Curious:
How is the character appearance customization in this game, on a scale of WoW to CoH?
Massive. Think Oblivion level of customization. You can alter your entire facial shape, body style, scars, tatoots, hair styles, etc.
Was that a typo or a fart joke?
Just for comparison's sake:
Q6600
8800GT

When I use 1680x1050, 16x AA, full resolution and view distance on everything except some of the ground cover effects, with bloom off (because it seemed to make everything washed out for some reason), I run around 25-30fps when I'm on my own and just below 20 with a lot of other people around. I'll probably turn down the AA and maybe some of the other effects, try bloom again and see if I can optimize a bit more. Really I'm pretty happy with the way it runs now.
What is depressing about this is that with the exact same setup, I can run CoD4 at 1920x1200 with everything at absolute maximum and get 60+FPS regularly. If I drop below that I change servers.
i think i'm gonna upgrade my gpu instead of cpu...i've got a 7950gt, if the 8800gt is so much better like toms hardware claims, it should suffice....my cpu is either an e6400 or e6450, i forget now that i'm not home....so that's not TOO terribly low
Is there any kind of 3 day trial, or buddy key system in place for this? I'd like to try it out prior to shelling out the money for it.
I read the OP, and skimmed through the many pages but didn't see anything about trials, so???
I'm currently playing WoW, and getting bored, this looks like a great alternative.
No trials yet AFAIK. I'm sure they're going to wait until a few patches down the line when more content is in and the classes are re-balanced for their paying customers before they do a trial.

Whoever posted earlier about Tortage being a way better experience than the areas right after it is definitely right. Suddenly you start getting quests to jump continents and shit, and you're doing a lot more running around than you were in Tortage. I was pretty quickly overwhelmed by trying to keep up with as many quests as were suddenly available to me, so I just quit for the night and started the PA game instead. I might even take the time to level something other than a Barbarian to 20, just to make sure I like my class.
With that said, Barbarians are fucking awesome on PVP servers, and they do pretty fucking good damage. At level 20, one of my combos crits for about 1k. It pretty much rules.
For an alt, I'm thinking of a Priest class or a Herald of Xotli. Heralds have a combo called Fire Lance, and an ability called Hell Step. Evidently Hell Step works a lot like shadowstep, and this intrigues me greatly. On the other hand, Priests of Mitra look like a lot of fun.
I play on 1900x1200 with "high" settings. I haven't tweaked them yet but I get around 40-60 fps's everywhere. 8800 gt and all.
Damn, what? Do you live in the Funcom basement?
Yeah I'd really like to know your system specs to be pulling this off. As well, what draw distances you're using and if you have grass turned on. :P
I'm running with a 8600 GTS and I had to turn down shadows and turn grass off to get a stable-looking framerate. I say 'stable-looking' because when I'm running around and fighting it all looks smooth, but then I check my framerate and it's hovering in the 19-23 range, which is just appalling to think about. I have to imagine that the game could look better if I got that number up, though I'm not exactly sure how (probably in the combat area most likely).
I'm struggling with myself very much not to upgrade to an 8800 GT(s/x) and pick up 2gb more RAM.
Edit: I'm patching now, and there's a list of updates that were added... doesn't look like anything terribly exciting other than if you were one of the people stuck in the Lacheish Plains.
It's like day 3 of me owning this game and I already need more character slots. This 8 per account business just DOES NOT cut it, especially if you plan on playing on a PvE and a PvP server.

Yeah that's the bit i'm least looking forward to. It just doesn't make any bloody sense to do that either.
PvP servers are still worth it. It adds a much-needed tension to questing, and it's not really a big deal when you die. If you're getting ganked, it's really easy to avoid it happening again. I was convinced to play on PvE because of the same thing, but ended up going back to PvP because it's just more fun. It adds a lot to the game, and the PvP elements are far from frustrating.
They really, really need to add more character slots as soon as possible. Even two more would make a lot of difference.

Stormrage, my friend. A whole guild.
And a big one, too. Last I counted, which was yesterday morning, we had 53 members. More joined that day, too. It's a biggie.
I like the PvP mechanic. Really, it's not a frustration as it's so easy to avoid them, and most people don't really go around ganking. I find it fun to be a defender of others and pop out of the shadows as an assassin to back up someone who is coming under attack. It's fun to do that in a group. I'm glad I made the switch to Stormrage.

Ok guys i need some advice. I currently have a level 19 Bear Shaman and a level 18 Tempest of Set. I cant decide which one to use and really would like to concentrate on one for now. Does anyone know which is more powerful later on in the game? I've found that my ToS can take down mobs of multiple guys very easily while my Bear Shaman can burn 1 guy at a time very quickly but gets into trouble quickly if several mobs are involved.
Is it worth it to stick with the Bear Shaman or do they always have problems with multiple mobs? I currently use a shield for my ToS, in end game is that still ideal?

I've heard many stories that the Tempest of Set becomes ridiculously powerful as the levels begin to rise, so if you're looking to absolutely destroy stuff, that's the way to go.
Do this with one caveat, of course: They are bound to get nerfed.

I am simultaneiously leveling a HoX and a Tempest of Set up. I love them both so far, the only thing I am not liking with my HoX is the sheer number of Combos I can do, I can't really reach them all at my kb at once. The 123 being taken by swings is rough. I am mousing witht he right hand, so the left can only comfortable reach to 6 or 7 while being over the move keys. So I find myself just using the same two combos over and over.
I really wish you could map combo starters (or just places on the hot bar) to your mouse for easier starting of some more commonly used combos.
The Tempest of Set is just a frigging machine. It's starting to even out a bit, but getting to Torta I never came close to dying, not even to half health.
Toxic Pickle - Thanks for the advice, i was leaning towards the ToS as just nuking everything is fun.
I've got another question for everyone, how is the armor system setup compared to say WoW.
I know there is cloth, light, medium, heavy, full plate armor wise. Is a shield a small armor boost? big? etc. Would a shield jump you up from say light armor levels to medium? would it push you up to high armor? or is it a very small difference.

You know you can remap the keys on your hotbar. Map 7 through 10 on the hotbar to 'q', 'e', 'r', and 'f', and then map potions to 'z' and 'c'.
I will share my secret keyboard setup with you guys, and it makes melee combat sooo much easier.
USE THE NUMBER PAD.
What do I mean?
I play a HoX, and I was getting frustrated with the default controls like the forumer above me.
I suddenly realized "You dont need the mouse at all for combat! What is my left hand doing!?"
So I put the < ^ > controls on the 1,2, and 3 numpad buttons, and the corrosponding combos on the number above that. The < combo on 4, ^ combo on 5, and > combo on 6.
As I leveled, I got more combos which required more button presses. Those I allocated to 7,8 and 9.
It makes combat a breeze and allows me to focus more on the tactics of fighting rather than where my hands are.
Honestly, there needs to be some good, solid alternate key map scheme for this game. The default, with 1-3 being used for attacks makes everything such a fucking fingertwist. If you're a casting class, it's easy enough to just change it to Q-E-R, but as melee, you have five directional attacks. I suppose you could try Q-E-R-Z-C for melee. I might have to do this at home later and try it out.
You know you can remap the keys on your hotbar. Map 7 through 10 on the hotbar to 'q', 'e', 'r', and 'f', and then map potions to 'z' and 'c'.
Doesn't work as a melee class, who will end up needing 5 directional attacks.
EDIT: That num-pad suggestion seems pretty good, but in big PVP situations switching between two hands on the keyboard and one on the mouse would get pretty hectic, I bet.

I may not be humble, but I think this works to well to be bop'd. And if you are wondering about the two other melee attacks, 0 and . would like to have a word with you.
Shurakai, have you used that setup in PVP at all? I find I need a hand on the mouse in PVP just to track enemy movement. It might work great on monsters, but I am kind of dubious that it would be just as good in PVP.
I don't PVP, so I'm not sure how well it works in that situation. However, I do know that with the default setup, when you are attacking and focusing on attacking you cannot move around because instead of your left hand being on qweasd they are on the regular 123 etc. Moving around is pretty vital in PVP is it not?
This setup probably wouldn't work if I didn't also change q and e to strafe and tab to switch targets.
Edit: got my hands mixed up.

whelp, just got the new computer and am starting the installation.
With the default setup, it's pretty easy to move around in PVP and still attack, actually. You just can't keep all three fingers on 1-2-3. I think Q-E-R-Z-C is going to be the setup I try for melee classes.
I'm guessing part of the reason most classes only have 5 or so combos is because of the control setup.
I have an Athlon X2 5200+, 4 gig of RAM, Geforce 8800 GTS.
So... how high will I be able to ramp up the settings, and is this game worth quitting WoW? (Being that I'm hopelessly addicted to WoW, and have tried many MANY MMOs that don't meet what I consider to be the standards)

As long as you aren't playing it on a 24" monitor you should see 30fps+ average on high settings.
Edit: And for the record I am still playing WoW. The starting area is fan-fucking-tastic, but it takes a sharp drop down to just 'okay and worth exploring a bit more' after you leave.
