The problem with succession games seems to always be with the waiting list; the longer the worse it becomes. People sign up not knowing whether they'll be free the next week, let alone next month.
I'd suggest doing away with the list entirely, let people sign up as the next player in a first-come first-serve manner.

I don't think they even teach multiplication in schools anymore. They just talk about how each student feels about numbers, and then make a collage for the end of the trimester.
"This is a superior-quality numbers collage. It is decorated with masterfully-crafted construction paper and glitter paint. On the collage is an image of some numbers and some numbers. The numbers are arguing with the numbers."
Hey, I calculated that stuff myself before I found that utility, I'm just trying to save others time. Of course it took me an hour to do it on my own...
edit: Uhhh... is the site finder broken in 0.28.181.39f? It seems unable to find magma pipes, even if that's the only criterion set.

First goblin siege in my new fort. I really should pick more defensible locations. I am pretty much vunerable to attack at any angle. They killed over half my dorfs

Oh it was. Especially when my legendary engraver fucked up a ton of goblins in plate mail with a steel shield and a masterwork obsidian sword.
Does anyone know a way to just dump everything that starts with "narrow" so I can get rid of all this extra goblin crap?
but it's so so so very valuable. to dwarves and humans anyway. I believe some new methods for managing stock were added recently, but I haven't had a chance to play with it much at all, just look at the new widescreen[tm] format and marvel at its beauty.

Agreed, I sell it if it's leather or melt it if it's metal, but I usually just make "unusable" armor and finished good stockpiles. Once you've done that and your dwarfs are done dragging everything around you can mass designate things for dumping/melting.
I removed all clothing (not armor) from goblins and kobolds via the raws. It makes the game way more enjoyable for me. Humans however, still wear all their clothes so when they show up in a siege I still have to dump it all.
As for how valuable the clothing is, there are too many other things to create and trade for that to even be an issue.
The secret to calculating you window size and tile counts:
Go to your df/data/art folder and right click on the bitmap for your tileset, check properties and look at the summary tab. It'll have the dimensions of your image. Divide these numbers by 16, that's your tile size (the image is composed of 256 squares, 16 rows and 16 columns, divide pixels by tiles, you get the tile size).
Right click on your desktop and select properties. In the settings tab, note the numbers of your screen resolution. Divide each of these numbers by your tile size. If they do not divide evenly, reduce the resolution until it does divide evenly.
All done, these two numbers are the numbers you plug into the 'grid' option in init.txt, and you did it all with your very own 3rd grade math skills!
My current fort got so many immigrants so early, I don't even know what to do with all my mans. My mining is waaay ahead of schedule, I'm thinking about digging an underground road across the entire map that will spit out in front of my base for easier wagon access; last season some tree growth hemmed out the dwarven wagons ;p
I enabled the showing of magma pipes in the .init file, but where am I supposed to see them?
You will see them on the embark screen, but you will still need to dig for them once you arrive. I generally try to position my magma somewhere memorable, like a corner of the space or something so I have some clues for where to start hunting for it.

Yea, this has been a rough week for me to try to get on Ironhold, but I will have it run through soon.
Question though, should I move to the new version or is there any reason to stick with the old version?
Ugh, I'm waaay too picky about locations. I'm obsessed with finding a smaller than 5x5 site that has a magma pipe, underground river, chasm/bottomless pit, no really large cliffs or elevation changes, and preferably sand. On top of that I need to think it looks aesthetically pleasing once I actually get there. Someone save me from myself
Since I've been making so many worlds I've noticed something odd, I haven't seen any tropical or arctic areas since I updated. Is it just me or is anyone else seeing that?
I'm pretty much through with saving embark profiles. I had to generalize some of the item txt file handling for the embark profile files, so there will be the added benefit of allowing item corpses and the reaction raws to use more item types, from plants to bones to extracts etc. Corpses and their pieces as well as prepared food, being more complicated objects, are still not properly supported.
It means you can save what you normally bring, so you don't have to keep selecting every type of cheap meat and seed every time you start a new fort. Yay!
You know what's funny? When that immigrant fisherdwarf you don't give a crap about decides to fish in the two tile pond next to the open magma vent. Predictably, an imp spots the moron and burns him right up, setting half the map on fire.
What's not funny: despite forbidding everything, a legendary stonecrafter, who does not have a single job active other than stone crafting - not even burial or health care - decides to walk over to the burning corpse in the middle of a burning field. I have no idea what she was after, since she had 'no job' and even ordering all dwarves inside didn't make her turn around (I spotted her leaving my fort early, and I should have drafter her but didn't).
Well, the same imp punished her and her baby for her stupidity. Unfortunately, her other child was tagging along a couple screens away, and as she lay in the field slowly burning to death (the imp had lost interest after she fell unconcious) her child comes over and gets killed by the same imp. Fortunately, that imp was no more, since it's exploding fireballs apparently killed it when it killed the child.
So I forbid all the dwarf corpses and bones until the raging fire goes out, and everything will be okay, right? Oops, I forgot to forbid the imp corpse. Here comes a jackass refuse hauler, picking up the imp corpse just as another imp decides it's time to wander about the burning forest. The imp follows the blissfully unaware hauler all the way back to the entrance as I'm frantically hoping my dwarves hurry up and pull the damn levers to trap it outside and the marksdwarves stop getting provisions and retake their positions in the tower. They do pull the lever, and send the hauler and two wrestlers flying through the air into a pit, just as the imp gives up the chase.
TL;DR : Project wall off the magma vent is underway.

I'll go with whatever the consensus on that is.
If you don't have any particular reason to upgrade, then probably better to leave it as-is. 'Cause as soon as someone does upgrade, everyone playing Ironhold must.
Argh... stupid child... playing with a ballista will kill you.
Good thing everyone, including her parents, are so ecstatic about everything in the world. They won't even notice she's gone. (Or, they will, but they're too happy about other things...)
How long before the law comes by and requires all parents keep their ballistas unloaded and locked up?

One nice aspect of civilizations ruled by a combination of a monarchy and supernatural guidance from some higher being is that no one questions your safety standards.
If it was my turn in the bloodline game, which it probably won't ever be, I would upgrade. The performance increase, grid size, and dump/hide/construction interfaces are worth it for me.
Also it looks like in the next release you can have embark profiles and you can make dwarf corpses and dwarves' items forbid-on-death, which is nice.
Is the increased grid hurting anyone's FPS? I've been chugging lately, but my map is big (7x7 i think) & I have many dorfs. I shrunk my grid a bit but I'm not sure if it helped, I'm around 50 fps now so it's playable but I want 100
Increasing resolution shouldn't lag the game at all.. 99% of the work the game does is simulation that you don't even see. It's updating every tile in the region every second.
All old forts get laggy, never really figured out why. It doesn't seem related to dwarf population. I always thought it was related to how much digging I'd been doing, but I've been told several times that it has no effect. So who knows.

16x16 tiles at 100x60 dimensions would be a 1600x960 window. You'll need to set WindowedX and Y to that.
Thank you, I'll try this.
Do we not need to account for the grey borders?
The gray borders are in fact made out of tiles.
Some awesome dude made a utility for calculating this shit, linked at the bottom of this article: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Custom_grid
This is going to be VERY fun. I already have an irrigation system emptying into the pit.

Hey man there's some division in there too.
That shit is tricky.
