I will be student-teaching (unpaid) this August at a high school and will only be able to work weekends at an outside job. I currently have a job at a pesky paying video rental store. I'll have a roommate in August, so rent won't be too difficult, but I would still like a higher paying job that would allow me to work only weekends.
I was considering waiting in a restaurant, because I've heard they pay well on weekends. What types of restaurants would be best? Other than that possible job, are there other well-paying weekend jobs (possibly one or two days during the week as well, during the afternoon/evening)?
I'd suggest checking restaurants like you've mentioned. It can be tough, but I've heard they can pay well provided you're not a total fuckup as a waiter. (Note, I've never worked in a restaurant because I would be a total fuckup as a waiter, I don't have the patience for dealing with people...)
Depending on where you live, you might check into working at a gas station. They tend to pay better then most retail because you have to be 18+ to sell alcohol so they can't get away with minimum wage slaves from the local high school. Like I said though, depending on where you are there might be a safety concern involved.
Pizza Delivery, Valet Parking. I've done both and they're pretty good (always $20+ an hour including tips). It's tough to get weekend shifts in these kind of jobs though when you're starting out since the weekend usually means the best tip times and those shifts will be taken up by older employees.

I definitely considered that fact: weekend shifts are generally where the good hourly wages/tips are made, and in pretty much any type of job, too. I never thought of Valet Parking, though...that just involve me driving a car from point A to B in the parking lot, right? This would be similar hourly wages to a waiter, plus better or the same tips?
It sounds like everyone has pointed towards a job that involves tips (aside from the conveneint mart, which I'd rather not consider, given a friend's horror stories).
So far, thanks for the tips, everyone! Looking forward to getting more suggestions.
Bear in mind that if you get a job in a decent restaurant you may well get some free meals out of it as well. Could help if you're down on money, or at least as a wee perk when your spirits are low after working 7 days a week!
Not to scare you or anything but I would base this on where you live. In Philadelphia there have been some killings of delivery guys/girls so many times they have you come pick up the food yourself. Other than that, it is a pretty good job!

High-traffic restaurants are a great way to make easy weekend money, but lucrative weekend shifts are usually given to seniority. New waiters are often given opening and lunch shifts, which still can make decent money, but dinner shifts (where the money is) are usually for the more experienced.
I would second pizza delivery. Or sub delivery, if you have those around you. Jimmy John's, Silvermine, places like those.
if you are able to handle 3rd shift hours, there are plenty of ridiculously easy jobs on the weekend. Hotel night auditor, hospitals, etc. It's not easy switching your sleep schedule around, but on a 10 hour shift on night audit, I had to work maybe 4 of them. The pay is good, and the work is amazingly easy. 3rd shift isn't for everyone though.

Movie theaters. The work is shit, but it's weekends, it's money, and usually it's free movies, popcorn, and drinks.

It depends on where you do valet and for whom. But it mostly involves greeting guests, helping them out their car, parking their car wherever you're supposed to, then retrieving it when they leave. Sometimes you get to drive Ferrari's and Porsche's and stuff which can be fun if you're into that sort of thing. You need to be a pretty good driver and know how to drive a stick. Pay depends entirely on where you work. I usually make around $25 an hour working random events in San Francisco but in some places, like Vegas especially, valets can earn six-figure incomes.
