Thanks for the article Karrmer, and you are welcome Ceva, I'm sure Dave will help you out in no time.
For the PnP tabletop RPG nerds like me or those that can help out theres a petition going for a roleplaying server that got dev's attention on the official forums, a few more sign-ups and it should be fine (requires AoC subscription):
/sign up there if you would like more options to play.
AoC has so many AWESOME emotes wonder why the only roleplaying is fulltime PVP, on well that petition is getting there tho. PVP is a lot of fun but options for the same bucks can't hurt... I don't RP much these days but the wifey liked it better on WoW (more friendly folks around).
This might be a dumb question, but this is the card I am looking at. It for DirectX it says DirectX 10. Would that still work with DirectX 9? I do not have Vista.
This sounds like a stupid question to me.
It works perfectly fine in DX9 and is one of the best cards you can get. It is also amazing in DX10, but remember that DX10 is not actually enabled for Age of Conan yet. That is coming probably early September, so you have plenty of time to get Vista if it interests you for AoC (In August they're doing some big debut of the DX10 mode to show off the graphics/effects/whatever else).
God damn it, ageofconancollectorsedition. Fingers crossed. You better be ready in my mail today, or else I will cry .. uh, cries of anguish and tears of nerdiness.
Yea play.com are wierd with thier emails. I got an email from them at 10:50:13 yesterday saying my copy had been dispatched and to alow 3-4 working days for delivery. I was rather suprised when I went home to find it waiting for me.
A similar thing happened with GTA4, which makes me pretty happy.
I've never had anything but good service from play to be honest, but the email freaked me out a bit. Just relieved they once again delivered the goods ... so to speak!
8800 GT is the way to go. The thing is the most amazing bang for the buck for any computer component I've ever seen. It's ridiculous.
This is the truest thing that has ever been typed.
Has anyone SLI'd those? I am thinking of using my Stimulus money to buy 2 of those and SLI them. Is it worth it or will one be fine?
I have. I posed the question to people what they're playing on a few pages back, but just to reiterate: Yeah, the game runs "ok" for me. Here's my set up:
1680x1050
No AA
Bloom On
Everything high except shadow resolution (low)
Out in the world or in a quest, I can get upwards of 50 frames per second; tortage I get around 30, with some stutters as I run through town here and there. I'm disappointed, though, because it seems like people with just one card are either running max (+AA and Shadows) and kicking ass. When I got home from work yesterday I played with the settings somewhat, trying AA vs. Bloom, Shadows, etc... even with everything on performance didn't stutter too much. I turned off AA because I was in a group with 5 players on White Sands and I was noticing some chop, but damn it still looks good without it. Personally I like the bloom effects in the game more than the jaggies.
Overall, and outside of this thread, the whole SLI experience has left me... jaded. In fact, I have some friends that are looking to get upgraded cards for their PC's so I might just sell my 8800GT's and then drop an extra 150 or so on a 3870X2, or convince the war department (the wife) to let me spend a little extra and go for a GX2.
What I'm wondering is: any advantage to quad cores of dual core?

Indeed I have a lesser computer than you, with an E6550, 8800GT, 2gb RAM and I can run this with everything on high, including full AA, bloom and shadows. I usually play without bloom though, because I think it makes the game uglier

So, I didn't get it in the mail today. Which actually makes me pretty sad, because it was such a perfect time to be playing it .. I mean, I got three days of free time, which does not happen alot, which I could have used on AoC. Ohwell.

When you say "full" AA, what level? 2x? 4x?
And can you give me an idea of frame rate ranges?
edit: Also, what resolution you at?
I'm only at 1280x1024, because all the other resolutions are so distorted on my screen. I'm running with 16x AA at the moment though
MY FPS is around 30-60 depending on what's going on

Since you live in Norway you can go do viking stuff IRL intead of doing barbarian stuff online though, right?
edit.. and on a side note, I moved to a PvE server. After venturing to White Sands and finding every instance with level 16s-20s slumming around I realized that a key component for a game with FFA PvP is a giant landscape. Small zone-based games really don't support FFA PvP if you have any interest in getting anything done without having a group at all times.

Yeah, luckily. Whenever I get angry I just go outside and do an AWESOME BLOODY FATALITY.
Cimmerians are based on celts more than vikings aren't they? So really it's the welsh, irish and scots who have a free AoC MMO running outside their window.

PCI-E 2.0 is backwards compatible with 1.0. So yes, a 2.0 card will work in a 1.0 slot.
This is for sure? Seems counterintuitive.... Like... USB 2.0 stuff working perfectly on a USB 1.0 input.
Also, anybody played the game enough to say "Buy" or "Jesus Christ, do NOT buy!"?
I would say "buy." Funcom has really impressed me with the launch and they seem to have a very large interest in keeping us happy. Plus, the game is just... faster than any other MMO I've played. The combat is quick and brutally satisfying, I don't have to med after a fight (literally I wait 10 seconds and I'm at full health), the quests are actually interesting (although I hear it's a bigger grind once you're out of tortage).
And the game is gorgeous.
As for PC 1.x and 2.0: Any 2.0 card will "work" in a PC 1.x slot, but it's gimped (sorta): Memory bandwidth was doubled in the 2.0 spec. It's still very new, though, and I think the only intel board to fully support is the X38 chipset. If you're rolling with a 8800GT I doubt it would make that much of a difference. But if you were going for say, a new GTX(2) of one of the Radeons with the dualie processor, you might want to look into it.
I think you guys just convinced me to buy an 8800GT. Does the brand matter very much? Any I should strive to get or try my damndest to avoid?
Right now, my x1650 gives me like 10FPS (though, oddly, it seems smoother then that)
I was an ATI freak for a while, and I finally upgraded my X1800XT to an EVGA 8800 GTS and the difference was pretty impressive. Well worth the price of admission.

Also on the gfx cards, you can't beat BFG as a brand, and the 8800GT is a fuckawesome card. Don't even bother with the 9xxx ones.

That's right, UPDATE. Not maintenance.
Booyah, a little before weekend tweakage.
in other news, still waiting on my copy. grr.

I've always had good service (in the event of failure) with PNY.

is on the way. God DAMNIT, this is why I hate computer games. They always make me upgrade my computer cause I am a graphics whore.
Most BFG cards also have a lifetime return policy. As do MSI.
I've had to return a couple BFG cards and never had any trouble, dunno if MSI gives any grief as I've never had one fail.

How is the character appearance customization in this game, on a scale of WoW to CoH?
Massive. Think Oblivion level of customization. You can alter your entire facial shape, body style, scars, tatoots, hair styles, etc.
This is for sure? Seems counterintuitive.... Like... USB 2.0 stuff working perfectly on a USB 1.0 input.
Also, anybody played the game enough to say "Buy" or "Jesus Christ, do NOT buy!"?
Maybe that's it, then. They say that the 8800GT starts to falter at higher resolutions (vs. and 8800GTS/X).
And just curious, why 16AA? I always more than 4 was a waste of resources?
