Are there any cellular phones with a web experience comparable to that of the iPhone?

i.e. not a 'mobile browser'. I was researching pretty heavily a while back and was pretty set on an iPhone (10% for aesthetics, 10% for awesome touch screen, 80% for web experience). Two miscellaneous thoughts: 1.) I know there's an in-the-making update to the iPhone with 3G and a few other things... is this on the horizon yet? 2.) Carrier doesn't matter, price doesn't really matter... just looking for pretty much the best all-in-one device I can find.

any PDA phone by HTC, or anything using windows mobile 6 and a touchscreen will give you a similar experience.

You might like something like the AT&T Tilt. I had the previous version of that phone, but ended up trading it out for a blackberry for work. Amazing device.

Look I've tried all sorts of Mobile Phones and to me the iPhone blew them all away, it just feels incredibly intuitive, like I've been browsing with it for years.

If you are the type who will be swayed by 3G then I suggest you wait until atleast after WWDC2008 to make a decision.

There isn't much that can match the iPhone's web browser honestly. However, a decent Windows Mobile phone with Opera Mini comes pretty close. I have an HTC Touch (Sprint, which has more memory than the original), and Opera Mini runs great on it. Opera Mobile is pretty good as well, but I really like Mini's smart zoom feature and some other small things about it.

Pocket Internet Explorer, on the other hand, sucks big time.

Yeah, the IPhone's browser is in a league on its own.

I use a Flame (http://www.mwg.com/xda-flame.aspx) with Opera Mini. Browsing is pretty damned good.

An iPod Touch with another phone taped to it is the second best thing.

The third best thing is about six hundred years behind.

The 3G iPhone is 'imminent' isn't it? Like, this summer supposedly?

Thanks, guys. I didn't know 'alternative browsers' existed for other popular smart phones. My sister has the Wing (AFAIK the 'best' smartphone carried by Tmobile?) and it has a mobile browser. Besides, I just find mobile Windows terribly shallow and pedantic... I like to have a web experience similar to that of a computer, but I still want the UI of a phone or a PDA.

WWDC is next month, right? I suppose I'll just wait and see. I did some Googling this morning and it looks like there will be more substantial updates than just 3G.

Oh shizzle! You wouldn't fancy buying a second hand Edge iPhone? I might be upgrading depending on what turns up at the WWDC.

I also will be selling my iPhone when the 3G version comes out. My plan was to put it on ebay 1 week before the 3G phone launches, let it gather bids for a week, then collect payment the day the new one comes out, then go buy the new one. I hope to have zero downtime. I would probably be willing to sell it to a PAer directly though.

What kind of prices are we talking, gentlemen1?!?!?!

Also, another question: is it expected for the new models to take a price hike, or will they just supplant the old models in the same price point?

It's debatable, but my guess is no price hike. Sales of iPhones at the $599 price point were sluggish compared to cheaper models. $500 seems to be a sticking point, price-wise, for this sort of device. This article has a lot of other "best guesses" about the 3G iPhone. Price and release date (likely late May to mid June) are the big ones, but there's some other interesting stuff in there about the hardware.

I mainly use Opera Mobile on my Tilt, but I recently got into the beta for Skyfire which actually feels more like a full PC browser. It supports basically any web content out there...JS, Flash, Ajax, etc.

If you have a PocketPC, you NEED to go to either HowardForums or xna-developers. Just google them.

Both are communities bent on unlocking and providing the best experience possible on any phone. Not for the faint of heart ...
