I am just going to have my cell with me and hope that I don't miss it. I mean, do they really just ring you once and then say tough shit to you when you don't pick up? Is it like a bad radio dj contest?

Yep, you get one shot. Otherwise they'd spend more time than they already do picking out Omeganauts. On their end, doing it this way is the quickest way to get it done and over with.

Yeah, I guess you have to draw the line somewhere. 1 call, 2 calls, 3 calls. I just didn't realize that and so it came as a bit of a shock. That also means that if I am at home, where my cell service sucks, I am probably screwed.

If you know the calls are going out, and you're just hanging out at home, go spend the rest of the day someplace with better cell service and potentially internet access.

The problem is Moe, I can't answer my cell at work. It sucks to be me, sure. But its kind of unfair to be the only way of communication.

Last year I got my call around the middle of June when I was at lunch. Being east coast time, it was around 12:30 or so. The caller ID came up as 'unknown number', but I answered it anyway.

    Me: Hello?
    Gabe: Hey is this Ben?
    Me: Yeah.
Gabe: Cool. This is Gabe from Penny Arcade. Just calling to see if you want to be in the Omegathon this year.
    Me: ....Oh, yeah. Sure.
Gabe: Great. Is your email still xxxxxx?
    Me: Yup.
Gabe: Alright, you'll get an email later this week with information.
    Me: Ok.
Gabe: Well, congrats. Talk to you later.
    Me: Thanks.
    *click*
Me: Holy shit! Holy shit! Holy shit! I gotta text the crew!!

The rest is history. With this week being the 4th of July, I'd look for phone calls to be sent out next week at the earliest. Just relax and keep your phone handy. If you get picked you get picked, if not, you still enjoy an awesome gaming experience. Remember what the great Lloyd once said:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDLoT5sWOmE

Seriously though, I can't wait to meet the other contestants. Last years bunch of players were a real cool crowd regardless of the round they went out in. I still talk with the other Photoshop Heroes every once in a while. We managed to get a game of Rock Band going a few months back and laid down 700k with all of us on expert. My we've come a long way.

I just had a rather depressing thought:

Despite the fact that we who post on these forums consist of a large percentage of PAX attendees, by no means are we the entire PAX population - with only 18 potential Omegathon spots, how can we be sure the calls haven't already gone out, and were received by persons who do not, in fact, involve themselves in this forum?

Please, remove this doubt from my mind...

Because if the calls had gone out, they would have already posted who was called on the main site. Not to mention that it would be an unprecedented event that no one on the forums got a call, or at least no one got a call, and then joined the forum just to brag about it.

I'm with Moe though, keep your phones handy tomorrow

I'd say it's entirely possible. I doubt the whole forum population here is even a half of the PAX population.
    But since you asked:

There is no way that that is the case. My justifications for this assertion are real and based on actual probability analysis, in which I used numbers that I totally did not make up. I would show it to you but it was just now eaten by a badger.

Well, me and Lewie tried to do the maths - we reckoned on half the people who'll be there pre-registering in time, not all of them opting to go in the Omeganaught selection, then dividing it by 18 and came up with the ridiculous figure of 1:1000 chance each. As he's just won the Guitar Hero III competition and is flying to LA in 3 weeks, who knows, maybe its my turn!

1:1000 odds are still pretty awesome odds though. The lottery isn't even that good.

I have a mute button, and I've become good at muting my work phone, picking up my cellphone, "can you hold for one moment?" and then getting rid of the customer.

None of the times I have done that have been anything but bill collectors though. :-( Couldn't they for one week have their number listed as "Omeganaut Calls" so we know to answer or not? >.<

I doubt 18000+ people pre-registered. Im guessing less than 10000 people will pre-register and not all of those 10000 will opt for the omeganaut. Much greater odds thatn your 1:1000

Approximately 1% of the people who attend PAX post here. However, people who get the call for the Omegathon sign up for the forums shortly after being chosen, if they weren't already here.

I have a question. The 7/3 update on the PAX website says:
We’re going to be choosing our Omeganauts sometime in the next two weeks, so if you’ve preregistered, try not to block any calls!

Umm, doesn't pre-registration stay open until July 31st?

I have been waiting until a bit later to register for PAX due to cash flow timing considerations, and thought I was still going to be okay to be included in the drawing for Omeganauts.

    Am I hosed now?

I was hoping to hear from somebody official-like to say why there's a sudden change. I thought in previous years all you had to do to qualify for the Omegathon drawing was register in the pre-reg period. And now it's "register in the pre-reg period, except for an undefined amount of time at the end of that period that we don't tell you about until it's too late".

In 2004 and 2005 they pulled the names at the end of pre-reg. The problem with that is it gave people very little time to practice the games as they were announced at the same time. Last year, they pulled them in mid-June, but if I'm not mistaken they made it clear that this would be done towards the beginning of pre-reg. I think many of us just assumed it would be pulled around the same time, but people who didn't remember or pay attention last year wouldn't have known this. At this rate they're pulling about three to four weeks later than last year, but still earlier than 2006 (which pre-reg ended in early august). In 2005, I believe pre-reg ended at the beginning of July. If I'm right, then they're probably pulling the names on that time schedule, even though pre-reg doesn't close that early.
