Playing movies on the PSP?

So I bought 4 seasons of Penn and Teller's Bullshit! and I'd like to put them onto my PSP so I can workout to them. I know, great workout movies, right?

Anyway, I've ripped the DVDs to my HDD to .avi file, and then converted those to MPEG-4, which I had read is the video type of choice for the PSP. I've copied those to my memory card, but the PSP still doesn't recognize them. It recognizes my photos and music, but not movies.

What am I doing wrong here?

Are your vids in a X:\MP_ROOT\100MNV01 folder and are renamed as M4VXXXXX (X-s being single digit numbers)?
In my experience getting movies to work on a psp is a pain.

Holy shit muninn! That was it. That's so weird it needs to be in that folder... But that worked. I don't care if you're an elitist asshole, I love you.

How does that work exactly, working out while trying to look at the small PSP screen?

I'm only asking because I might want to do something like that myself, but I don't really know how since usually you have to hold the thing in your hands and stuff.

I'd imagine it's just running on a treadmill or elliptical or something with the PSP on the console. I can't imagine being able to actually watch something on a PSP while I lift.

And yeah, PSP movies are such a pain, though I should really get around to some converting myself.

    Cock push ups.

I imagine it depends on the exercise you're doing. If you were on a treadmill, you could prop it up, or if you're doing push ups you could get the zoom in - zoom out effect.

I heard about the MP4 restriction, yet on the back of the PSP Media Manager, it says the PSP supports 'AVI and MPEG' as well?

I tried to put some Beatmania background vids on the system for kicks, and no luck(they're MPEGs, I think).

    Wait, what?

There's a folder called VIDEOS when you format your memory stick.

Care to guess what goes inside there?

I think this might depend on the firmware you are running on your psp. I am not sure. For example, I have no "Videos" folder.

Have you run the "Format memory stick" option in the menu?

It sets up the file structure for the PSP.

I use Nero to convert my movies, and I just copy to the videos folder.

Takes a half hour or less on a 2 pass movie. But I have a quad core.

If I have a silver slim, should I have a 'Videos' folder or the other lengthier example shown above?

Because mine has neither at the moment.

You need to format your memory stick. It should be an option under settings. This sets up your music, video, photo folders, etc.

Any modern firmware should have the VIDEO folder.

The lengthy folder name mentioned above was dropped about a year and a half ago.

By gods people update your firmware.

Sorry, I was out, but yeah it's an elliptical bike. So it's not moving around much, and I've seen all the episodes so I know them by heart... It'd be nice to see it every once in a while as well as listening to it.

Ah, see, I created the folders on the memory card myself. I didn't think about VIDEO, I named it MOVIE. PHOTO and MUSIC worked like a charm though. :P

That's what I'm using. I'm always nervous about using those things because they almost always fuck up and waste my time... But that one worked for me. :P

Do you guys have a preferred software to rip DVDs? I'd heard that DVD Decrypter works good, but it doesn't work so well with Futurama... Well, last time I tried it at least.

I'd like to setup the DVD to have a "play all" feature, since some of the older discs of Futurama don't have the option. Also, putting them on the PSP would be nice. :)

If you used a Mac I'd recommend Handbrake which works like a dream.

If you're a windows dude, still use Handbrake, but you need to get a decrypter portion as well.

I'm pulling up my chatlogs to see what I recommended to my ex-girlfriend for use with her iPod...

I dunno of the legality of a DVD decrypter on the forums so I'll PM it to you.

My PSP manual tells me to put things in VIDEO, but it never shows up when I do. My PSP manual also tells me to put things in PICTURE, but that's a crock of shit and I know it. It's supposed to be in PHOTO or something.

Anyway, I might run a PSP format given the contents of this thread, but I want to know if it deletes the stuff already on it before I do.

Yeah if you do the format PSP memory card option it will erase everything. Just copy everything to your hard drive, then format it, and then put the files back in the appropriate folder.

I'll second Handbrake for Macs, which is what I used to convert movies for my PSP and TV shows for our household iPods. Works like a dream, although I've been having some trouble with doing a two-pass decryption (or whatever it's called) for movies, since Handbrake seems to hang at the end of the first pass. It's really as idiotproof as you can imagine; it's even got presets for both PSP and iPod video (as well as iPod Touch/iPhone), just click, pick DVD tracks, rename and fire away.

I use my iPod classic for working out, and watching Arrested Development on the treadmill is the way to live. :)
