water actually seeps in from the surrounding rock either, which causes it to flood anything beneath it. That is no good. I gave up on the fortress though after burning the dwarves alive with magma. It was breath-taking.

You should have left one dwarf alive... so the event could be immortalized on an artifact.

"This is a Porcelain throne. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. This object menaces with spikes of marble and rock crystal. On the item is an image of dwarves in cat leather. The dwarves are burning."

Man, been a while since I got this far in the game. How do I get my manager to do his job? I've assigned the job to a peasant, and he's got the basic office, but he's just sitting around doing nothing.

Edit: just as I post this, he starts working. Stupid dorfs.

Some nobles do useful things, particularly the ones you appoint yourself.

I was forced to flood my prison block with lava.

My hammerer is out of work.

Nobody kills my dorfs but me.

I'm planning on building a fortress more or less like so:
    OOOO###OOOO
    OOOO###OOOO
    OOOO###OOOO
    #####X#####
    ####X#X####
    #####X#####
    OOOO###OOOO
    OOOO###OOOO
    OOOO###OOOO

    # = walkway
    O = open space
    X = up/downcases

where I have a waterfall going down through the open spaces and the walkways lead to everything on that level of the fortress. So I'd have a few apartment levels, a farm level, industrial levels, et cetera. I'm a bit concerned about filling up the channels with water, though. I'm sure I could build glass walls along the walkways, but I really would like these levels to go all the way down from the water's source to the bottom of the mountain, and that sort of means there's no place for the water to go from there. If I have it falling down in four waterfalls from the surface, is the water going to fill everything up below?

Yes, however, You could just tunnel it to the map edge and then let it go off. I've never done it, but I imagine it's possible. If not, just set up a floodgate situation and gate off the waterfalls once they reach a certain depth in each section. Then you can make pumps that pump water down from the bottom up to the top to reflow in an endless cycle.

Also, keep in mind that waterfalls tend to rob you of your processing power.

Correction: This entire game robs you of your processing power.

Four, 4x3 waterfalls? Is there an ocean nearby to supply that waterfall? Also, you can't mine on the edge of a zone, so you would have to channel it to a bottomless chasm, or to an existing river for it all to exit.

Channeling it to a chasm that had a bottom would be... interesting. Biggest, reservoir, ever.

I tried that once, just to see if there was an easter egg for spawning evil underground sea monsters. Dug a 20x20 chunk out from surface level all the way to the very bottom, and filled it with water.

    Nothing happened. :(

It was fairly early on in my DF career, and I wasn't clear on how demons worked so I was under the assumption that digging as deep as possible would trigger them.

Ugh, so slow. My mechanic has to hook up two doors, ten floodgates, and twenty hatch covers to levers. The rest of my fort is on stone-hauling duty while he works. :(

Note about the bins trading thing: You can haul all your stuff to the depot IN bins then just select the individual items to trade. Make the damn elves carry the stuff away 1 at a time and keep the bins for yourself.

That's what I did... turns out there's still a bug in the game. The traders brought bins with them, and those I didn't buy they took back home with them. The mayor didn't like that. :|

yes, but while they are stone hauling, the possibilities of ANYTHING happening are ENDLESS!

You entire fort could collapse because of some homicidal dwarfiac who gets it in his head that, "I'm unhappy. What's the nearest object I can punt? Oh, this cat will work!" causing the cat's owner to go apeshit and kill everyone else.

Way back before things went 3d, the chasm was a spawning point for ratmen, antmen, and the like. You could prompt mini-invasions by using it as a dump. Or kill them off by building a lava channel to the edge.

This give me an idea for a magma waterfall...

Actually I could make a magma moat with a lot of effort since my fort looks a little like this.

    gggbbbggg

    g is ground.

    b is the bridge.

Nirurkizbiz - "The Unseen Deer" Obsidian Bracelet.

I've tried to put Nirurkizbiz into search, bracelet into search, and unseen into search, but it never comes up at my depot. How do I trade it?

Going to have to scrounge up some money to donate, I think. Pretty sure Toady would rather be implementing some insane feature rather than work on interface improvements, but he does it anyway.

    YES.

Looks like I'm gonig to ahve to donate another $15 next release. I'm really digging the notes on adventurer skills and party organization as well; moving closer to seamless switchign between adventure mode and fortress mode, especially once Toady sets how sending out squads and alternating between sites works.
