A few years ago when GameCrazy had that outrageous clearance sale on their "older" used games, I cleaned my local place out. Bought a bunch of 64 games that I had missed in the 90s and then realized I didn't have an expansion pack to fucking play any of them.
Got DK64 and Majora's Mask at home, waiting for me to get off my ass and buy one. :P
Harvest moon
Mario 64
Winback Quest 64, in a weird sort of way
Perfect Dark
No, Quest was a piece of tripe. If you're looking for an RPG go with Ogre Battle 64 which can't be mentioned enough times (if only cause it's one of what five or less good ones to be released on the n64?).
Im gonna go ahead and say Perfect Dark hasn't aged well, or at least not well enough to where it trumps playing Goldeneye. Even back in the day it didn't grab me as well as rare's legendary Bond outing.
Also Donkey Kong 64 in retrospect was a huge collect-a-thon that happened to have some banjo-kazooie platforming at times. You're better off just getting the original Banjo game and ignoring dk64 and banjo tooie (unless you REALLY REALLY want to buy three of the same game).
Shadows of the Empire and Rouge Squadron are solid star wars efforts, and yes Blast Corps is a must.
Also as someone mentioned some of the titles are available on the viritual console so take that as you will.
Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate the suggestions, but I like how people keep recommending games that I'm already getting with the console, want to get anyway, or don't want because I have them on another console. Nobody suggest OoT or Majora's Mask, cos I already have them on Gamecube. I should probably also mention it's a PAL console, which rules out stuff like Harvest Moon 64, cos I don't believe that got released here.
But anyway, my list will now include Waverace and Blast Corps, possibly Excitebike 64 too. I've played Mario Kart 64 a few times at a friend's house, and I don't like it as much as, say, Mario Kart DS.
This is pretty of topic but does anybody know how to use the crowbar that you get at that one rainy dark level, I checked the manual and looked for how do to it on the internets and just gave up.
I had good times with Turok as well. To the point where I was disappointed the 360 reviews for it were poor. It was one of those games that was so huge that I never completed it, but I'd go back every now and then and get a little further.
I kind of want to play it now. Dammit guys, I don't have time.
Castlevania 64 was cool too. There was another one that came out, but it was the same game basically with an extra playable character? It was an effective fright game for me, wandering through a hedge maze while being chased by a guy with a chainsaw.
Conker's Bad Fur Day was fun too, but that's perhaps I was in high school and I thought that type of humor was hilarious. It definitely pushed the limits of (story? in a non-kiddie sense) but I don't know how much I'd enjoy it these days. Having said that, my friends still play the Beach mini-game amongst themselves.
Hybrid Heaven can't be pimped enough. This and Winback: Covert Operations were so different for the console that even today I check every bargain bin for them.

Why don't you guys stop fucking around and just say "Any game made by Nintendo"?
Because seriously, that's what you're all really saying.
actually, not really
Because saying "any game made by Nintendo" would include the Mario Parties.
And unless you have some friends over the game is not fun at all.
That's like saying "Connect Four isn't fun unless you have friends over". If you play Mario Party alone, you need to go rent some friends or something.

Star Wars Rogue Squadron is better than it's gamecube sequel (which was still awesome.)
You're getting Jet Force Gemini.... you'd better play it. The game was fucking awesome, probably one of my 4 or 5 favorite N64 games. Think Ratchet and Clank before Ratchet and Clank.
Blast Corps, is still as fun as ever.
I'd skip Turok, I cannot imagine it stands up against any current FPS.
Banjo Kazooie is the best 3d open world platformer of all time. If you play Banjo Kazooie, you will be disapointed by Banjo Tooie, so play BT first if you really want to get both.
BattleTanx Global Assault was ahead of it's time as far as 4 player action goes. I'd think it's probably still worth playing today.
Snowboard Kids 2, despite a presentation that would make you think otherwise, is an absolute blast.
If you do get No Mercy (which is most fun with friends), please use a memory card to back up all your custom wrestlers. The game shipped with a bullshit bug that resets the data on the cartridge after x (I think something like 40?) hours of play or something.

Really? I could never get into that game. Although that may be because my previous Star Wars experience was with Tie Fighter and it's difficult to compete with that kind of perfection.

This was one of my gaming guilty pleasures, but Legacy of Darkness is more worth your time. You get to fight a totally alternate Dracula for beating Cornell's quest, there are alternate costumes, more characters to play as, but the original is still great for...the Villa. Oh yes.

I had that, unfortunately.
I played through those 40 hours of gameplay at least 3 times.
The game is THAT good.

Pokemon Snap is kind of hit or miss, I think. To enjoy it, you probably need to be a huge Pokemon dork, kind of like me. I really fucking loved it when I was a kid. I mean, I think I counted down the days before it released and then killed myself while waiting for a couple days until I could get to an N64 to play it.
That said, I'm not sure if I would like it today. It's really a pretty simple rail shooter than has Pokemon running around in what are pretty much pre-determined paths that are set up to let you get a shot. Meanwhile, other Pokemon will need to be triggered by doing something (throwing pester balls at them or something). My 11 year old mind had the hardest time figuring out how to get some Pokemon to appear, but nowadays, a quick trip to Gamefaqs will probably reveal all.
Also, Professor Oak is a dick who doesn't know how to appreciate a good picture.
If you're getting it on the cheap, then give it a go. Actually, talking about it has me kind of wanting to play it suddenly. Too bad my 64 is holed up downstairs.

This thread has a serious lack of Episode 1: Podracer. I mean, come on.
it's better on the dreamcast
but yeah
WHy the fuck couldn't they nail down 60fps in the DC version.
It boggles my mind.
Boggles, I tell you.
I played this on the PC back in the day with my Voodoo 3 3000 AGP. That card was bitchin'.
The game is fucking awesome. Probably the best thing about Episode 1 in its entirety.
edit:
also I just found this on Wikipedia, answers the DC version question and explains the N64's goodness:
While the PC, Mac and Dreamcast versions of Episode 1 Racer were largely the same, the Nintendo 64 release had to be scaled back somewhat due to the system's hardware and cartridge format limitations. As a result none of the full motion video cinemas from the PC/Mac/Dreamcast ports are included, the polygon counts are much lower, there are fewer textures which are also lower in resolution, and the soundtrack is scaled down considerably. Throughout the career mode only the Episode 1 title track plays during the final lap of each race. The Nintendo 64 version supported the optional Expansion Pak, which enabled switching between Low Resolution (standard) and High Resolution (enhanced) modes via the options menu. Unfortunately the frame rate and control response suffered perceptibly in high resolution mode, which, alongside a distracting vertical-line effect in the high resolution textures, meant that the game actually played better in blurry low resolution standard mode.
The PAL Dreamcast version did not support the console's 60Hz mode.

Personally I'd recommend Hybrid Heaven, Wave Race 64, Mischief Makers, Star Fox 64, and Perfect Dark.
Elvis ftw.
Hybrid Heaven.
Perfect Dark.
Hybrid Heaven.
Majora's Mask.
Hybrid Heaven.
Jet Force Gemini.
That's about all you need.

Let's make out.

Excitebike was really freaking good, but got released too late in the console's life for most people to give a crap

Maybe that was more for the theme song than anything.
BUMB TO THE BOOM TO THE BUMB TO THE BASS
Because seriously, that's what you're all really saying.
Wii U NNID: MegaSpooky
Perfect Dark/Goldeneye
Battle Tanx 1 or 2
Jet Force Gemini
Mario Kart 64
The World Is Not Enough
Blast Corps (Those levels with the backlash or whatever can eat a dick though)
Space Station Silicon Valley
Rocket: Robot on wheels
Probably any of the Rush games (Rush 2, Rush 2049)
Starfox 64
Vigilante 8
And uhh... I think that's it for now.
But anyway, my list will now include Waverace and Blast Corps, possibly Excitebike 64 too. I've played Mario Kart 64 a few times at a friend's house, and I don't like it as much as, say, Mario Kart DS.

Perfect Dark
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
Turok
Doom 64
Waverace
NWO v. WCW (really, just about any wresting game on N64 is good)
Other than that, you've got Mario 64, Goldeneye and Star Fox covered. :^:

Jet Force Gemini is also fairly impressive.

I saved up $200 in allowance money to get it and only ever bought three games for it.

Why hasn't someone said Yoshi's Story.
Maybe not the best, but certainly fun.
Also, Diddy Kong Racing
Zelda OoT
Perfect Dark or Goldeneye
Star Fox
Look on all the good games you missed out, ye mighty, and dispair!

I mean sure, any AKI wrestling game is good in multiplayer. But No Mercy (and to an extent WM2000) are absolutely a blast in singleplayer.
I actually felt obligated to go through it all again awhile back, seeing how Chris Benoit had every single championship belt.
